If you’re using — or plan on using — TSA PreCheck in 2026, you NEED to know these rules!

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) offers TSA PreCheck — a special program that allows you to move through United States-based airport security much faster than regular security lines. A major boon to those who use it, TSA PreCheck comes with its own set of rules that you should know about if you want to make the most out of your membership.
TSA PreCheck gives eligible participants (such as U.S. citizens and permanent residents) five years of benefits for $85 or less, and includes perks such as the ability to leave in your bag electronics and 3-1-1 liquids, as well as leave on belts, light jackets, and shoes when going through security. About 99% of passengers wait less than 10 minutes in TSA PreCheck lines, children 17 and under can join an adult in the TSA PreCheck lane for free, and PreCheck touchless IDs are now offered. To apply, you can start an application online at the TSA website or find an in-person location. However, before you do so, be aware of these 3 rules.
Allocate Time Wisely
TSA PreCheck saves time, but it doesn’t mean “show up last-minute.” For domestic flights, you should still arrive 60 to 75 minutes before your departure. If you’re checking a bag, lean closer to 75 minutes. If it’s an early-morning or peak travel day like holidays, 90 minutes is a safer bet.

International flight passengers with TSA PreCheck should still arrive 2 hours before departure.

Even with PreCheck, boarding often starts 30 to 45 minutes before departure, and bag drop cutoffs can be 45 to 60 minutes before takeoff. Additionally, TSA PreCheck lanes can still back up at busy hubs like Orlando and Los Angeles International Airports, and random screenings or closed PreCheck lanes do happen from time to time.
You Still Need an Acceptable ID at the Airport
Having TSA PreCheck doesn’t replace the need for required identification. Even with PreCheck, travelers must present a REAL ID-compliant license, passport, or other acceptable ID at the checkpoint to fly.

Beginning February 1st, 2026, TSA is charging a non-refundable fee of about $45 if you arrive without acceptable ID and need to verify your identity at the airport before flying. Save yourself the hassle and make sure you have your REAL ID/passport/acceptable ID before you go to the airport.

Keep in mind that without this ID, you can’t use your TSA PreCheck benefits, and could pay a fee and face delays.
Benefits Aren’t Guaranteed
As I previously mentioned, TSA PreCheck generally lets you keep shoes, belts, jackets, laptops, and liquids in your carry-ons during screening. However, PreCheck lane access isn’t guaranteed on every flight, so it never hurts to have contingency plans (which is why allocating extra time helps).

It depends on your airline, airport, and the unpredictable TSA security measures that may be implemented at any time.

Additionally, you don’t need to use every perk. Some airports now offer TSA PreCheck Touchless ID using facial recognition. You’ll still need a backup ID, even if your mobile boarding pass shows the indicator. And you don’t even need to opt in to this Touchless ID if you don’t want to!
