This New TSA PreCheck Perk Makes Airport Security Even FASTER

Going through TSA at airports isn’t really something we would describe as “fun.” You can often wait a long time, have to empty your bag, take off your shoes even though most people can keep them on, and get scolded for forgetting your water bottle was full (been there, done that), and that’s all before getting on a flight, which can also be stressful with delays, cancellations, and more.

TSA PreCheck is a way to help skip the lines and keep your items in your bags (for the most part), but did you know about TSA PreCheck Touchless ID?

Most of the time, when you go up to security with TSA PreCheck, they use the ID or passport you handed to them at the checkpoint to verify it’s you before you head on your way. This is a manual process involving the TSA agent checking along with the ID.

The TSA PreCheck Touchless ID system uses facial recognition to scan your face, making security screening more efficient.

Facial recognition creates a biometric template of the passenger’s live facial image taken at the checkpoint and compares it to the gallery of photos already in the system, such as your U.S. Passport or Visa photos. When you signed up for TSA PreCheck, you might have already submitted photos of yourself. Even if you’ve already submitted photos and have used the facial identification, you can choose to opt out of this whenever you’d like.

When you check in for your flight in your airline’s app, eligible passengers may see a pop-up asking whether they’d like to opt in. The system could help TSA run more efficiently and more safely with these new technologies. When we were at LaGuardia Airport, we saw that the TSA PreCheck Touchless ID line was almost completely empty because no one knew it existed! Sounds like less waiting in line to us.
