These days, the closest thing we have to a royal proclamation is a “breaking news” tweet on social media. Oh? Disney just announced that one of its park icons is going under refurbishment soon? Well, there are a couple of ways we can learn more about that type of news.

While you may not have a town crier to spread the news, you have us here at AllEars! It’s our job to keep you updated on all the latest Disney news, and we just spotted TWO new “Notice of Commencement” permits online that we need to talk about.
OK, what is a Notice of Commencement? Think of it like one of those royal proclamations we were talking about earlier. It’s basically Disney’s way of saying, “Hear ye! Hear ye! We are going to work on a new project now.” As the name implies, it’s an official notice that construction is set to, well, commence. Got it?

We just spotted a new Notice of Commencement, filed by Walt Disney Imagineering, for work at the Muppet*Vision 3D building in Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

The document doesn’t reveal much, but it does list PCL Construction Services as the contractor for “General Construction.” We’ve seen the name “PCL Construction Services” listed on old Disney projects as well — they have worked on all sorts of things with Disney Imagineering.

The Notice of Commencement has a one-year expiration date, which is typical for these types of permits. This could indicate that construction will begin soon at the Muppet*Vision 3D building.

We know that eventually, the Muppets Courtyard will be transformed to a new Monsters, INC.-themed land. Looking at the concept art, the Muppet*Vision 3D building exterior looks quite similar to the new design. Does this mean that the new permit will focus on interior construction? Building updates? We’ll have to wait and see.

But wait! There’s more! Disney ALSO filed a Notice of Commencement for “General Construction” in EPCOT. Spaceship Earth is set to close on August 25th for a temporary refurbishment, so this permit sets up the necessary approvals for that project to move forward.

Engineering Design Services, LLC is the contractor listed on the permit, and the company is known for its engineering work on “themed entertainment projects.” Now, as a reminder, we don’t know exactly what type of work is being done behind the scenes (“General Construction” is pretty vague, after all), but this permit could cover anything from mechanical work to electrical engineering.

Disney has not revealed an opening date for Spaceship Earth yet, but we’ll be sure to keep you updated.
