Tips for Disney Parks & Cruise Lines

I always pack a collapsible hamper on our trips to Disney World and, more recently, on a Disney cruise! At the end of our stay, I dump all the dirty clothes into one piece of luggage, which goes straight to the laundry room when we return home! The hamper really helps keep those rather smallish Disney rooms as tidy as possible! - Angela

Last year we traveled to Walt Disney World and stayed at Bay Lake Tower with a Magic Kingdom view. Our son, who is a veteran and has PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), was especially sensitive to the loud noises and explosions throughout the parks. I never realized how noisy some of the attractions were. We could hear the explosions of the fireworks from our resort hotel. The Indiana Jones Stunt show is another attraction with loud and sudden explosions. These noises that some of us may take for granted can be unsettling for those who have recently experienced combat. - Kim Bieler

We enjoy the free activities at Disney Springs, a great place to wind down after a busy day in the park. Activities in front of Earl of Sandwich, a great place to eat and cheap compared to other Disney area restaurants, were family oriented. Also the band and stage area, outside, in Pleasure Island has entertainment at night. Adults and kids alike can all have fun and relax. - Jayne

If a member of your party likes to wear certain types of pants with fairly loose pockets (i.e., athletic or cargo pants), and carries a wallet, it would be a very good idea before your trip to purchase those small Velcro closures and sew them inside the top edge of the pocket. These are just small round bits of Velcro with adhesive on the back so you can place them where you want them. Then just a couple of stitches to secure the front of the pocket to the back, and you are good to go. The Velcro will come apart easily with just a finger tug. We learned the hard way that wallets tend to pop right out of some pants, especially the very loose and comfortable exercise pants my husband favors for park-wear. Luckily, the wonderful people at Cosmic Ray's were able to find his wallet and return it, but we know next time to add a little security! - Joyce A. Deen

When packing checked bags, we always divide each person's clothes and put some of each in each suitcase. That way, if one of our suitcases gets lost, we all have something to wear rather than one person having nothing and everyone else having a lot of clothes. I pack my swimsuit in my carry-on as I have to special order mine online so it would be difficult to replace. My husband wears his heaviest shoes on the plane to save on baggage weight. - Mary Badami

Our family does not eat pork, and at the Garden Grill, we mentioned to the server not to bring any pork products (several menu items mentioned bacon). A few minutes after we sat down, the chef came to our table to point out that a few other items also had pork in them, such as a topping or gravy. He offered some alternatives that were delicious and didn't take any extra time. We were also able to get seconds, since it is a family style meal. It's worth it to always ask! - Amy O.

If you're an avid pin hunter and trader, like me, realize the value of pin hunting first thing when you get in the park. During one Disney trip, my family had gotten to the Magic Kingdom bright and early. I had seen on sale earlier in the trip a pin set of four based on the attractions. I liked one pin and knew that two others would be great for my brother-in-law so I was hoping that I could maybe find at least one pin from the set. When we entered the park, I stopped at the stroller and locker rental shop long enough to check cast member pins. It would seem that a set of the pins that I had been eyeing had just been opened because each cast member had one pin from the set! I was able to get ALL the pins that I wanted! So, when pin trading, consider the idea that new pin sets may be broken early in the morning to provide sufficient pins for the cast members. Your early morning hunt may be the perfect time to find that elusive pin you've been wanting! - Melody

We started planning trips around events so that even if we could only go for a weekend, it was still possible. Just last October, we took in Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party. That was our only visit to a park during our three-day stay, but not our only Disney adventure. We visited the Winter Summerland miniature golf for the first time -- what a blast! We also visited a few resorts, eating in some of our favorite locations like the Kona Cafe at the Polynesian. Although we enjoy spending four, five, or more days in the park, these shorter trips have meant just as much, and we have plenty of memories! - Shawna

Boardwalk Villas - I have a money-saving tip for all of the BoardWalk hotel guests staying without cars. As DVC members we almost always stay at our home resort, the Boardwalk. We also use Magical Express and never bother to rent a car while there. (Gotta love that free Disney transportation!) Luckily there is a Hess station across the street from our resort entrance. On our first day there my husband and I will unpack one of our large suitcases and wheel it on over to that Hess station where we fill up on gallons of water, bottles of soda, orange juice and beer, plus some snacks and simple breakfast foods to stock our hotel fridge. We may look a little strange loading all that up into a suitcase and walking back to our hotel but we are able to stock up on drinks for a whole week at less than half the cost of the resort. - Erin

On a recent trip I discovered that the new touch and go, RFID cards will still work while in a lanyard pouch. However, after I traded my paper annual pass for a new touch and go pass, it would not work in the pouch anymore. Apparently if you have more than one of the new types of cards together in a pouch or hold them together the sensors pick up both chips and can not tell which is which. The cards do work if you hold them up to the sensors one at a time still. They just can not be stacked together.

It's great to be on vacation knowing you worked ahead of time to pay the trip off in advance and won't have a large bill waiting upon your return. However, I earn a bit more by saving the cash/expense money I expect for tips and other spending and add it to my credit card right before I leave. This way I charge the tips and other items and earn the "points" on my card for a future use! And there are no worries about losing the cash. Same planning, just getting a little "extra" for another trip! - Lisa

This last trip we bought a pretty decent umbrella stroller that had a shade, basket underneath, and little console on the handles for less than $20. We used that and the boys just switched every now and then when they were tired. It folded up nicely and we didn't have to worry about the massiveness of hauling our beast around. We ended up bringing it home with us, but our original plan was to just give it away. Pay it forward, if you will. - Faith Turner

We had a temporary tag on our last trip and only found this out by accident one night when the Polynesian parking lot was full, but the guard saw the tag and directed us to the complimentary valet parking. We did take advantage of it after that, and it was nice to have the young valet men lift out the scooter for us! - Kathy Jo
