Tips about Characters and Resorts
We were looking for something new and creative for acquiring autographs. My daughter is 9 and son is 10 and really into baseball. I went out and bought a pink baseball and a blue baseball. They took the balls to the character dinners and had them signed. When we got home I bought a protective baseball case and placed the balls in there. It was a great way to add their personality to the autographs. - Eric Berdan

This tip is a culmination of several great tips I have read on this site that worked out so perfectly for us last week at Disney. Before we left I bought each of my three kids a fanny pack. In it they carried a small plastic photo album filled with 4x6 index cards and a large Sharpie marker for autographs. The photo album ($1 each at Walmart) was a great alternative, as it allows you to put the photo in alongside of the autograph; a small zipper-top sandwich baggie filled with the appropriate ratio of coins to do pressed pennies (they cost 51 cents each); their Passports from Epcot; and a Visa gift card with dollars loaded on it for their own souvenirs -- that way if it got lost all we had to do would be to call and stop the card. They wore the packs every single day and barely complained once. This was a HUGE load off of my shoulders as usually I would be carrying all of these things around. I didn't even have to worry about them setting them down and losing them since they were snugly attached to their bodies at all times. It was an awesome solution to many different challenges -- thanks for sharing all the great ideas! - Marsha of Canton, Ohio

Since you're talking about the Character Experience, a true rare one to find is Jiminy Cricket. He only comes out once a year to meet and greet -- Earth Day, of course, at Rafiki's Planet Watch in Animal Kingdom. And to get my picture with him, I took a day off from work, drove a couple hours and made a day of it at the World --on my birthday, naturally. - Sergio Piedra
EDITOR'S NOTE: On Earth Day (April 22) Jiminy can also be spotted in the front of Animal Kingdom -- and sometimes over in the Magic Kingdom, too!

Coronado Springs - We want to let "winter" vacationers know that the outdoor pools are heated. We stayed at the Coronado Springs Resort in October, and thought it was too cool to swim at night. One night I happened to see how cold the water was and to my surprise it was warmer than it was during the day. No one mentioned that the outdoor pools are heated! So fellow vacationers, enjoy the uncrowded pools under the stars, in the warm, warm heated pools. - Krista Hook

Over the years, our tween daughter has filled a few Disney autograph books and is (in her words), "too old for that now!" But her younger brother still likes to get character autographs. So, for her birthday celebration trip I found an 11x14 (easy enough to carry in a backpack), white "signature" photo mat. (You can find these in any discount store, usually in the wedding or scrapbooking sections.) She had characters and family sign it. Inserting one of her favorite photos from the trip, we now have a nice memento and a personalized art piece for her room. - Maura

Old Key West - We just enjoyed a wonderful week at Disney's Old Key West. However, we wondered why we spent so much time (greater than 45 minutes on a couple occasions!) waiting for buses to take us to the parks. After inquiring (finally) with the concierge, we were told that if the bus filled prior to our stop at Hospitality House, the bus driver would automatically skip this stop and a bus would only stop when vacant. Our tip -- walk the extra three minutes to the Peninsular Rd. bus stop and enjoy an empty bus each time! - Jen Tesoriero
EDITOR'S NOTE: We are afraid that the concierge gave you some erroneous information. Buses at OKW make all of the stops since many times people will use a park bus (any park bus) as an internal shuttle to the Hospitality House as they all stop there last before heading out to a park. This is especially true in the mornings and around dinner time.

POLYNESIAN RESORT - I just returned from a magical nine days in the World. It could have just as easily been a disaster. As soon as I checked into my room at the Polynesian, I went to charge my cell phone. Unfortunately I realized that I had forgotten to bring my charger. I thought I'd be incommunicado for the entire trip. Since my husband and I often take our kids in seperate directions, I was really worried about how we would manage our days. Thinking it was a slim chance, I inquired at the concierge desk. What a pleasant surprise when they brought out a bin of about 20-25 cell phone chargers for me to look through and find the right one. I was able to borrow it a few times during my trip so that I always had my phone ready and charged. - Vicky
EDITOR'S NOTE: This is a great idea, but don't depend on it, as not all resorts can accommodate you like this. Go ahead, ask Senior Editor Debra Martin Koma how she knows...

Instead of the typical autograph books, we purchased softballs and had the characters sign them. Both my children are avid sports fans so when we got home, we purchased the clear boxes to store them in. We added the year after we got all our autographs. This year when we go, we are taking a bag of baseballs. - Natalie
EDITOR'S NOTE: Clever autograph idea! But remember, many of the costumed characters may find it difficult to hold and sign a baseball.

To make my children's autograph books a little more special we always save a page for each member of the family on the trip. Towards the end of the vacation we share a special memory of each child from that trip. This works especially well when traveling with extended family. I know I still enjoy reading what my grandmother, mother and aunts wrote about our special trip when I was 10, and that was 25 years ago. - Amanda Spears

Since dresser drawers are few in the rooms, bring along one of those hanging closet organizers for each child with at least seven slots. You can place your child's shorts, t-shirts, socks, underwear, etc. in the cubes thus saving on drawer space. - Barbara D.
I just returned from a terrific stay at the Grand Floridian and wanted to share a unique experience if you're looking for something extra-special. My husband surprised me with an Intimate Dining Experience. It's a two-hour dining experience for up to four people, even if staying off-property, with a choice of locations throughout the resort, personalized menus and a butler. Ours was on a balcony of the Grand Floridian with a view of the lagoon and fireworks. It was arranged directly through the front desk at the Grand Floridian. - Denise D.

I wanted to capture my daughters' first trip to WDW by collecting character autographs. However, with my girls being 3 years old and 16 months, a collection of autographs in a book wouldn't be much fun for them, so I decided I would make them a blanket of autographs. I pre-washed a heavyweight white cotton fabric and cut it into 7"x10" panels. I found iron-on appliques of Disney characters. I also cut out extra blank panels. I cut foam core to the same size as the panels and secured the panels with binder clips. I found fabric markers that worked well, but the X-tra large chisel tip Sharpies (in various colors) worked great. The characters, especially the princesses, loved being able to sign next to their applique. With the blank panels, I asked characters to sign as big as they wished. I used iron-on transfers to transfer the photos of those characters onto fabric. I then sewed the panels together with a backing fabric and both girls ended up with a custom blanket to commemorate their trip. - Kelly Ostroski

We visited Walt Disney World this past July with five children ranging from 2 to 14 years old. We found the best place to line up for character photos was at Epcot's Character Connection. It is air-conditioned and the staff were very friendly and interacted with the children and adults. The characters went out of their way to please and play with my 2-year-old. An experience as an adult I will never forget: Pluto kneeling on the floor, nose-to-nose with my 2-year-old, and Minnie and his first kiss. - Valerie Fisher

This past year we went to Disney two times in three months. My daughter is 3 and loved the characters and getting autographs and pictures with them! The first time we went I purchased an autograph book that had a space for the picture, for I believe $12.99 The second time we went she said she wanted to get ALL the autographs AGAIN! So I picked up 4x6 index cards on a spiral ring. The characters signed the unlined side and when we got home I put them in a small 4x6 photo album. All it cost was $3. We put a postcard with the year in the front and now we have a wonderful photo album and autograph book! - Tiffany
