Tips about Characters and Mousecellaneous

When I was planning our family trip to Disney World, I came across the tip of getting a poster to have the characters sign. I loved the idea, but it was almost impossible to find a poster with just the castle or characters on it, even in Disney World. Luckily, on our second day in Epcot, we went on the Imagination with Figment ride. After you leave the ride and enter the gift shop area you can have them take a family picture and put it on a poster that you choose. It costs about $25 or so, the same as any other poster. They laminate it, but I found that Sharpie markers work fine. (The fine tip ones dry immediately; the thicker ones take a few seconds more.) The characters loved the poster idea and we have something we can hang up and see all the time. - Adriane Landry

Ever wonder how much walking you do at the different parks, or on different days? So did we. A couple of years ago I bought an inexpensive pedometer basically for this purpose. You may want to consider this, as it gives you a little more to talk about after your vacation. We keep a daily log of the miles we walk and share it with our friends back home. Also you will either confirm what you already think about how far you walk, or you may be quite surprised that you walked as far as you did. Epcot - Just returned from our annual Thanksgiving trip to WDW. At Epcot there is now the Character Connection (by Innoventions and Club Cool). This is replacing the Double Decker bus that used to travel through Epcot with multiple characters. At the Character Connection we found Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, Donald and Chip & Dale. This is all inside and kids can get to see all of them and get autographs, too. While I loved the bus, the Cast Member said that they had a lot of complaints that the bus took off too quickly and kids did not get enough time to see their favorite characters, and also it is very hot outside in summer and the bus would not come out in the rain. This area was not very busy; my kids waited about two minutes to frolic with the characters. My tip would be go get a FastPass for Soarin' and go to the Character Connection! - Amy G.

I noticed in some of the online forums that many people will use their vacation as a reason or inspiration to get in shape. After all, you will need your "walkin' shoes" in the World! I, too, have begun walking in the mornings for exercise... inspired by our pending trip to that Magical Place! My tip is: there are many new sources for podcasts about Disney World. Listening to these podcasts really makes your walk go quickly! You don't need an iPod to listen; any MP3 player will do, or even burn them to disc for your old-fashioned CD Walkman! - Tom in Connecticut

While preparing for our trip and reading all the tips I could find, I came across the tip about getting the dish wipes for washing out the refillable cups or anything else you might need to wash. I thought that it was an excellent tip and set out to try to find them. I looked in every store in my area trying to find them, but could not. Finally I decided to try to make my own. I got some thick baby wipes and laid them flat on the kitchen counter. I squeezed on some dish soap and left them to dry until the next day. When they were dry, I put them in a zipper top bag. It worked perfectly and I was able to use things I already had around the house! - Angela B.

Our kids collected pages of character autographs throughout the trip. On one of the last days of our trip we left the autograph books in a mesh bag on the back of our umbrella stroller while we rode Journey Into Imagination. When we came out of the ride it had started to rain. When we opened the autograph books almost all the autographs we had collected had washed away. Later that night I had to try and trace over any remainders of autographs so we'd at least have something to take home. So in conclusion, my tip is: don't get autographs with washable markers! And if you do, don't leave them in a place where they could get wet. Those rain showers come and go so fast! - Laura Sullivan

Try to go to a character breakfast in one of the parks for the first 8 a.m. seating before the park opens. You get to enter the park around 7:45 a.m., get your stroller/wheelchairs, eat a great breakfast and be in the back of the park riding the rides at opening time while everybody else is waiting in lines and just starting to come into the park. For a great photo opportunity, eat at the Crystal Palace and on your way there take a picture of your family in front of the castle -- since the park isn't open yet, your family will be the only ones in the picture. It's the only time you can ever do that! - Elizabeth Donoho

We just got back from a week at WDW. In years past we had to dig through the fanny pack for the pen so my daughter could get her autographs. What a pain! But this year I got smart; I attached Velcro to the pen and the book so they were together in the fanny pack. It was tons easier to get the book and pen out. - Dee Barnefiher

Save those receipts! Twice our receipts from food service locations at Walt Disney World included a 20 percent off total merchandise purchase (from store opening to 1 p.m.) coupon at the bottom, good at select locations, good through January 5. This happened at both Pizza Planet in Disney's Hollywood Studios and also at the Electric Umbrella at Epcot. - Cheyenna

Velcro makes a 3/4-inch x 10-foot roll with the hooks on one side and the loops on the other so it sticks to itself. I bought mine in Walmart but I've also seen it in Home Depot. I cut it off in one-foot lengths to attach a mug or folded windbreaker to my belt loop. It has a hundred uses, and rolls up to fit in a pocket or backpack. - Brian Phillips

When my wife and I took our nieces (ages 7 and 9) to Disney World two years ago, they especially wanted to meet Cinderella. I had already made reservations for the Cinderella breakfast in the castle, but I didn't tell the girls right away. Instead, I said only that if we were very lucky maybe Cinderella would invite us to meet her in her castle. In the meantime, my wife, Kathy, purchased some invitation cards at one of the shops, with Cinderella and the castle on the cover. She filled out the invitation from "Princess Cinderella," and, the day before the breakfast, secretly left them on the girls' pillows as we left the room for the day. When we returned, the girls found the invitations and were thrilled that Cinderella had personally invited them to breakfast! Also, don't give up if you can't get reservations for breakfast in the castle or for other popular character meals. If the meal is all booked up, try calling again for reservations just a day or two before the meal (or even the day of). Often there are cancellations. It worked for me! - Dennis Driggers

It goes without saying that kids will get more out of your Disney trip if they are familiar with the Disney characters and movies. Our 2 1/2-year-old daughter, Jaelyn, watches Disney videos and DVDs all year round, but right before a trip, we let her watch even more than usual. She knows the names of every character we see at WDW, and has no fear of them. We don't have the Disney Channel anymore, but we borrow Rolie Polie Olie, Bear in the Big Blue House, and many more DVDs from our local library. They can pull up a list of all the Bear videos in the system and order them from other libraries. Introduce your children to Disney characters before your WDW vacation and they will feel like they are meeting old friends when they see them in the parks. - Alea Laughery

Hang on to your hat! My husband wears a baseball cap to prevent sunburn. He was astounded to have it fly off his head on the Tower of Terror. He was very relieved he caught it. What he didn't realize was that our brand new annual passes had been in his front shirt pocket. They, too, had levitated. Fortunately, the Cast Member saw them and called our names. WHEW! - TJ

A Cast Member wrote in to remind us about some dos and don'ts concerning character autographs: "Please do not bring crayons, golf pencils or small tiny pens for the characters to sign with. Remember most characters have very large hands (or paws) and cannot hold these small items very well. Characters LOVE thick Sharpie pens and now they have retractable ones. These are great."
