Something big just happened over at Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

If you’ve been keeping tabs on the massive overhaul happening in Frontierland, you’re going to want to hear this. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has been under refurbishment for months now, and we just spotted a major sign that things are moving forward. Disney just started a very specific type of testing on the ride, and it’s a pretty good clue that we’re inching closer to reopening (with maybe a few surprises in store). Let’s get into it.
The Wildest Refurb in the Wilderness
Back in January, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad closed for what Disney said would be a long refurbishment. Like, over-a-year-long. And ever since then, we’ve seen crews working hard on the site — tearing up the old track, laying down new pieces, and making some very noticeable changes to the ride’s infrastructure. It’s been a big project, and the construction site has been buzzing nonstop.

But now we’re seeing something different — testing. And not just any kind of testing. The type that really matters.
What We Just Spotted
Recently, we caught a glimpse of something very interesting: ride testing vehicles on the Big Thunder Mountain track. Now, these aren’t your average coaster cars. They’re called ride envelope testing vehicles, and if you’ve never heard of them before, here’s the quick rundown: they basically test for rider safety and clearance (among other things).

These special vehicles are outfitted with extenders that stick out beyond where a regular guest would sit, almost like measuring arms. The idea is to make sure nothing along the ride’s path sticks into the space where a person’s arms, legs, or head might go during the ride. If anything’s too close, it’s a safety hazard, and Disney’s not taking any chances.

So yeah, it’s a huge deal that they’re at this stage. It means Disney is checking the rebuilt ride for guest safety, which typically happens after major construction work is finished. That’s not to say they’re wrapping everything up just yet, but it’s a pretty solid sign that things are moving forward.
There’s More Testing Happening Too
In addition to testing for rider safety and clearance, they’re also testing for things like weight loads, track alignment, and ride dynamics. Basically, Disney’s making sure that the ride can handle the forces and motion safely and smoothly.

Remember, this refurbishment included a full track replacement, which might mean the ride will feel smoother once it’s back. That’s not confirmed, but based on what we’ve seen in similar ride rebuilds, there’s a good chance we’re in for an upgraded ride experience.
So… When Will It Reopen?
Ah, yes, the million-dollar question. Unfortunately, we still don’t have an official reopening date from Disney. What we do know is that they originally said Big Thunder would be back “in 2026,” and a recent permit update points to sometime after April 15th, 2026 — that’s the new expiration date on the latest construction filing.

That means even though testing is happening now, there’s still plenty of time built into the schedule. Disney’s clearly giving themselves some wiggle room. But remember, just because the permit extends into April doesn’t mean they’ll definitely wait that long to reopen. We’ve seen projects wrap up before the final permit date before.
What’s This About “New Magic”?
One more thing. When Disney first announced the refurbishment, they mentioned that Big Thunder Mountain Railroad would reopen with “a little bit of new magic.” So far, we haven’t gotten any solid info on what that actually means, but we’re crossing our fingers for some of the projection effects you can see on the Disneyland version of the ride.

Of course, this could also mean some minor scene updates, enhanced lighting, or even interactive elements in the queue. We just don’t know yet — and Disney’s keeping those details under wraps for now.
TL;DR
To sum it all up:
- Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is still in the middle of a major refurbishment at Magic Kingdom.
- Disney’s started ride envelope testing and track diagnostics, which are big steps forward.
- These tests are all about safety and making sure everything runs the way it should.
- The ride is still scheduled to reopen in 2026, but testing could mean we’re making solid progress.
- There’s still the mystery of the “new magic” — and we’ll be watching closely to see what Disney reveals next.

We’ll be keeping an eye on construction progress on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, so stay tuned to AllEars for more!
