Walt Disney World as a whole, and the Magic Kingdom in particular, is in the midst of a massive transition, and people are still split about it. Ever since Disney announced that the Cars-themed Piston Peak and a Villains Land were coming to the park back at the 2024 D23 Ultimate Fan Event, there has been a spectrum of opinions expressed. Some more traditional Disney fans — myself included — have lamented that part of this expansion comes at the expense of the day one Rivers of America and Riverboat attractions, while others have questioned whether the additions are thematically appropriate for the Magic Kingdom.

Recently, we took to our Facebook page to ask our readers, “What Upcoming Disney World Changes Are You Most Excited About?” And we received some answers that caught us off guard, including one that has has looking at the Magic Kingdom’s upcoming projects with a new perspective.
Our Facebook query received many of the answers we’d expect. Several readers named the aforementioned Villains Land or Piston Peak, which many simply referred to as Cars Land, so sorry Disney, but that colloquial West Coast nomenclature is probably going to stick. Others specified the Tropical Americas expansion coming to Animal Kingdom, which will feature rides based on Indiana Jones and Encanto, while several Monsters, Inc. fans spoke up in favor of Hollywood Studios’ upcoming take on Monstropolis.

Reader Grant provided a detailed overview of all the upcoming changes and their complex thoughts, writing, “I think Villains Land could be really great. But honestly, all of the attractions they have announced are very intriguing to me. Except Indiana Jones. I loved Dinosaur and wish they didn’t get rid of it. Doesn’t mean I’m gonna boycott the Indy ride, I’m sure it will be great. I just have a hard time being excited for it because I didn’t want it in the first place. And I don’t ride Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster so my excitement for the new theming isn’t too high, but I NEED for muppets to have representation at WDW, so as long as that happens, I can’t complain. I wish there were more muppets than just the one ride, though.”

Reader Paula really caught our attention. After expressing excitement for Encanto, as well as the Zootopia: Better Zoogether attraction at Animal Kingdom, they wrote, “I’m intrigued to see what they do with Cars in Frontierland. I have a little boy who is obsessed with Cars.”

In truth, that’s the core of these Disney expansions. While longtime fans (once again, myself included) often have trouble dealing with change — even changes we asked for — the truth is that there are generations of Disney guests who adore these characters, want to see them in the parks, and will in turn, fall in love with them in the parks the way older generations have fallen in love with the classic elements of the parks. As long as the lands are executed well, which much of the concept art for Piston Peak and the rest indicate they should be, that will lead them to great success.

Disney’s upcoming expansions and additions are still controversial among some fans, but the truth is, they’ll likely be a success thanks to generations who have grown up with their characters. Though my visits to Florida are rare, due to distance, I will miss the Rivers of America. Journeying aboard a riverboat was always a romantic excursion for me. That said . . .
I have to acknowledge that for large numbers of Americans, the 19th Century was a little problematic. I don’t know if that was part of the calculus that led to the change, but I suspect it may have been at least in part.
