Are You Able to Cancel Genie+ Lightning Lane Reservations in Disney World?

The Disney Genie service has launched in Disney World and we’ve been busy figuring out exactly how it works.


There are two paid services within the Disney Genie, known as Genie+ and Individual Attraction Selection, and one of the biggest questions we’ve had about the Genie+ is what happens if you miss a Genie+ Lightning Lane reservation? Does the reservation disappear, or can it impact your day? Here’s what we experienced.

Disney Genie+ is a paid service that allows guests to skip the standby lines of select rides and zoom straight to the Lightning Lanes, or what used to be FastPass lanes. But Genie+ isn’t exactly like FastPass. It’s built into the My Disney Experience app and there are certain rules, like you can’t book the same ride more than once in a day.


Genie+ costs $15 per day, and paying guests can technically make unlimited reservations, with some exceptions.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to purchasing Disney Genie+!

The other paid Genie service is called Individual Attraction Selection (or pay-per-ride — note that you do NOT need to purchase Genie+ in order to pay for these). The qualifying rides and attractions are not included in the Genie+ service and cost varies from ride to ride depending on the day.  While you CAN cancel Genie+ reservations, as long as they fall within certain parameters (which we will get into), you cannot cancel or modify your pay-per-ride reservations.

Lightning Lane

Pay-per-ride options include two of the most popular attractions in each Disney Park, and if you reserve a time slot of 4PM for Rise of the Resistance, you will not be able to change or modify that reservation.

Here’s the difference between Genie+ and Individual Attraction Selection.

When you make a Genie+ Lightning Lane reservation, you select the first available window of time to enter the Lightning Lane of an attraction. You can typically make one Genie+ Lightning Lane at a time, and you can’t modify your reservation time or ride choice. You’d actually have to cancel and then rebook another ride or time to make a change.


If you find a better time or decide to choose a different ride, you have to cancel your existing reservation and quickly book the new time or ride you want. Reservations go quickly so you need to move quickly!


But what happens if you miss your Genie+ Lightning Lane reservation? Basically, we found ourselves stuck! Once the window of time expired, the reservation disappeared from My Disney Experience and we were unable to cancel or remove it. And because you can’t book the same ride twice in a day with Genie+, we couldn’t rebook it either!


There is always the free option to  go through the standby line or a virtual queue, but you can only use the Lightning Lane of each ride once, and if you had your heart set on this ride you might be disappointed.

So if you forget to cancel your reservation and you want to rebook, you’d have to visit Guest Relations to ask them to cancel it for you, which could be a hassle depending on lines or where you are in the park.

Guest Relations

We recommend that you cancel your Genie+ Lightning Lane BEFORE the reservation expires if you know you can’t make it. If your Genie+ Lightning Lane reservation expires at 7:20PM and you know you can’t make it before then, cancel it BEFORE 7:20.


As we stated above, this cancellation process doesn’t apply with Individual Attraction Selection (aka pay-per-ride), which does not allow modification or cancellation. You CAN cancel Genie+ reservations as long as it’s BEFORE they expire. Otherwise, you’ll need to visit Guest Relations unless you’re okay with missing out on that attraction’s Lightning Lane for the day.

And just to add, you CAN modify you party or group when it comes to your Genie+ Lightning Lane reservation. If you tap “add another guest” on the Tip Board AND they have the Genie+ you can easily add them to your group.


If they do NOT have Genie+, you will not be able to add them until they pay for the service. And you can remove them as well if necessary!

  1. This whole thing adds to the already complex world of Disney. Because of the “popularity” of Genie, I’m being told that I can’t expect to get any live help from Disney for at least 48 hours. Meanwhile I’m stuck in the AP park reservation trap where I cannot visit a park for the next 4 months without giving up the park reservations I have for a large family gathering in March. How magical is all this?
