Tips for Disney Parks & Cruise Lines

This was the neatest thing I have brought to Disney so far in our four trips. It is a book called "Disney Junior Encyclopedia of Animated Characters." Each character has his/her own page and a picture with a short story. The characters love it and make such a big deal over it. Most of the speaking characters spent a lot of extra time with my 8-year-old Emily and some even read their own stories with her. Cinderella read the evil stepsisters page to my daughter to show how mean they were to her. Will NEVER go again without it. Don't forget LARGE markers, as they are eaiser for Characters with gloves to hold on to. Makes a great coffee table book afterward and saves a lot of money on multiple autograph books. - Craig Chambers

-- Verify that the vacation rental services and facilities are reliable. Look for third-party endorsements on vacation rental websites and membership in industry associations, including AAA, Better Business Bureau, Vacation Rental Managers Association, local conventions and visitors bureaus or other tourism and vacation rental management groups. It is also helpful to read guest reviews, comments and testimonials and listings on guest review websites.

-- Review the terms and conditions of the rental agreement carefully. If you have any questions, be sure to inquire prior to reserving a home.

-- Only make reservations over a secure website or phone system that has the ability to accept major credit cards. You should expect to make a security or a reservation deposit.

-- Consider and inquire about travel insurance. Many professional management companies offer travel insurance to provide coverage should any unexpected or last minute emergencies cause a change to your travel plans.

-- Check for guest service contact. The vacation rental company should provide an emergency contact number that you can call at any time for maintenance issues, questions and guest services.

-- Choose a vacation home managed by a professional management company. Vacation rentals managed by a professional management company ensure quality and consistency, and present a variety of hospitality services, including professional cleaning and concierge services. Look for an "About Us" section on the vacation rental website for an established company history.

I saw in your tips that someone mentioned buying disposable earplugs for their children who don't like loud noises. As an audiologist I would like to recommend contacting your local audiologist and getting Swim Plugs prior to your visit. They're custom-made earplugs in vibrant colors with a cord to keep them together, and they float! That way you get double duty: they reduce sound while in the parks and keep your ears dry while swimming. - Cristin Richards

We have done this on the last four or five trips that we have been on with our little ones: Before we left home, we took large packing labels and printed the children's names and ages, as well as the cell phone numbers of all adults who might be with them. Also we wrote if they had any allergies. On the other side of the label, we took Disney scrap paper and made cool tags with pictures of princess or pirates. The older kids liked helping with this and making the ones for the little ones. We then laminated the label so if it got wet we could still read it. We punched a hole in each tag and added a key ring, then put it onto a lanyard with pins. The 4-year-olds wanted to wear them all the time and the littler ones could chew on it with no problem. We kept the little ones in the stroller 90 percent of the time, so adults knew where they were at all times, but this way if one of the 4-year-olds got lost all they had to do was show the back of the card and all the information someone would need was there. The girls still have these lanyards and collect pins on them. When the 4-year-olds went back to Disney with just Nana and Papa that was the first thing they made sure they packed. We also found little flashlights and put them on the key ring as well. That way if a ride was too dark it was just enough light for them but not enough to bother other guests. - Nicole

Tea drinkers -- I have also brought iced tea mix and made it before we left for the water parks. I filled the container with ice and the mix and some water. If I left it in the locker, in the afternoon when we were leaving it would be very cold and still sometimes had ice left in it. You have custom-made iced tea and it's much cheaper than buying drinks. - Teri D.

If you have small children that wear diapers at night, we found it extremely helpful to bring their pajamas and diaper to the park and change them there. This was great on late nights and made it easy to put them to bed even if they fell asleep on the way to the hotel. - Kelley
