Tips for Disney Parks & Cruise Lines
Epcot - I was also at Epcot on New Year's Eve 2012 along with Zamgwar and many thousands of others. We had done New Year's Eve twice before, both times at Hollywood Studios. If you want to ensure you get to ride the popular attractions with little wait, you should plan on being at the parks at least a half hour BEFORE the parks open. For special days like New Year's Eve, plan on spending 16 to 18 hours in the park so get plenty of rest the night before. My son and I were the first ones on Mission: Space while my wife and daughter went and got FastPasses for Soarin'. At 8:30 we were allowed to get new FastPasses and got them for Test Track, which was closed for most of the morning due to technical difficulties. Plan on doing attractions you might not normally do and try to rest when you can during the day. I caught some zzz's at the American Adventure. This was the first trip in almost 20 to the World that we walked the entire World Showcase and visited every country and saw all the movies. The only hiccup of the night was IllumiNations was supposed to start at 11:40, but was 10 minutes late starting. That threw off the New Year's fireworks as the "Countdown to New Year's" started at 12:10 a.m. on January 1, 2013. - Rob Ripper

For all those with peanut and/or tree nut allergies, make sure you have a meal at the Be Our Guest Restaurant (which was breathtaking, by the way). The chef advised us that no nuts are used on premises, and although the bread was made in a facility that may have resulted in cross contamination, ALL of the desserts were safe for those with peanut/tree nut allergies! My son was able to pick his own cupcake for dessert, and I'm not sure who was more excited -- him or me. The chef just had to prepare the cupcake without the garnish, which did not take away from it at all. Not to mention the cupcakes are amazing! I would highly recommend Be Our Guest, as most other sit-down restaurants are only able to offer ice cream without the Mickey sprinkles for dessert! - April Slavin

I wanted to let you know something about Splitsville. All the information that I have seen come out so far indicates that they are only taking walk-ups. I went to the Splitsville website and you can make reservations for Priority Bowling now. I made reservations for March and July. You select a date and time and you get the first available lane. Kind of like the concept of Advance Dining Reservations. You could wait awhile, but supposedly, less time than a walk-up. You pay a higher cost, but for the other planner people like me, they may like to know about this. I like knowing that my family will be able to bowl one day this July! - Kellen

One year when we were doing the Magic Kingdom it was very hot, so we were looking for a nice cool place to relax and get out of the heat while we were waiting until it was time to use our FastPass. We tried some air-conditioned stores and restaurants, but with so many people in them they just weren't really cooling us off. I had a brilliant idea and it worked -- we left the park, jumped on the monorail, and just rode it around for an hour. No one was on it, so it was nice and cool, and quiet, too! I had a headache, but after cooling off and relaxing in the quiet we all felt great and went back to the park. My son and husband even had a nap -- they can sleep anywhere! - LT

When our family stays on property we like to have breakfast at our hotel. The last time we went we stayed at the Caribbean Beach Resort so our room was pretty far from the food court. We didn't want to walk all the way back to the room to brush our teeth again after we had eaten and then walk again to get on the bus to head to the park. To solve this problem I purchased a few disposable toothbrushes. They are little pre-packaged toothbrushes that have a little bit of toothpaste on them. They are small enough to fit in your bag so you can take them with you to the parks to use after lunch and dinner, too. Just toss them in the garbage when you are done with them! - Nicole Benko

We love using the dining plan, however, sometimes we feel overwhelmed by all the sweets. When we have a quick service meal we get the chocolate chip cookie (it's pre-wrapped) instead of a dessert. Then we can eat it when we want or take it home with us. Also, when we do a quick service my husband and I share a soda and get a bottle of water to carry with us instead of getting two sodas that we don't normally finish. This keeps us from using a snack credit on bottled water later on. - Pam

I display my collected Disney pins on a denim vest that I hang on a hanger on the outside of my closet door, so I can see all my pins every day when I get ready for the day! Then when I go to Disney, I just pack the vest and I'm ready to go Pin Trading! - Missy Kellerman
My family, which includes my 4-year-old son who has a peanut and tree nut allergy, recently visited Disney World. I did my research and contacted the Special Diets and Dietary Needs cast members prior to our visit, I noted his allergy on all of our Advance Dining Reservations (ADRs) and made sure we mentioned it at all quick-service meals. I am happy to say everything went great! The only minor issue we ran into was at all of our ADRs, some type of bread or rolls were served before dinner and if they were not made in the restaurant, there was no guarantee that they didn't contain any nuts or were cross-contaminated in the bakery. It doesn't sound like a huge deal but when you are a hungry kid and everyone else is eating, it is tough. If I had known this in advance, I would have brought some crackers or something for my son to snack on. Also, a lot of the desserts are not made in the restaurants, so we ran into the same concern there. - Stacy Hearn
We brought our own stroller, which was very similar to those that you can rent from local stroller companies around Walt Disney World. We also brought a stroller lock, which is a retractable (unbreakable) cord that combination locks into itself. When parking our stroller, we'd just put this lock through two of the stroller wheels and lock it. This allowed cast members to still be able to move our stroller, but if someone accidentally tried to walk off with it, they wouldn't get too far before they realized it was the wrong one. - Kristina
Magic Kingdom - If you are in Magic Kingdom near closing time/sundown, you can sometimes see cast members doing water paintings of the Fab Five and friends. The very few times I've seen this bit of magic have been in early evening on the path from the hub to between Tomorrowland and Fantasyland (runs between Cosmic Ray's and the new Merida meet and greet). They use brooms and water to paint images of Disney characters on the sidewalk. They don't last long, and I don't think it's every day, either. The first time we saw this was truly an added pinch of pixie dust on our vacation. My 4- and 6-year-olds were amazed that it was just water! Now it's tradition to try to be in MK at the right time just to see if we can see them again. - Danielle

The Ghirardelli Soda Fountain at Disney Springs now has soy milk for their coffee drinks. It does not show up on the menu. They do not charge anything extra for it. - A. D. Johnson
