Tips about Epcot, Food & Beverage, Planning and Travel By Car

Epcot - To save money, instead of buying the Epcot passport in the parks, create your own passport! You can make your own by cutting regular 8x11 paper into fours and stapling the pages together. You can have your children personalize the cover with their names, so Kidcot cast members don't have to ask them. And for each country, you can have children draw out the flag of that country. This can help prepare your children for the experience of World Showcase! Remember to leave the adjacent page empty for the special messages the cast members will be writing. - Ban-Hing Ng

Epcot - Just wanted to add to the reason to pick up a Passport kit from Epcot. I got one on our last trip and secretly had each country stamp and write Happy Birthday to my husband on the Passport. A month after we got home it was my husband's birthday, so I put the Passport in a Mickey birthday card. He was very pleased and surprised with his multi-language greetings. - Sue Schultz

Epcot - On our last trip to Epcot, we purchased the passport set that allows children (or adults who are children at heart) to visit the Kidcot stations in each country and get a passport stamp. On that day, my daughter happened to be wearing a Minnie Mouse shirt that was personalized with her name, Isabelle, on the front. That turned out to be wonderful, since every time she went to get her stamp, the Disney cast member would write her name in their native language. I think they normally do this, but they never had to ask her name since it was on her shirt and every cast member seemed to notice it right away. Now, she has a wonderful keepsake with her name written in several languages. - Teresa Frangakis

Some area gas stations and mini-marts sell prepaid Sunpass stickers. You just stick one on your front window, then you don't have to stop at a toll booth. - Joyce from Florida

BE CAREFUL! I've seen a few people posting recently about receiving tickets for toll booth violations when renting a car. I thought a warning might save some people from getting caught and having to pay a much higher fee for that toll booth they miss. Some of the newer tolls in Florida (Orlando area at least) make it really easy for people who aren't from the area to miss them. They have those new overhead scanners that just go across the highway. People who have the Sunpasses just keep driving on the highway and their toll gets deducted. If you don't have a Sunpass you have to go over to the toll booths, but the problem is that they look like exits. The fines I've seen range from $11 to $25, which means an awful hefty toll that should have cost about $1. Make sure you know exactly what route you will be taking, and exactly how much the tolls will be. If you end up getting to your destination and realize you somehow didn't pay a toll you expected, I believe you can call and make a credit card payment and avoid the ticket. They have always (for a long time) had some toll booths that aren't manned so you need exact change. Besides those I heard that at certain times to save money even the previously manned toll booths might not have the manned booths opened. So make sure you have change in case you hit one of those. - rosebud

I found a tip that sounds really good especially if you are traveling with little ones. Get a pizza box for each child and you can store crayons, paper and color book in there and they can use the box as a desk when riding in the car. Crayons don't roll around the car and when done it all goes back into the box. I think you could just go to your local pizza store and ask for a clean unused box. - Suzy Kozicki

Our family has found an easy way to keep track of our dining information during a Disney trip. I use my cell phone's calendar to enter the times and confirmation numbers of all our meals. My phone is always with me, so I don't have to carry an extra list. If we're really trying to pack a lot into our day, I set my alarm to go off a half hour before our reservation. Having our confirmation number handy helped us out a couple years ago when our reservation got mixed up. - Deborah Shauan

Our most recent trip to Disney was a very busy one between extra activities and dinner reservations. Before leaving home, I prepared a schedule, which upon arrival I posted on the fridge (we stayed in a villa) with magnets I brought from home. This way, everyone knew where and when they needed to be somewhere. - Ann

Epcot - We went to WDW in October to avoid the crowds. It was almost sucessful! Epcot was jammed like New Year's Eve because of the Food and Wine Festival. My suggestion is to go to Epcot very early in the morning to catch the normal stuff and then come back later to enjoy the Festival! - William

I wrote you in January of this year regarding the fact that Earl of Sandwich in Disney Springs was using latex gloves in food prep. I wanted to update you with the fact that when we were at WDW at the end of September, we were happy to learn that "Earl" has now become latex-free! Of course, it's always important to ask at the time of ordering, but we were told they would be latex-free going forward. Unfortunately, when we went to purchase fudge at the Main Street Confectionery, we were told that they for some reason are still using latex gloves (despite the fact that we've been told over and over that WDW food prep is now latex-free) as well as vinyl gloves, so we were advised not to chance purchasing anything. Very disappointing! - Amy Keen

To locate my rental car without an antenna more quickly in the lot we take along our Baltimore Ravens flag that attaches to the car window. It is one of those flags hung on a plastic holder that gets rolled up in your car window. You roll the window down, place the flag's holder on the window and then roll the window back up. I know I have seen them with the American flag, sports teams and state flags. It is easier to spot the car since not too many cars have these and it is higher than the car's roof. - Kathie Sweeney
