Back in 2022, Disney teased a major Magic Kingdom expansion and we’ve been waiting for every single update we can get.

Since then, we’ve learned that Disney wants to expand the park in a huge way with executives calling it the “biggest thing we’ve done in the Magic Kingdom.” This “Beyond Big Thunder Mountain” project sounds like it will be a big one, and we may have just spotted a new update.
The Reedy Creek Improvement District (now known as the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District) has released its 2023 long-term land use plan, which appears to show an updated land usage designation for the area just north of Frontierland.

Land that the district once claimed was “Unsuitable” has now been deemed “Marginally Unsuitable.” Essentially, this means that the land that was once considered unavailable to be developed can now potentially be developed.

But, the area directly next to Big Thunder Mountain has been redesignated from “Suitable” to “Marginally Unsuitable.” This could mean Disney is in for quite a job if the Beyond Big Thunder expansion is to move forward. While the land can be used for this new project, Disney will have to do extensive development of the land.

In 2022, Disney mentioned 3 possible land ideas including Coco, Encanto, and Disney Villains, No IP was discussed at Destination D23 in 2023. There is also no confirmed timeline for this project, just that expansions are coming.

People keep forgetting, when discussing possible locations for the 5th Gate, about the big chuck of land in the corner between the Magic Kingdom and the golf course.
Honestly the new “suitability” updates just underline how much that area is Untapped Gold.
And y’know…were Disney so inclined to make the “Villain Land” a whole PARK instead of a new part of MK (symbolically outside the railroad), it’d be the perfect location to emphasize the contrast. “Dark Kingdom” or something….
