Remember last year when Disney teased there could be a Magic Kingdom expansion? Let’s revisit that, shall we?
This weekend, Disney is putting on Destination D23 where we usually get LOTS of fun news about what’s coming to Disney soon. Last year the company shared a lot of “blue sky project” ideas with us, and one of them was a Magic Kingdom expansion. At this year’s event, this is what the company had to say about that possibility!
We’ve been keeping up with all the panels happening over the weekend, and during the A Celebration of Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products panel, Bruce Vaughn, Chief Creative Officer for Walt Disney Imagineering shared some very exciting news about Magic Kingdom.
Vaughn, “We usually wait until we get everything perfect before we talk about any of our big ideas.” He also mentioned how much work goes into these ideas before the projects even begin. They want to expand Magic Kingdom in a huge way: like in the way Pandora expanded Animal Kingdom and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge expanded Hollywood Studios.
Vaughn called it the “Biggest thing we’ve done in the Magic Kingdom, bigger than New Fantasyland” before saying that there are plenty of places in the park to bring “big, big stories to life.” He mentioned Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and how there’s “a lot of room to play around with.”
However, although these ideas are “looking really great,” Disney still has a long way to go.
Josh D’Amaro, Chairman, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products, was on stage with Vaughn at the time and said, “We are about to go into overdrive at the Magic Kingdom.” He also said that the size and scale of the Magic Kingdom expansion is “exactly what every Imagineer dreams about.”
Now, as we’ve seen many times before, things can change in Disney World, but we’ll have to see what happens!
