REVIEW: We Ate A Chocolate Caterpillar in the U.K Pavilion in EPCOT, and We Would Do It Again and Again

Planning a trip to Disney World and not sure where you should eat while you’re there? Luckily, you’ve come to the right place!

EPCOT

Here at AllEars, we know all the ins and outs of Disney restaurants — including where you should definitely eat, and where you should skip. When it comes to food, you can never go wrong with World Showcase at EPCOT. We recently stopped by the U.K. Pavilion at Rose & Crown and are bringing you our FULL review!

Background

Rose & Crown in the UK Pavilion

Rose & Crown is a dining spot located in the U.K. Pavilion at EPCOT’s World Showcase. It has guests return to Merry Olde England in a fun and unique way. The theming of this place is that of an old English pub and restaurant.

Here’s what you need to know about dining at this restaurant.

Atmosphere

Rose and Crown Dining Room

The restaurant offers indoor and outdoor seating. Depending on when you have dinner, you’ll have a ringside seat for the nighttime fireworks spectacular, Luminous. At the pub, there is usually a pianist or singer entertaining the guests.

But enough about that, what are we eating?!

Food & Drinks

First up, we grabbed the Cottage Pie for $30. This is made with Braised Beef, Root Vegetables, English Peas, Jus, and Mashed Potatoes with Irish Cheddar.

Cottage Pie

We LOVED this! The meat was so tender, and the potatoes were fluffy. Plus, the cheese on top created a salty, gooey crust. The carrots and peas added a nice snap and crunch throughout this very tender pie.

So good!

It was very hearty, and the familiar ingredients felt comforting and nostalgic. We will definitely be grabbing this again.

How pretty is this cottage pie?

Then we grabbed the Eton Mess for $9. This is made with Strawberries, Whipped Cream, and Meringue. This is a traditional English dessert that goes back to Eton College. The story goes that a chef dropped the pudding meant for the Eton-Harrow cricket match; however, rather than throw it away, they scooped the mess into a bowl, thus resulting in the name Eton Mess.

This is an amazing plant-based option for dessert! This was very simple and light, which is perfect considering most of the food at this spot is heavy or fried. The fresh strawberries were in a lovely syrup that made them sweeter than sour. And the meringue was very fluffy and complemented the strawberries really well. We loved this one and would recommend it even if you are not eating plant-based!

So delicious!

Last up, we grabbed the Caterpillar Cake from the kids’ menu. This is made with chocolate mousse, a chocolate shell, M&Ms, and a chocolate biscuit on the bottom. This is based on another traditional English cake. There is a famous department in the U.K. that sells these Caterpillar Cakes and names them all Collin, and they quickly became a popular birthday cake option!

The chocolate shell had a nice snap, and the mousse was very smooth and fluffy. The chocolate cookie was crunchy and added some great texture to the mousse. Overall, if your kid likes chocolate, they will definitely be a fan of this dessert!

The most adorable cake!

Magic or Tragic?

This Disney World restaurant is a must-visit if…

  • You want a restaurant with a great view and ambiance. This spot is located in World Showcase and has outdoor seating that overlooks the water and gives you an amazing view of the rest of the countries around World Showcase.
  • If you like Traditional British food. This restaurant does an amazing job of crafting an experience that truly makes you feel like you’ve been transported to a pub in England, both through the atmosphere and menu, so if that sounds like something you would enjoy, definitely check it out!
  • If you want an amazing service experience. When we dined here, our servers were really top-notch! They explained every dish, its significance, and the fun backstory we got on some of our items. They really seemed to care about the details of the menu and its significance to traditional British food, which really elevated the whole experience!

You should skip this Disney World spot if…

  • You want an extensive menu. While we enjoyed what we got, this menu is extremely limited, which could make it difficult to appeal to a larger group. Especially if that group has picky eaters. So if you’re looking for a spot with a lot of options or need to cater to a party with a lot of different food preferences, we would suggest another spot.
  • You want a quick meal. This is a sit-down spot, which means that you will be taking a pretty big chunk of time out of your EPCOT day to eat here. If you’re looking for a quick meal, maybe try somewhere else.
  • You want to sample food around World Showcase. There is so much to try around EPCOT, especially during a festival, so if you’re looking for a light lunch so you can snack around the park later, this spot is not for you. This food is delicious but incredibly heavy, and would not be a great start to eating around the world.
