Disneyland Lightning Lane Rules Are Changing in 2026

“The Happiest Place On Earth” is rapidly changing, and fans of Disneyland’s Lightning Lane system should get ready for some significant changes in 2026!

A LOT is going on at the Disneyland Resort in 2026 as the progress either starts or continues on three MAJOR theme park expansion projects, in addition to a transportation transformation and restaurant upgrades. However, one major change that hasn’t been talked about enough is a shift in how things will work for Disneyland’s Lightning Lane skip-the-line system.

For the last few years, Disneyland has used the paid add-on Lightning Lanes as a modern-day FastPass service that allows guests to use a separate line that bypasses the long standby queues. This digital service is available as Multi Pass (guests can select multiple Lightning Lane windows throughout a day), Single Pass (a one-time pay-per-ride option for the most popular attractions at the two Disneyland parks), and Premier Pass (an expensive option that allows guests one-time access to every single ride at both parks on one day). As of this writing, two major Lightning Lane changes have already been announced for the Disneyland Resort.

Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway Lightning Lane

The most immediate change coming to the resort is the removal of the early entry perk for Disney-owned Disneyland Resort hotels. This long-time perk used to allow hotel guests into the theme parks 30 minutes before they officially open. Beginning January 5th, 2026, the perk is officially GONE.

Disneyland Rope drop

Disneyland will instead add a perk that gives one COMPLIMENTARY Lightning Lane per guest for any Multi Pass-eligible attraction. The only two attractions that aren’t eligible are Rise of the Resistance at Disneyland and Radiator Springs Racers in Disney California Adventure, as they both do not fall under the options listed in Lightning Lane Multi Pass attractions. Also of note, this perk is limited to the length of stay — meaning you DON’T get a free Lightning Lane entrance per day.

The second change will happen over at California Adventure, specifically. Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! is being removed PERMANENTLY in early 2026 at a currently undisclosed date to make way for a new Avatar-themed land coming to the area. This ride does have a Lightning Lane, and its removal will affect the park significantly in the short term.

Monsters Inc. Mike and Sulley to the Rescue

California Adventure is currently building or in the initial stages of adding FOUR NEW attractions to the park, but once Monsters, Inc. closes, the park will be shorthanded ride-wise for AT LEAST one full year.

With one less ride, the other Lightning Lanes will get slightly more backed up, as will the standby lines. In a park that lacks dark rides, the removal of one of California Adventure’s most in-demand dark rides is going to leave a painful impact elsewhere.

Mike, Sulley, and Boo

The park is currently building two new attractions in Avengers Campus and is about to begin work on new Coco and Avatar boat rides. Once these attractions are completed and operational, these queue issues will be greatly alleviated. In 2026, however, get ready for potentially longer waits everywhere else.

An Avatar attraction coming to Disney California Adventure will take guests on a journey to explore the wonders of Pandora, and the dangers that come along with the trek.

More changes could become apparent throughout the year, as it did with the surprising Lightning Lane Premier Pass release and the brief inclusion of a Lightning Lane for Pirates of the Caribbean. We’ll let you know about any developments that pop up.
