Disney California Adventure is expanding! The stunning Pandora section of Disney’s Animal Kingdom has proven to be popular over the past few years — so popular that ANOTHER Avatar-themed land is coming to Disneyland Resort! Disney just announced the NEW location of this land, and we have all the details.
Disney’s new Avatar land will be located in a portion of the Hollywood Backlot area at Disney California Adventure. So, what does this mean for the area, and what can we expect over the next few years?
Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue will close to make room for the new Avatar destination.
This new Avatar land is going to be HUGE — the area will host a new attraction inspired by Avatar: The Way of Water. Disney dropped new concept art for the area, and we can see new details!
Disney says they’re still in the early stages and will share construction timelines in the future.
This news comes after Disney previously confirmed that the Avatar-themed area will be home to a brand-new ride. So far, we know that the attraction looks like some type of boat ride, complete with six rows of seats. Disney explained that the attraction will be “An excursion in search of majestic natural wonders that can only be found on Pandora.”
Even though it’s a boat ride, it seems like this experience will look very different from the Na’vi River Journey ride at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. We can’t wait to see more!
Based on the concept art, this looks like more of a thrill ride than the slow, tranquil boat ride at Pandora in Animal Kingdom.

I’m a bit leary of Disney promising a boat ride with Animatronics. They can’t even get Tiana up and fully running. Can’t say Avatar floats my boat that much – only 1 ride in a new land? I would have rather had a Disney theme other than this. Guess we’ll see…
Well, I was hoping the ride would be from the original Avatar ride at WDW , Flight of Passage. A boat ride is not as exhilarating as the Banshee flight!
I don’t know. I’ll just have to wait and see avatar land. By the way, any chance we’ll get a new Muppets ride. I would like to see Tom Sawyer Island rethemed into Muppet treasure Island Island tour or Kermits rainbow connection, ride or even a Muppets Tom Sawyer Island. I hope Tiana’s Bayou Adventure gets updated with more character animatronics to look at on the ride. Also when is the Coco ride going to be built? Will soaring over California be changed to planes world tour? Also will autopia get rethemed into Lilo and stitch car ride? Or a wall e ride in tomorrow land. Let me know.
Am I the only one that thinks this is a bad idea? What about CA Adventure is even CA anymore? Although the ride at animal kingdom is cool, I’d rather it be Disney themed than avatar. That whole area could have been from the Maleficint movie from the land she lived in. I personally don’t like non Disney movie rides in Disney parks. It makes sense for Hollywood studios. But kinda over Indiana jones and think it’s odd they are putting that at animal kingdom as it seems dated. There is literally a dragon in the animal kingdom logo. A land with mythical creatures would have been way better!
Yes, They really need to add the mythical land to AK. There is a lot more potential then avatar or work in a mythical element to all regions. The yeti already adds this to one. For example what are the mythical animals of Africa.
