A new construction permit was just filed as part of the Magic Kingdom’s major expansion project.

In early June, Disney confirmed a ton of details about the upcoming construction projects coming to the Magic Kingdom, which were first announced at the 2024 D23: Ultimate Fan Event. We learned about the final day of operations for the Rivers of America (July 6th), details on the Cars-themed expansion of Frontierland (Piston Peak), and our focus today, the Walt Disney World Railroad.
Due to the upcoming construction of Piston Peak in Frontierland, the Walt Disney World Railroad will be changing for the foreseeable future.

First, the good news is that the Walt Disney World Railroad is changing, not closing. Instead of circling the entire Magic Kingdom, the Walt Disney World Railroad will instead operate in “shuttle” mode, running back and forth between Main Street U.S.A. and Fantasyland, with the Frontierland Train Station closed.

Speaking of the Frontierland Train Station, a construction permit was recently filed with the state of Florida for construction on the station, specifically citing labor, material, and electrical work coming to the station. We would imagine this work is infrastructure-related, as Disney works to transition the Railroad into shuttle mode.

While the Frontierland Station is only confirmed to be closed during the Piston Peak construction period, it seems likely that it will remain down (with the Railroad in shuttle mode) during the construction of Villains Land in the area “beyond Big Thunder Mountain” as well. This is not confirmed at this time, though.

Are you going to miss the full Disney World Railroad while it’s in “shuttle mode” during construction? Let us know in the comments below!
Yes! Going to miss it very much! We just went through a period of what, five years that it was shut down for Tron construction. Finally got to ride it again in February and consider ourselves fortunate we did since it will be in shuttle mode for what, another five to six years minimum. Ugh!
