When Will Construction End in EPCOT?

EPCOT has been in a state of change for years now as its huge transformation continues to progress.

Construction

Although the global pandemic impacted some projects, construction has continued on several attractions, shops, and restaurants, so we are left wondering when EPCOT construction will finally be “finished.”

Let’s break down which projects are still in progress and what we know about their timelines… then let’s make a best guess about when all these construction walls will be gone!

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind is a new ride in EPCOT that was originally scheduled to open on October 1st, 2021. After Disney World closed in March 2020, Disney has continued construction on the ride, and now it is scheduled to open in 2022.

We’ve seen hints of construction progress on the building, but so far Disney has not officially announced an opening date or season.

Moana: Journey of Water

We don’t know a lot about Journey of Water, but Disney has described this attraction as an interactive watery walking trail. Initially it seemed that Journey of Water would open sometime in 2021, but Disney has not released an official opening date at this time.

Given Disney’s silence about this attraction, our best guess is it could open sometime in 2022, but that’s purely a guess.  We saw aerial shots of progress in June of 2021, but there have been no official updates.

PLAY! Pavilion

The EPCOT PLAY! Pavilion was originally scheduled to open on October 1st for Disney World’s 50th anniversary, but at this time there is no scheduled opening date. This space will have interactive games and hands-on activities along with opportunities to visit with Disney characters.

PLAY! Pavilion at the EPCOT Experience

Back in 2020, we saw aerial footage of progress on the PLAY! Pavilion building, but again it’s hard to predict when this spot will finally open. We can guess 2022, but since we have no indications of what is being done — or not being done — inside the old Wonders of Life building, we pretty much have to wait for more information from Disney.

Empty Buildings

Mouse Gear

Now that Mouse Gear has been officially replaced as the EPCOT flagship store  by Creations Shop, the building is still there, just empty. So what does Disney plan to do with this building, and when will it be done?

Mousegear

It’s unlikely that Disney has zero plans for this space, but with nothing announced and lots of construction projects around EPCOT, this could be a project with a long timeline.

Electric Umbrella

Electric Umbrella was a Quick Service spot that served burgers and salads in Future World (now in an area likely part of World Celebration), and it closed in February 2020 as part of EPCOT’s big transformation.

Not long after Electric Umbrella closed, Disney World closed due to the global pandemic, and there have since not been any further announcements about this space. The building was largely demolished, and we continue to wait for more information on what Disney plans to do with this space.

Considering that Walt Disney himself said that Disney Parks will “always be in a state of becoming,” the most likely answer to when construction will end in EPCOT is never. However, we can guess that it’s possible for EPCOT’s big transformation to begin wrapping up sometime in 2022, though further construction delays are also very real possibilities.

One Reply to “When Will Construction End in EPCOT?”

  1. Much like Ratatouille was delayed until October 1 of this year, I fear Guardians of the Galaxy will be delayed exactly one year from its intended opening date to October 1, 2022. That will be the 40th anniversary of EPCOT’s opening. I hope I am wrong and it will be open sometime next summer.
