The flagship attraction of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, Rise of the Resistance, is set to open on December 5th in Disney World! This highly immersive attraction promises to take guests on a Star Wars adventure like no other! But for travelers who might not be familiar with the series, the story line might be a bit confusing. Not to worry though: we’ve got everything you need to know right here!
We’ve shared a preview of Rise of the Resistance in the past, but for those of you just joining us on Batuu, here’s the story!
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…
The ride is about a clash between the forces of the Resistance (led by General Leia Organa) and the tyrannical First Order (led by General Hux and Kylo Ren). The First Order is a militaristic organization that emerged from the remnants of the evil Galactic Empire, which you might remember from the original Star Wars trilogy.
When the Rebel Alliance defeated the Empire at the end of Return of the Jedi, they founded a New Republic to govern the galaxy. Unfortunately, the New Republic refused to heed Leia’s warnings about the First Order’s growing power, causing her to secretly fund and manage a new army to defend the galaxy.
Unfortunately, the First Order was able to amass far more power than the Republic ever expected, successfully destroying their entire capital star system and sending the galaxy into disarray. Now the First Order is attempting to reestablish imperial rule across the galaxy, and the Resistance is on the defensive.
During The Last Jedi, the Resistance was decimated by First Order forces, with only a handful of survivors escaping on board the Millennium Falcon. They’ve spent the past year attempting to reestablish bases and find support in the most remote parts of the galaxy, leading them to the planet Batuu… and to you.
What’s Batuu?
Batuu is a planet on the Outer Rim of the galaxy, making it far removed from Republic and Imperial influence. Once a major trading port, it’s fallen out of grace with the advent of faster-than-light hyperspace travel. Aside from smugglers and tourists, no one goes there… which makes it the perfect spot for the Resistance to set up base.
When you enter Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, you’re walking right into the middle of a Resistance base on Batuu, just outside the town of Black Spire Outpost. Here, Vi Moradi, the Resistance’s greatest spy, is looking to recruit any and all aid she can find for the cause. Unfortunately, the First Order has also come to Batuu, led by Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and General Armitage Hux (Domhnall Gleeson) themselves.
Your role in all of this? To join the Resistance! By accepting Vi’s invitation, you’ll be joining the fight against oppression and tyranny in the galaxy, and working to free Batuu and the rest of the universe from the First Order’s foul influence.
The mission, should you choose to accept it.
After entering the Resistance Base on Batuu, you’re greeted with a hologram of Rey (Daisy Ridley), a force sensitive hero of the Resistance and the star of the recent trilogy. She informs you that, as new Resistance recruits, you’re to meet with General Leia on a hidden base off planet. You’re taken to a transport shuttle piloted by Poe Dameron (Oscar Issac) and Nien Nunb (Kipsang Rotich). This is a short, standing simulator ride, similar to the pre-show elevator for Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts at Universal Studios Orlando. During your flight, you’re intercepted by a First Order Star Destroyer and pulled in via tractor beam! When the doors open, you’ll find yourself on this massive star ship, surrounded by Stormtroopers as First Order officers lead you to your cell!
You’ll be placed into holding, and taunted by your First Order captors. Luckily, all hope isn’t lost: Finn (John Boyega), a former Stormtrooper turned Resistance fighter, has infiltrated the Star Destroyer and is going to bust you out before blowing the whole thing sky-high! You’re led to a vehicle piloted by a hacked R5 Droid, which you board in your effort to escape! As you flee, you’ll be pursued by First Order Stormtroopers, towering AT-AT battle tanks, and Kylo Ren himself. There’s even a sequence where the treacherous son of Han Solo and Princess Leia attempts to slice open the ceiling with his lightsaber; one of the most dramatic and breathtaking effects ever seen on a Disney ride!
Eventually, you’ll make it onto an escape pod for a second simulator sequence as you crash-land back onto Batuu, narrowly escaping with your lives. From there, you’ll need to watch Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker on December 20th to learn the fate of the Resistance.
Repping the Rebellion
Rise of the Resistance opens in Florida on December 5th, and in Disneyland on January 17th. However, you can still start igniting the spark of resistance during your visit to Batuu.
Using the Play Disney Parks app at Galaxy’s Edge will transform your phone into a Star Wars Datapad, allowing you to take on secret missions for the Resistance… or the First Order, if you’re so inclined. You’ll rise in rank with your chosen faction by scanning cargo, hacking into First Order surveillance systems, and intercepting secure transmissions.
Want to recruit a mechanical pal to the cause? Droid Depot sells personality chips that will align your new Astromech to a chosen faction. Your little R2 unit will beep with joy at the prospect of joining the Resistance!
Looking for something a bit more hands on? Ohnaka Transport Solutions is hiring brave Resistance sympathizers for an important mission to Corellia that is absolutely not a veiled attempt at making Hondo lots of money! No sir, this is all for the cause! Head to the Black Spire Outpost Spaceport to learn more!
We’ll have more information about Rise of the Resistance before it opens on December 5th. In the meantime, let us know your thoughts in the comments! Are you excited for the new ride? More of a trooper than a rebel? We love hearing from you.
Until next time, may the force be with you!
