Tips for Disney Parks & Cruise Lines

Magic Kingdom - I enjoyed reading the article on bashful travelers (AllEars Newsletter Issue #460), as I am one myself. I had a comment that might help people who want to see the Monsters, Inc. show in Tomorrowland. There are tabletops in front of everyone when you sit down in the theater. On the tables, there are "reading" lamps every so often. Those conceal the cameras that they use to interact with guests. Avoid sitting directly behind one of those and you should be fine. - Mandy Blank

Meg Beriau shares some tips for 5- to 8-year-olds:

We go to Walt Disney World a couple of times each year, thanks to our DVC membership, and have learned a lot over the years:

-- One trick we found that works great is that we bring our MP3 players to the fireworks, if the noise is too much for the younger ones they can listen to their Disney favorites without the loud sounds, especially at Epcot!

-- Glo-Sticks! This is family favorite. I always stock up before we go, double bag them in checked bags and carry them along to the parks. They are always a big hit with the kids and it makes it easier to see the kids when things get dark at night or in rides. If a child jumps out of the stroller, you can see them better with a glo necklace or bracelet.

-- Crocs, the official footwear for our kids at Disney! We put socks on with them for plane travel, but they are great when we get to sunny Florida! I like that the toes are protected, but not sweaty and if they get wet, it is not a big deal since they dry quickly.

-- We also pack snacks and small cereal boxes in the carry on bags. It makes a cheaper and usually preferred alternative to the expensive snacks available in the parks. The kids can have a dry cereal in the morning before we head off to grab breakfast and we have the smaller portion snacks to offer all day in the parks without waiting in line and spending a lot of extra money.

I am writing as a person HIGHLY allergic to latex. My greatest joy about Disney is that I can travel there and know that they are using latex-free gloves and feel relaxed and comfortable. After seven trips to WDW I was disappointed during our trip last week... For the first time we stayed in a value resort (All Star Music) and to my dismay they handed out latex balloons to the children. There are balloons in the front foyer and the snack bar... Very disappointing... SO, if you are traveling to Disney you might want to consider other than value resorts. We have always stayed at deluxe resorts and never had these kinds of problems. - Karen Holycross

We have a 3-year-old who needed a stroller. We did not want to take our travel system stroller because it was too big and bulky. Umbrella stroller and rentals didn't look that comfortable for our toddler to sleep. So we searched for lightweight strollers and came across the Mia Moda Cielo (not available in stores). It folds up to the size of a carry on and includes a carrying case. It has open sides so our son would still get the breeze and could see all around. On the crowded buses and flights this is a MUST HAVE for guest looking for a lightweight stroller with canopy. The managers at Tony's Town Square loved it and wanted a demonstration. I bought a half yard each of featherweight and medium-weight NON-fusible interfacing at a fabric store. I cut the interfacing into 6" x 6" squares, squirted a small amount of liquid dish detergent on each, folded the squares, and stowed them in a couple of freezer zipper top bags. The lightweight ones are soft enough for eyeglasses, and the heavier ones are great for washing dishes. Voila! - Mary Vinson

Dawn makes a presoaped pad. They are individually wrapped and have soap in them. They are wonderful. Just be sure and pack it in a ziplock baggie, because once you open it, if you have something to put it in, you will get more uses out of it. We found it a great product to have around and you don't have to worry about the bottle spilling, or having wash cloths handy. - Dawn Clark

I bring along the Palmolive dish detergent cloths. They are slightly abrasive cloths (about 7 inches square) and have the detergent built in them (dry) and they suds up when wet. I cut mine in halves or quarters for doing light items like bottles, cups, etc. They are great because they can go on planes and there is no liquid to spill. - Jennifer Frawley

We took a short trip to the Magic Kingdom and Epcot, and it rained quite frequently. We have two children in strollers, and the best thing we bought prior to the trip were two $10 stroller covers. Our girls were comfortable and dry, even when it was pouring and windy. There were a lot of people using ponchos, but we noticed that they did not stay on the strollers like ours did. When it stopped raining, we put them in the storage area under each stroller (ours are the larger umbrella strollers). - Angie

In order to save on the extra bag charges and overweight charges, we often plan out a few interchangeable outfits and then just wash them while we are there. We found a laundry detergent called "Drop-ins". They are pre-measured pods that you just throw in the laundry (just like the dish detergent gel packs). They are small and light -- the only thing you need to do is make sure you pack them in a hard container like a tupperware, so they don't burst, or you will be doing laundry as soon as you get to Disney! I have found them at Target and at Shoprite. You can also order them online from Wal-mart, Target, Amazon, and their own website. Add a few fabric softener sheets and you're all set! - Lisa Ruiz
