There’s new construction afoot in Adventureland.

Walls have gone up near the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction at Walt Disney World. Could they be related to the highly anticipated upcoming pirate-themed lounge coming to the area, or something else entirely? We decided to find out.
On June 19th, 2024, we noticed new construction walls had popped up in the Plaza Del Sol Caribe store in Caribbean Plaza, near Pirates of the Caribbean.

This work seemed to line up with a construction permit we discovered earlier this month, which was for work for work on 4873 CARIBBEAN WY # B, the technical legal address of Caribbean Plaza. The permit extends through August 2025, slightly longer than the usual one-year date range we typically see with these kinds of permits, so we think it may be related to the upcoming Pirates Lounge dining location. The permit lists longtime Disney contractor Whiting-Turner, and is not credited to Walt Disney Imagineering, but rather to Walt Disney World for general construction.

Announced at Destination D23 in September of last year, Disney said that the upcoming lounge will “extend the story of Pirates of the Caribbean” and be an environment where “pirates of all ages gather to tell their tales.” The concept art for the location also featured the iconic Barker Bird animatronic that had been outside of Disney World’s Pirates of the Caribbean attraction from 1973 through 2006 and was displayed at Downtown Disney for several years after.

We queried a Cast Member as to whether the new construction was related to the upcoming lounge, and they replied that they were unsure, but that they believed the lounge would be located where the Pirates League used to be. If that is true, then this would be its own separate construction project.
Nothing has been confirmed about the lounge just yet, but we’ll let you know as soon as Disney makes announcements.

Speaking of construction potentially linked to the Pirates Lounge in the area, there’s still nothing going on at Tortuga Tavern, weeks after we were told that the restaurant was moving to seasonal operation.

The latest construction in Caribbean Plaza could be linked to the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean-themed lounge, or perhaps a related beautification project for the area as Disney attempts to revitalize its heavy pirate theme. Stay tuned to AllEars for further coverage of construction in the area.
