Blink, and you’ll probably miss one of the most unique hidden character moments in Magic Kingdom.
The park is packed with tiny details that most guests walk right past every single day. Some of them are classic Disney references that only longtime fans recognize if they know where to look. One of the best examples is a surprising appearance from a character many people didn’t even realize still shows up in the park. If you’re walking through Liberty Square anytime soon, there’s a good chance a certain lanky schoolteacher is watching from above.
If you’ve spent any time in Liberty Square, you’ve probably wandered into the charming little holiday store called Ye Olde Christmas Shoppe. It’s one of those places that feels festive no matter what month you visit. You’ll find ornaments, decorations, and even personalized souvenirs that make for an easy and affordable keepsake.
But the real surprise is not inside the shop. It’s above it. Look up at the window above the storefront, and you might notice something unusual happening every few minutes. If you catch it at the right moment, a tall and slightly nervous-looking figure appears inside the window. That character is none other than Ichabod Crane. Yes, that Ichabod Crane.
If the name doesn’t immediately ring a bell, he’s the main character from the classic Disney animated short The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The story was later included in the feature film The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad.
It’s a pretty fitting character to appear in this corner of Liberty Square. Just across the path, you’ll find Sleepy Hollow Refreshments, which is known for its funnel cakes and famous waffle snacks. The location name is a direct nod to the same spooky story that made Ichabod famous. So if you’ve ever grabbed a snack there, you were already standing right next to a reference to the character without realizing it.
The actual Ichabod appearance is pretty easy to miss, though. The animation only runs for a short time before disappearing again, which means you could walk past at the wrong moment and never notice it happened.
When we timed it during a recent visit, the scene appeared roughly every five minutes and lasted about a minute and forty seconds. It’s part of a continuous loop, so you never have to wait very long if you just hang around the area for a bit.
There’s also a small visual cue that the show is about to start. Right before Ichabod appears, the window begins to glow with a soft blue light. That glow is a sign the projector is turning on, which means the performance is about to begin. Once you see the light, keep your eyes on the window, and you should see Ichabod pop into view shortly after. It’s a small moment, but it’s the kind of hidden storytelling us Disney fans love.
Liberty Square already has a lot of subtle references tucked throughout the land. Nearby you’ll find the spooky grounds of Haunted Mansion, where sharp-eyed fans can even spot a tribute to Mr. Toad in the pet cemetery. That nod connects back to Ichabod’s film partner from the same 1949 movie. Details like this are exactly what make exploring the park so fun.
You can ride the attractions, watch the shows, and still discover something completely new years later. So next time you’re walking through Liberty Square on your way to dinner at Liberty Tree Tavern or heading toward the Haunted Mansion, take a second to glance up at the window above the Christmas shop.
