Reopening Month Revealed for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in Disney World

SO many things are being changed in Disney World right now, including some of our favorite rides.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster is getting the Muppets treatment, Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin is reopening in April after its overhaul, but what about Big Thunder Mountain Railroad? Well, now we’ve got a reopening month for this popular coaster!

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is set to reopen in early May 2026, though an exact date has not been shared by Disney. The attraction has been closed since the beginning of 2025 to get a refresh.

Crowds at Big Thunder

Disney has shared that it will reopen with “new magic” and the “shine and polish” of an all-over refurbishment. This makeover comes with new geysers, new lighting and effects, as well as a new, smoother track.

The ride exterior has been transformed slightly to more seamlessly fit with the new Cars-themed Piston Peak expansion of Frontierland. But one of the additions to Big Thunder that we’re really excited about is the Rainbow Caverns! These will be “spectacular natural caverns full of phosphorescent pools, shimmering and illuminating iridescent stalagmites (the ones on the floor) and stalactites (the ones on the ceiling).” However, they’re not as docile as they appear, Disney says that a “menacing rumble from deep within the mountain may be a sign that we ain’t welcome.”

We’re so excited to ride this coaster again when it reopens in May. We’ll make sure to let you know when Disney drops an official reopening date.

  1. Disneyland shouldn’t charge full admission prices if some attractions are being refurbished. Mickey Mouse is ripping the guests off.
