Cruising with Disney is magical… but there are some sneaky rules that could catch you off guard.

Disney Cruise Line is a bit different than the parks — while it’s still Disney-level fun and service, there are rules in place (for safety, courtesy, and ship operations) that you might not even realize you’re breaking. Some of these rules seem small, but they can get your items confiscated, or at the very least, get you a stern warning from a Cast Member. Let’s talk about a few of the most common cruise rules people accidentally break so you can avoid any hiccups on your vacation.
Bringing Prohibited Electronics and Appliances
This is the big one — and honestly, the one most people mess up without knowing. Disney will confiscate certain electronic items if you try to bring them on board. Yes, even if you’ve brought them to a Disney World hotel before. Some of these items are fire hazards, some mess with ship operations, and some are just plain not allowed. Here’s what needs to stay at home:
- Surge protectors, extension cords, power strips, and multi-plugs
- Clothing steamers
- Heating pads
- Bottle sterilizers and warmers (unless you get the approved ones from Guest Services)
- Remote-controlled devices (including those droids you built in Galaxy’s Edge)
- Strands of lights or any kind of decorative bulbs

If any of this sounds familiar, double-check your bags. Security will check for these items during embarkation, and if they find them, they’ll hold onto them for the duration of your cruise — you’ll get them back when you disembark. No exceptions and no refunds if something gets tossed.

If you’re traveling with a baby, don’t stress — Disney has a limited number of bottle warmers and sterilizers that you can request through Guest Services. And if you need to press your clothes, use the self-service laundry rooms or pay for the onboard pressing service.
Hanging Laundry on the Balcony
It seems harmless, right? You just want your swimsuit to dry in the sun. But hanging clothes, towels, swimsuits, or anything over your verandah railing is a major no-no. It’s against Disney Cruise Line safety policy — and they’re very serious about it. The wind on open water can be intense, and even if your swimsuit seems secure, it can get blown overboard in an instant, creating a safety issue or even littering the ocean.

Each stateroom has a clothesline in the bathroom for a reason — that’s where you’re supposed to dry your laundry. It’s small, but it’s safe and meets all the guidelines. So, skip the balcony clothesline, unless you want a knock on your door from a crew member kindly telling you to knock it off.
Reserving Chairs at the Pool Deck
This is a hot-button issue on every cruise ship, and Disney is no exception. Yes, we get it — the pool deck gets busy. But saving chairs with towels, books, flip-flops, or your kid’s stuffed Stitch plush is actually against the rules. Disney Cruise Line crew members are technically allowed to remove unattended belongings after a certain amount of time, especially if the chairs are clearly being saved.

While enforcement varies depending on the cruise and the crew, it’s still something they can do, and it’s frustrating for other guests who are just trying to find a seat. The best strategy if your group wants to spend time at the pool, go early or take turns grabbing snacks while someone holds your spot, but don’t just drop stuff and disappear for hours.
Bringing Alcohol (The Wrong Way)
Yes, you can bring your own alcohol onto a Disney cruise, but the rules are super specific, and breaking them means losing your drinks before you even board. Here’s what you need to know:
- Alcohol must be in your carry-on. If you pack it in your checked bag, Disney will confiscate it.
- You’re limited to two bottles of wine (750ml) or six beers (12oz) per adult.
- Everything must be unopened and in its original container.
- Anything over the limit will be thrown away — no storage, no exceptions, no refund.

So if you’re trying to bring your favorite bottle of wine to celebrate, great — just pack it correctly and follow the rules. Don’t try to sneak it in your suitcase. It’s not worth losing your entire stash.

We know Disney Cruise Line is supposed to be relaxing, and it totally is — but that doesn’t mean there aren’t rules to follow. And a lot of them are meant to keep everyone safe and happy, not just to make things harder for guests. So before you pack up for your magical voyage, double-check your bags and ditch anything that’s on the no-go list.
