We Must Remind You About This GAME-CHANGING Rope Drop Rule in Magic Kingdom!

Disney just made a major move that could completely change your morning strategy.

If you’re someone who likes to beat the crowds and rope drop your way through Magic Kingdom, there’s a new rule you need to know before you plan your park day. The way Early Entry works has changed, and now it impacts way more rides than before. Whether you’re staying at a Disney resort or not, this update will affect how you start your day and what rides are worth your time right at open. Here’s what’s different — and how to make the most of it.

Let’s start with a quick refresher: rope drop is Disney-speak for being at the parks before they officially open, so you can get in line for your first ride of the day and skip the longest wait times. It’s a big deal, especially for Magic Kingdom, which has some of the most popular (and slowest loading) attractions in all of Disney World.

Now here’s the game-changer: Magic Kingdom has updated the way Early Entry works — and it’s giving resort guests a huge new advantage. Previously, if you were staying at a Disney World hotel and got that 30-minute Early Entry perk, you were limited to only Fantasyland and Tomorrowland. That meant you couldn’t even walk into Frontierland, Adventureland, or Liberty Square until the park officially opened. You had to wait at the ropes while Cast Members kept things closed off.

Well… not anymore.

Now, Disney resort guests can walk over to those lands before the park officially opens, and get in line for rides like Jungle Cruise, Pirates of the Caribbean, and even Haunted Mansion. The catch? These rides still don’t start operating until the regular park opening time — but resort guests can now be the first in line, ready to go the second they do.

This may not sound like a big deal at first, but trust us—it completely shifts the rope drop strategy. Let’s talk Tron Lightcycle / Run for a second. Even though it’s in Tomorrowland, it wasn’t previously included in Early Entry. Now, resort guests can get in line for Tron starting at 8:30 AM, even though the ride won’t start boarding until 9. Cast Members even confirmed that guests can start putting items in lockers by 8:45. So if you’re fast, you might be flying through the Grid just minutes after park open. That’s huge—if you’re a resort guest.

TRON still is not included in Early Entry

But if you’re not staying at a Disney hotel, this new change might work against you. Since resort guests can already be in line for Tron, by the time you get through the gates at 9 AM, the line will already be at least 30 minutes deep. So, unless you’re dying to ride it first thing, Tron is probably not the best use of your rope drop time anymore.

Here’s how we’d adjust:

If you’re a Disney resort guest, you now have a whole new world of options for rope drop. Not only can you go straight for Seven Dwarfs Mine Train or Space Mountain like before, but now you can also line up for rides in Frontierland, Adventureland, and Liberty Square. That means you could get a head start on Big Thunder Mountain or Jungle Cruise—two attractions that rack up long lines later in the day. You’re basically picking your top-tier ride and getting in front of everyone else who has to wait for the 9 AM rope drop.

And for non-resort guests, the strategy flips. Since Fantasyland and Tomorrowland are the only lands open during Early Entry, those queues will already have a 30-minute head start before you even step foot inside. So we don’t recommend racing to Tron or Peter Pan’s Flight first thing if you’re not staying on Disney property—you’ll just be joining the back of an already long line.

Instead, we recommend heading toward Adventureland or Frontierland right away. Because even though resort guests can get in line now, the actual ride won’t have started operating yet, so you’ll still be among the first non-resort guests to ride.

Our go-to move is to start over in Frontierland with Tiana’s Bayou Adventure—that line gets brutal fast.

The bottom line is this rope drop rule change is BIG. If you’ve been to Magic Kingdom before and have your usual rope drop rhythm down, you’ll want to adjust for this update, or risk spending your precious early morning hours stuck in a longer-than-expected line.
