Why Planning a 2024 Disney World Vacation is So Hard Right Now

Are you planning a trip to Disney World in 2024?

Planning a trip to Disney World is hard

Well, you might be a little overwhelmed by it all because there is a LOT of planning you need to do. A lot is changing in Disney World, too, so that can complicate things for you. But it’s okay, we KNOW it’s hard.

While a trip to Disney World may be on your “to do” list, it may be hard to pinpoint when exactly you want to travel.

Why is planning a trip so hard at the moment?

Well, here’s the thing. A LOT is going on in Disney World. Some new attractions opened in 2023, more are scheduled to open, and EPCOT is still home to a LOT of construction. There are still some things we don’t even have completion dates on.

Some projects don’t even have opening timelines yet.

That means it could be hard deciding WHEN to travel to Disney World if you want to check out new attractions, restaurants, hotel rooms, and more. Let’s look at what we DO know, what we don’t know, and when you should plan your trip as a result.

What is coming in 2024?

There is SO much coming to Disney World in the last half of 2023 and in 2024, including new attractions, restaurants, and hotel expansions. We’re going to break it down into categories.

Attractions

Let’s start with new attractions. In EPCOT, Journey of Water — Inspired by Moana is set to open in fall 2023. The attraction will take you through interactive water features, and get this — it has LOTS of shade, which makes us think it’s going to be VERY popular. If you’re booking a trip for any time in 2024, you should be able to experience this new attraction.

In Magic Kingdom, Splash Mountain is being rethemed into Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, a fun water ride with a story and characters from The Princess and the Frog. The opening timeline for this ride, though, is late 2024, so if you’re wanting to book a trip, you might need to book it for later in the year.

The ride will officially open in 2024

Hotels

In March 2022, Disney announced that it had plans to expand Polynesian Village Resort by adding some new Disney Vacation Club villas, with new recreation areas and dining. That project is currently underway and will feature rooms “inspired by the early concepts” for the resort.

Disney has not yet announced an opening timeline for the new DVC villas, but the company hopes to have it completed in late 2024.

This is one of the biggest of the many hotel changes underway.

Restaurants

Okay, here’s where things get complicated because a LOT of new restaurants are coming to Disney World in either the last part of 2023 or potentially in 2024. First up, Summer House on the Lake is coming to Disney Springs in late 2023. So it should be open by 2024.

Another new restaurant, EET by Maneet Chauhan, will be coming to Disney Springs, too! Maneet Chauhan, the acclaimed James Beard Award-winning chef and Food Network star, and Vivek Deora, an international hospitality entrepreneur, are bringing Indian cuisine with a southern flare to Disney Springs sometime in 2023.

Blue Ribbon Corn Dogs, home of that controversial Pickle Corn Dog in Disneyland, is coming to Disney’s BoardWalk. No opening timeline has been announced, although it should be coming later in 2023, meaning you can try that Pickle Corn Dog for yourself in 2024.

The Cake Bake Shop by Gwendolyn Rogers, which will be both a cafe and restaurant is also headed to Disney’s BoardWalk. The only information we have so far is that it’s set to open sometime in 2023.

Finally, the Disney Dining Plan will be returning on January 9th, 2024. The plan allows guests to pay for their meals in advance by purchasing a plan that includes a certain number of dining credits. There will be two plans available: a Standard Dining Plan and Quick-Service Plan. You can read more about both here.

So, when should you plan your 2024 vacation?

Well, it depends. If you’re wanting to ride Tiana’s Bayou Adventure and/or stay in one of the new DVC villas at the Polynesian Village Resort, you’ll want to book your trip for later in the year. So you’ll want to look at dates as late in 2024 as possible.

Everything else, though, you might be okay if you book your trip earlier in the  year, depending on your personal preference and schedule. Many of Disney World’s current projects are set to open later in 2023, so they should all be available by early 2024. However, we know that delays sometimes happen, so if you want to play it safe, later in the year could still be your best bet.
