Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party – 2009

I know you’re saying to yourself, “It’s too early to be celebrating Christmas.” And in most cases, I would agree with you. But partaking in this festive season at Disney World is something special. The parks and resorts take on a magical charm when decorated in anticipation of Ol’ Saint Nick. Enchantment is everywhere. So the fact that Disney fudges a little on the date and hangs the holly early is okay by me.

And while they’re at it, why not throw a party or two in anticipation of the big day. On selected nights during November and December, the Magic Kingdom becomes a holiday play place complete with snow, familiar songs, special treats, and overall holiday revelry as Disney presents Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party (MVMCP).

Hours:

The official hours of Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party are 7pm to midnight. However, guests attending the party are admitted as early as 4pm. At this time, the turnstiles on the right are used for party guests and the turnstiles on the left are used for day guests. Note, even though you may enter the park before the party starts, the special events do not begin until 7pm.

Entrance to the Right

On party dates, the Magic Kingdom closes promptly at 7pm. Numerous signs are posted at the Transportation and Ticket Center and the Main Gate stating this. Come 7pm, cast member scour the park and politely ask all those without a wrist band to leave (see below).

Park Closes at 7pm

Upon entering the Magic Kingdom, a cast member will place a plastic band on your wrist. This will identify you from the day guests and you will need it for identification. If somehow you do not get a wrist band at the Main Entrance, they are also handed out at the Rose Garden section of the Hub starting at 4pm. You will be required to present you MVMCP event ticket at this time. Note, Disney rotates the wrist bands from night to night.

Castle Lighting Ceremony

At 6:30 each evening, Cinderella Castle is transformed into a sparkling wonder. Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Donald, Cinderella and her prince and fairy godmother work their magic to bring thousands of twinkling lights to life. This show is available to all guests, not just those attending MVMCP. The show is short, only about eight minutes long. I’ve captured the essence of this magic moment in the following short video.

Characters:

Character Meet and Greets take place around the park from 7pm to 11:30pm. Unfortunately, on the night I attended, it rained the first three hours of the event and I wasn’t able to get many pictures. But don’t worry. Rain is rare in Orlando during November and December. This storm was the remnant of hurricane Ida. Also, since I wasn’t able to check out all of the character locations, I will not be able to answer your questions as to what other characters are appearing for this event. Sorry.

Mickey’s Once Upon A Christmas Parade

For many, the Christmas Parade is the highlight of the evening. Presented at 8:15 and 10:30, Mickey and Minnie lead the procession followed by an abundance of their friends and finally, Old Saint Nick himself. The melody is catchy and smiles contagious. If you want to good viewing location, you should arrive at least thirty minutes in advance of the first parade. The second procession is definitely less attended so you might want to sample the attractions during the first show and save this magical event for later in the night if your young ones can stay up that late.

  1. Jack,

Could you give me an idea as to when the “Disney Very Merry Christmas Party” tickets go on sale? I called Disney revservations today and they said they had no idea. I then asked if they knew when they went on sale in 2010 and they said they didn’t have access to that information. Thanks.

    Gayr

    Jack’s Answer:

Disney has not announced the dates for the Halloween or Christmas parties for 2011. Allears is checking for this information daily and will post it (probably on the front page) the moment we know.

  2. We are going to Disney the week of Dec.11-18th.
Is it better to go to the Mickey Christmas party on a tuesday or thursday? we want the least crowded night if there is such a thing. Also, any tips on how to get into the good restaurants? Reservations are already all booked for all the high rated ones and we are 6 months out! ugh!!

    Jack’s Answer:

I really don’t know which day will be better. But as a general rule, the closer you get to Christmas, the busier the party.

Because of the Disney Dining Plan, reservations have become very difficult to secure. You really need to call 6 months in advance these days. All I can suggest is to keep trying. Also check Disney on-line reservations.

  3. Jack,

What was the make/model number of the camera that you used to get these shots?

    Jack’s Answer:

I use a Nikon D80 with a Nikkor 18-200 zoom lens. However, I also use Paint Shop Pro on the computer to tweak my pictures.

  4. Hi Jack
    A great post!
I have just bought tickets for the 2010 MVMCP on 8 Nov. We are actually holidaying in Clearwater but couldn’t resist the opportunity to go to the party. As we will have to drive over we obviosuly want to get as much time in the park as possible but don’t intend to get general admision tickets so entry before 7pm would be great. In previous years I assume the entry from 4pm has been ‘unofficial’- I know you can’t give a guarantee but it is likely that they will do something similar this year and let guests with party tickets in early?

    Jack’s Answer:

I have attended both the Halloween and Christmas parties for the last three years. On all occasions, the park opened to party goers at 4pm. One reason I think this will continue is that it’s a form of crowd control. It’s better to have 5-10 thousand people arrive over a three hour time period rather than all at once.

  5. Thanks for the information. My family and I will be going in November and hope to enjoy the Christmas party. I have a child with a food allergy (tree nuts). Do you know where i can find out allergy information about the cookies and treats provided at the party? Thanks

    Jack’s Answer:

Normally, if you visit any Disney restaurant, even the counter service restaurants, you can ask to speak to the chef or manager and they will bend over backwards to help you with food allergies. But since the cookies are served throughout the parks (and possibly purchased from an outside vendor), I’m at a loss as to what to tell you. However, I have two suggestions.

    1. Contact Disney’s General Information phone line: 407-824-4321 Maybe they can point you in the right direction.

    2. Stop by City Hall when you get to the Magic Kingdom. They will certainly be able to help you.

  6. We’ll be attending the MVMCP on the 15th as well! Can’t wait — Wishing it would stay warm all week though 🙁

  7. Any scoop on where to find tickets for the sold out party on the 18th?

    Jack’s Answer:

Sorry. I can’t help you. “Sold out” means just that, Disney has no more tickets to sell — not even to cast members. You could check eBay, but I would advise against this. You have absolutely no way of knowing if the ticket is any good — and Disney will NOT honor bogus or out-of-date tickets.

  8. We are here in Disney the week of Dec 10-16th..warmed to the mid 80’s today, Sunday. We attend Mickey’s party Tue the 15th, thinking it will be less of a crowd. I will up date you when we return to the cold weather on the 16th.

  9. We will be at Disney World from 12/13-12/18. The information you’ve provided for the MVMCP is much appreciated and we can plan accordingly. This will be our first Christmas at Disney and we’re attending the party on 12/15. I have 3 little grandsons who love Buzz so seeing the show at Tomorrowland will be a must. We attended the Not So Scary Halloween party in 2007 and it was crowded but well worth the cost. What’s not to love about Halloween or Christmas at Disney World!!

  10. The Totally Tomorrow show is no replacement for the old “Night before Christmas” show. There are no seats in the new theater, just a few benches at the edges.

The rest of MVMCP was fine

    Jack’s Comment:

I enjoyed the Totally Tomorrowland show. I think it’s cute and worth seeing. But I also agree with you. It does not compare with the Night Before Christmas show which was twice as long and had a cast three times as big. I do not understand why Disney removed the Galaxy Theater. And the total lack of shade and seating in the new theater is appalling.

  11. Oh my goodness I almost cried while watching the videos. Everything looks so breathtakingly beautiful. The lighting of Cinderella’s Castle looked just like it had snow on it. I know that when I actually get to see it I will break down in tears. My family and I can’t wait to see this on December 10, 2009. I hope I can fit all the pictures I want to take in my digital camera!

  12. this was so helpful!!
thanks- any great tips on where to watch the Mickey’s Once Upon a time parade?
    thanks, Lori

    Jack’s Answer:

If I want to film the parade, picking a spot on Main Street is the better choice as it is well lit and allows for better shots. However, Main Street is a very popular location and you need to arrive very early to get a “curb-side” spot.

If I’m just going to watch the parade, I like to stand just to the left of Hall of Presidents (when facing the attraction). This is the spot where the parade turns toward the Hub so you get a “straight on” view and a “side ” view of the floats.

  13. Thanks for the great report & fabulous pics! I’m thankful that we’ll be able to attend MVMCP for the first time this year, but I’m bummed that the ‘Night Before Christmas’ won’t be presented. Is the ‘Celebrate the Season’ show at the castle somewhat similar? Thanks again!

    Jack’s Answer:

The “Celebrate the Season” show is similar in feel as “Twas the Night Before Christmas” show, but the content is different. First, it’s only 15 minutes long as opposed to 30. Yet, you still get to see singing, dancing, and characters. If you have kids, “Celebrate the Season” is a must see. But I would also recommend the “A Totally Tomorrowland Christmas Show” presented in Tomorrowland. It is very cute and a little different that other Christmas shows you’ll see.

  14. is the MVMCP parade a different parade than the parade that is during the daytime?

    Jack’s Answer:

Up until December 18, the afternoon parade (non-Christmas) is different than the one shown at MVMCP. From the 19th on, it’s the same Christmas parade is shown in the afternoon and evening.

  15. We are so excited to take our two foster children to MVMCP on December 4. My question is, are the lines long to get on the rides? What was your average wait time?

  16. Wow! All of these pictures are making me sooooo excited! We just booked today and are going down for Christmas. I can’t wait!
    — Is it still warm, or what is the weather like, how should someone dress?
    Thanks!

  17. We just got back from Disney. Thanks for all of the great info. We went to MVMCP on the 20th. It was fantastic. The wait for rides were very short. The only advise I would give is to ride all the rides when you get there and not worry about “watching” the castle light up and getting on Main st. to see the snow. The Castle stays lit all night and snow falls during the parades on Main St. Also, most people go to the early parade. We waited until the 10:00 parade and the crowds were less. We all agreed (there were 9 of us) that the fireworks were the BEST we have ever seen! Planning on going back next year.

  18. Thanks for the great photos, videos and descriptions. We are sad we will not be at WDW until Dec 22-29th so we will miss the MVMCP. Do you know what special events will continue from the MVMCP or be added for Christmas week? Thanks again!

    Jack’s Answer:

To my knowledge, the Christmas fireworks and parade and the three shows, “Celebrate the Season,” “A Totally Tomorrowland Christmas Show,” and “Belle’s Enchanted Christmas” will all be shown the week of Christmas. However, I don’t believe the “Dance Parties” still run and of course, there are no free cookies and hot chocolate.

One word of warning. You have picked the busiest week of the year to visit Walt Disney World. The parks regularly close due to capacity around 10am-11am each day. I strongly advise you arrive at opening (9am) and bring your patience and a sense of humor.

  19. Jack;

Other than missing an opportunity of bumping into Kelly Rippa, I am glad to hear that the filming of the Christmas Parade will take place after our vacation. I have been trying to find that information for a while now, and you have finally provided.

We look forward to our MVMCP on the 1st and wish the entire Disney family (all 1 billion of us) a happy holiday season.

    Bob

  20. We went to MVMCP on Thursday the 12th and this was our 4th party. Every year we book our vacation specifically around MVMCP so that we can attend. I thought this year was just as spectacular and well worth the cost of an extra ticket as it has been in the past. My only disappointment was not having the Galaxy Theater’s Night Before Christmas Show. Every year that is the first show we go to and while the Buzz lightyear one was nice, it was no where as good as the Night Before Christmas Show. I hope they bring it back! I will compliment Disney in having more locations for hot chocolate and cookies. A side note if you are a diabetic like me, on request, they do have sugar free hot chocolate and sugar free cookies available BUT you have to ask. They are usually in the back and it will take a few minutes for the cast member to get these for you. I am certainly greatful to Disney to have these items for diabetics so that we too can enjoy all the festivities which include hot chocolate and cookies. Finally, I must say that the castle looked so beautiful and this whole night always puts my entire family in the Christmas spirit. My boys are 17 and 27 and yet every year still come with us, from Massachusetts. I hope they continue this tradition when they have children.

  21. Hey-thanks for the pics! We are going to MVMCP on Dec 3. Question- we went for the Halloween party and was thrilled to see Cinderella’s carriage on display for pictures. Did they have it on display for Christmas?

    Jack’s Answer:

At Halloween, Cinderella’s coach was on display at the base of the Fantasyland Skyway terminal. It was not there for MVMCP and I did not see it anyplace else.

  22. Does Disney leave up the holiday decorations through New Years day? Won’t be there till NYE and would hate to miss it all osbornes etc.. 🙁

    Jack’s Answer:

Don’t worry. You’ll get to see the Christmas decorations. Disney usually leaves everything up for a day or two after New Years.

  23. Wonderful write-up, Jack! Quick question…are Raggedy Ann & Andy still part of the “Celebrate the Season” show and in the parade? They have been there every year since 2003 – at least that long since that was my first year at MVMCP – but I do not see them in any of your photos. Odd question, I know! 🙂 Thanks!

    Jack’s Answer:

I did edit the video of the parade slightly, but I did not see Raggedy Ann and Andy. It had rained earlier if the evening so it’s possible that’s why they weren’t in attendance. But I suspect Disney is tweaking the parade slightly each year and it was the cloth-dolls turn to be omitted.

  24. Jack,

Great descriptions and pictures as always!

I noticed from your video that the characters (i.e., Mickey and friends) in the Castle Lighting Ceremony blink and move their mouths as they are speaking. Is this a new development for this stage show?

    Jack’s Answer:

About two years ago, several of the major characters obtained the ability to blink and move their mouths. At the moment, this is only for the stage shows so if you meet Mickey in person, this would not be the case. I really like this new feature. It adds some realism to the characters.

  25. Where did you get the picture with Belle & The Beast taken?

    Jack’s Answer:

There is a Christmas photo-op location at the base of the old Skyway terminal in Fantasyland. That’s where I found Belle and Beast.

  26. Jack, thanks for the wonderful report. Could you elaborate on the Totally Tomorrowland Christmas Show? Is this the one the replaced Mickey’s Twas the Night before Christmas? Where is it presented and how long is it? My girl’s are 11 and 8, do you think they would prefer it to the Celebrate the Season Show which I’m guessing is more traditional. Should I see both?

    Jack’s Answer:

To say the “Totally Tomorrowland Christmas Show” replaced “Mickey’s Twas the night Before Christmas” would be a misnomer. Disney completely razed the large theater in Tomorrowland and built a much smaller venue between the Carousel of Progress and Space Mountain. Also, the new theater has no seats. Any show presented on the new Rockettower Plaza Stage is a much smaller production than in years past. The show stars Buzz Lightyear, Mike Wazowski, and Stitch.

That being said, I really liked the “Totally Tomorrowland Christmas Show.” It’s not traditional, but it’s fun. Although both sexes would definitely enjoy this show, I think it has a broader appeal for boys than girls. The show is 15 minutes in length, about the same as the Castle Forecourt “Celebrate the Season” show.

In my opinion, you should see both. But I think girls would enjoy the castle show more than the Tomorrowland Show — but you know your kids better than me.

    Have a great time.

  27. Thanks for another great blog Jack. We will be going to the party on Dec. 15. This will be our 10th year of doing the party so we are really excited again.

  28. The video brought back memories, but as one member wrote the dancers were not on rollerblades, nor did I notice any horse pulling Donald & Daisy or the 6 white miniature horses with Cinderellas coach. Did they also cut back on the wooden soldiers? I didn’t notice any band members and it sure didn’t look like 32 were there. I’m going the 6th and hope I won’t be disappointed as those were my favorites! I know you couldn’t get it ALL in there, but you did capture as much as you could.

    Jack’s Answer:

I really don’t know what may have been cut from this year’s parade. But I can tell you the Wooden Soldiers were there in full force. I only showed the second brigade in my video. The instrument-playing soldiers were marching ahead of the portion I included.

  29. Jack —

I was there on the 10th when Ida hit and we got rained out for the most part. We were told on the Magical Express back to the airport the next day that people were exchanging tickets for another party within the year. Any ideas of how to go about this? I am not sure if it’s too late, once you leave the park – but I wasn’t aware of it there.

    Jack’s Answer:

Disney is giving rain-checks to guests who attended MVMCP on November 10th (like me). On November 12th, I took my original ticket (the receipt would work too) to Guest Relations and they gladly gave me a ticket for that night.

I do not know how long this offer is good and I don’t know if you can do this by mail (or phone). All I can suggest is calling Disney’s General Information Line at 407-824-4321 and ask.

  30. Jack, my family always enjoys your blogs. I haven been waiting years to get back to disney for christmas! Watching your video of the tree lighting brought tears to my eyes. My family has visited the world 3 times over the past 2 years, most recently during the halloween party. Next year we will be going back for the christmas party and I canmt wait. Your blog has made me even more excited!

  31. Jack,

You mentioned Special $29.95 Holiday Photo Packages…do you have any details? This is the first I have heard of these packages.

    Thanks!

    Jack’s Answer:

To be honest, I don’t know what the Holiday Photo Package contains. For more information about PhotoPass and the various products offered, check out this website:

    http://www.disneyphotopass.com/

  32. We were there on 11/12 and it was wonderful except for being very soggy. The first parade was delayed and I don’t think that it ever did get under way.

    Jack’s Answer:

I too was at MVMCP on the twelfth. It was wet. However, the second parade did go on as scheduled at 10:30. My video was shot then.

The party was so soggy that Disney will give rain checks to guests who have their party ticket or receipt. I returned on the 14th in this manner.

  33. I noticed that there were no “Roller Skating Snowflakes” in the parade this year! Was this a safety issue because of the wet streets or did they change it all together?

    Jack’s Answer:

To be honest, I don’t have an answer for you. But I suspect that the parade has just been changed slightly as it always is from year to year. There certainly weren’t any “dead” or “empty” spots in the parade as it passed by. And by the time the 10:30 parade took place, the streets were dry enough that I doubt that safety was an issue.

  34. What extra do you get with the MMVMCP. Do you get a meal, or just treats and hot chocolate. It seems to be alot of money for just a parade, and a dance party.

    Jack’s Answer:

Here’s what you get at the party that you don’t get during the day:

    A special Christmas parade

    Three special Christmas shows

“Free” cookies, hot chocolate and apple juice

    Christmas Meet & Greets

Christmas Fireworks Snow on Main Street

However, if you attend the Magic Kingdom during the day — non party:

You get a parade — it’s just not Christmas themed

You get a Castle Forecourt show, Storybook Time with Belle, and Tiana’s Riverboat Jubilee — they’re just not Christmas themed

Meet & Greets — just not Christmas themed

And if you go to the Magic Kingdom on a day when a MVMCP isn’t taking place, you get to see the regular Wishes Fireworks show at night.

The Magic Kingdom is decorated for Christmas all day long. VERY little is added in the evening for the party.

And if you go to the Magic Kingdom after December 18th, you get all of the Christmas activities listed above.

So the question you have to ask yourself, is it worth $50+ per person to get a Christmas spin on everything?

  35. Me any my best friend will be attending the 11/29 party. What is the 29.99 holiday photo package that you mentioned in the photopass??

    Jack’s Answer:

To be honest, I don’t know what the Holiday Photo Package contains. For more information about PhotoPass and the various products offered, check out this website:

  36. Our tickets for MVMCP are for Dec 13. I know that it starts at 7PM but if we arrive after that time will we be able to get in the park?

    Jack’s Answer:

You have nothing to worry about. You can gain entrance into the park up until about 30 minutes before they close. But since the party only lasts for five hours and there are a number of shows and events to see, it’s in your best interest to arrive as early as possible.

  37. We are heading to WDW in a couple weeks. A couple years ago, we attended Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween, and were a bit disappointed about the crowds. Is MMVCP the same, or since it is the slower season, are the crowds not that bad?

    Jack’s Answer:

This is a difficult question to answer. You are correct that September and October are busier times at Walt Disney World than the first two weeks of December. But many residents of Central Florida attend the Halloween and Christmas parties so there isn’t a direct correlation between Disney World attendance and Party attendance.

This I can tell you. The closer you get to Halloween and Christmas, the busier the parties get.

  38. I closed my eyes as I passed through the pics! We attend MMVCP on 12-4…didnt want to spoil it…just wanted the times! We are excited!

  39. We will be in Disney Nov. 21-25 but were dissapointed to learn they would not be having the MVMCP during our visit. If that’s one on the busiest weeks of the year, why not have the party at least once that week??? Either way, we are very excited about taking our daughter back to the “Happiest Place on Earth”. Thanks for all the information your site provides.

    Jack’s Answer:

You are right that Thanksgiving week is one of the busiest weeks of the year at Walt Disney World. And that’s exactly why they don’t have a party during this time. The parties were created to generate extra revenue during slower times of the year. And if Disney “closed” the Magic Kingdom for a party, even for one night during this busy week, guests would complain like you wouldn’t believe.

But Walt Disney World will be completely decorated during your visit and there will be plenty of holiday spirit to enjoy.

  40. Hi Jack – Great photos. This is our first Christmas trip to Disney and we are getting very excited. We are not attending the MVMCP, but currently are planning on spending 12/8/09 at the Magic Kingdom and then we have 8:00 reservations at California Grill. Is MVMCP going to greatly effect the crowds at Magic Kingdom that day, shoud we instead go to Epcot that day? I based my schedule on the touringplans.com recommendations. Thanks for your help.

    Jack’s Answer:

MVMCP will not have a big impact on the Magic Kingdom. Yes, some people will spend all day there, but most of the party goers won’t arrive until 4pm and after.

  41. Great pics. I will be there on Nov 19 as part of the Earmark convention for travel agents. It will be my first trip to the party and during the holiday season. I am so excited and your pics made it even more reaal for me. Thanks and Have a Magical Holiday Season

  42. We went to the Party last night and enjoyed the short lines at a few of the rides and then went to see the shows. We hit rides until the 845 Tomorrowland Christmas Show, then we found a prime spot just on the Tomorrowland side to park the stroller to see the fireworks @ 930 and 1005 Celebrate the Season on the Castle foredourt stage and then had great seats for the very long and excellent Parade at 1030. Seeing all these prime things did not leave us much time to see the other things around the Magic Kingdom though we are glad to have seen the main shows. Fireworks were good though I must say I prefer the Hallo-Wishes myself. Very bothered that people leaving that were not Holiday Pass holders were making the Photo Pass lines extermely long. Great evening wonderful atmospher the new show in Tomorrowland was a hit with my kids!!

  43. Hey Jack , I will be going Dc 9th thru the 12th
will MVMCP be crowded ? Also the christmas lighting at the castle will be at 6:30 what time will the let us in for the party?

    Jack’s Answer:

Disney does not divulge attendance information. Usually, Disney World has manageable crowds up until around the 18th, then it becomes a nightmare. As for MVMCP, the closer you get to the last party (the 18th), the busier they get. I would guess that the dates you gave me will be busy, but tolerable. But that’s strictly a guess on my part.

MVMCP officially opens at 7pm, but Disney allows ticketed guest to enter the Magic Kingdom as early as 4pm so you can see the Castle Lighting Ceremony.

  44. Hi Jack,
Thanks for the reviews of MVMCP! We have never been to WDW during the holiday season, and will be there Dec.6-11. We have our MVMCP tickets and all our ADR. However, we have a ADR at Tony’s for 7:45, and your information states that the last seating is 7:30.Is this possible??
    Thanks!

    Jack’s Answer:

If Disney confirmed your reservation for 7:45, then you have a reservation for 7:45. Don’t worry about it. I took those times off of an early release and it’s possible things have been revised.

  45. Jack, Thanks so much for all the pictures of MVMCP was up in the air about going but after showing Hubby the pictures I called that night and bought our tickets for Dec 8th. Can not wait to go. Thank you again You make Disney more magical and exciting

  46. Jack.

We went to the Halloween party two years ago and we are visiting Diney in December. Problem is for a family of six, this is another $300… Is it worth the additional funds?

    Jack’s Answer:

Here’s what you get at the party that you don’t get during the day:

    A special Christmas parade
    Three special Christmas shows
“Free” cookies, hot chocolate and apple juice
    Christmas Meet & Greets
    Christmas Fireworks
    Snow on Main Street

However, if you attend during the day — non party:

You get a parade — it’s just not Christmas themed
You get a Castle Forecourt show, Storybook Time with Belle, and Tiana’s Riverboat Jubilee — they’re just not Christmas themed
Meet & Greets — just not Christmas themed
And if you go to the Magic Kingdom on a day when a MVMCP isn’t taking place, you get to see the regular Wishes Fireworks show at night.

The Magic Kingdom is decorated for Christmas all day long. VERY little is added in the evening for the party.

So the question you have to ask yourself, is it worth $50+ per person to get a Christmas spin on everything? Many people think so, but this is a very subjective question.

  47. 2 weeks to go for us until we land in Orlando. It’s all I can think about now that it’s so close. We’ll be at MVMCP on 12/1. Weather has been quite nice lately in Orlando so let’s hope it keeps up. Thanks for the images and video. It was awesome.

  48. You mentioned the special MVMCP Photopass. I always get a regular photopass and I have already pre-purchased the photo CD. Can this special photopass be added to my CD or is this something I have to purchase separately?

    Jack’s Answer:

If you already have a regular PhotoPass when you arrive at the party, just continue using it. You will still get the 40% discount on 5×7 Christmas pictures if you purchase them that night or online once you get home.

  49. Love the information. Great job. But I’m a little discouraged now that I have learned that filming day (Dec. 6) is the day we have our tickets. What other advice can you give me to make the night as enjoyable as possible? Are there areas to definitely avoid? We’re still extremely excited, just looking for some good ‘insider’ tips!

    Keep up the great work!
    Aaron

    Jack’s Answer:

I avoid the Magic Kingdom on this day, so my answer is subject to flaws. However, I usually watch the Disney TV show on Christmas morning and if memory serves, most of the shots were filmed in the daytime. If this is the case, you should feel very little impact once the party begins.

  50. Thanks so much for the update and the great pictures. It looks totally awesome. My family is so excited! We can’t wait for our trip next week. This will be our first!

I was curious as to where Chritmas Mickey and Donald’s Tree Lot are located. One of my main goals is to take pics with these 2.

    Thanks for the incredible update!

    Jack’s Answer:

The night I attended MVMCP, it rained for the first three hours of the event. When it rains, the characters go to indoor locations or even backstage. Because of this, I did not get to see all the characters and their locations.

I did not see Mickey at all, but I’m sure he was available someplace. Just stop by City Hall when you arrive and ask.

Donald’s Christmas Tree Farm is located just to the right of Pooh’s Playful Spot.

  51. I love the pictures. Thanks so much for putting them up, it was as if I was there! Wait I will be there on dec 2 – 8. I can’t wait! Although this year we aren’t going to be doing the party, my daughter is only 15 months, and the party is alittle late for her. We have done this in the past years. I think next year will be good for us.

  52. We’re going on 12/17 for my 40th bday and our 1st MVMCP. I’m guessing crowds will be at peak by then. Do you have a suggestion about what order to do all of the scheduled activities?
Thanks for your info & merry Christmas!

    Jack’s Answer:

You’re right. The party you’re attending will be busy as it is so close to Christmas.

If you can, arrive at 4pm. This will maximize your touring time. From 4-7, go on the rides that will be closed during the party, like the Jungle Cruise and Steam Train.

See the second parade. During the first parade, go on the rides. See the later shows. I went to the party again last night. I arrived at the first “Celebrate the Season” show in front of the castle 35 minutes before it started. The crowd was already unmanageable.

    I hope this helps.

  53. Hi Jack!

Beautiful photos! Thank you so much.I’ll be there in December!
Please, Castle Lighting Ceremony happens every nights or only in Parties nights?

    Jack’s Answer:

The Castle Lighting Ceremony is presented every night a 6:30pm. Even on MVMCP nights, this show is available to everyone.

  54. I wish I could celebrate Christmas like this. I’ve never been to Disney land but I really want to visit my dream location. I’m amazed to see the Christmas celebration there, they invest huge amount of money to celebrate Christmas. Me and my friends celebrate Christmas in a very simple manner by organizing a party and our party is really small as compared to this party. But I like the theme of their party the idea they’ve been using.

  55. Great pictures and videos Jack. We’re going over for my free Birthday entrance on December 30th. Will they have this same parade then during the day. I heard that after Dec 19th that you can see it with regular entrance. Is that true? I sure hope so, it’s been several years since we did the MVMCP. Do they get to compacity even on the 30th? I know they do on the 31st. Thanks Jack..as usual..you are the greatest. Keep up the great work. We all Love it and can’t wait to read everything you write. Thanks – Carolee

    Jack’s Answer:

I’m not sure of the date, but starting sometime around 19th, the Christmas Parade (that was only available for MVMCP) is shown to everyday to everyone.

The Magic Kingdom reaches capacity almost daily from December 24 – 31. I strongly suggest you arrive before 10am (unless you’re staying at a Disney hotel) to guarantee admittance.

  56. Thanks for the great information! My husband and I have been planning our trip since we were there last year at this time. We’ll be attending on 12/1 and I’m so excited to have the show times so I can plan out our night. I saw where you said that there was no seating for the show in Tomorrowland. How early would you recommend getting a spot for that show? We will probably be seeing the 7:45 show.

    Jack’s Answer:

The “A Totally Tomorrowland Christmas Show” isn’t nearly as popular as the “Celebrate the Season” show. I would suggest arriving 15, maybe 20 minutes before the show. If you have small children, then make it 20 minutes. There are mats on the ground in front of the stage for kids (and adults) to sit on, but only the early arrivals get a spot.

  57. We LOVE Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas! I suggest to anyone going for the first time, dress the family (or at least the children), in coordinating Christmas colors. This is a GREAT opportunity to get a photo for the Christmas card.

  58. Jack –

Thanks for the great info! I’ll be there in 3 weeks and was wondering how you got such great pics at night – special camera, tripod, etc. I went last year and was disappointed to find that I couldn’t capture the beauty with my still camera. Any suggestions?

    Jack’s Answer:

I have an expensive camera, but no idea how to use it properly. I take dozens, maybe hundreds of shots. I only post the best ones. But for nighttime pictures, I turn up the ISO to maximum. However, my pictures look grainy when I do this — but once I shrink them for the website, you don’t notice.

Your best bet is to send an email to one of our photography bloggers and ask them for suggestions on how to take nighttime pictures.

  59. We are going to the Christmas party for the first time on 12/8 and I was already anxious before seeing your post, but now I am even more excited. This Disney trip is a surprise for our 4 year old DD. The party is an “extra-special” surprise. She is going to love the dance parties and the snow on Main Street. I didn’t watch the video as I would like that to be a surprise myself. I would like to thank you for all the times for everything. I am a huge planner and this is great that I can somewhat plan ahead of time! Thanks! Awesome post!

  60. Looks very cute and like a lot of fun. Great pictures! But where’s the snow?

    Jack’s Answer:

It snows on Main Street, but this is difficult to capture in a photograph. (The snow is actually soap bubbles.)

  61. These pictures aren’t from this year are they? I was just at the park on Monday and didn’t notice too many decorations yet.

    Jack’s Answer:

I took all of these pictures either last Friday or Tuesday. So yes, they are all current pictures.

  62. Thank you so much for the info. I am attending 12/1 & now cannot wait. I am excited as I was as a child waiting for Christmas Eve. Anyway, it is nice to see the bracelets are nicer than 2yrs ago. They looked more like Halloween than Christmas (they were orange). Your photos are beautiful! I was planning to relax during the day & head to the park at 3 but I think I will go early & stay until midnight & relax at park. I want to see it all & cannot wait! Thanks again for showing me what to expect. It helps to figure out my game plan in advance. I plan to print out the party map & look it over on the 2.5hr plane ride.

By the way, can you direct in detail where to stand by the castle for best view of tinkerbell & Holiday Wishes? How soon should I find a spot?

    Thank you again

    Jack’s Answer:

If people are willing to slow down, there are numerous places to slow down and relax in the Magic Kingdom. Take a ride on the PeopleMover (TTA). Or sit in the rocking chairs in front of Exhibition Hall.

As for the fireworks, I think anyplace in the Hub area is okay. I usually don’t even show up until about 10-15 minutes before the show. I can usually find an spot that works well. Now if you want to see the “Celebrate the Season” show that plays on the castle stage, you should be there at least 20 minutes early and get a spot between the street and the stage.

  63. Dear Jack!
As a self proclaimed Disney freak for years and years (our whole family is but I think I am the extremist…lol!) I must say this just made me feel like I was right there watching in the crowd! The last time we were there was 2 years ago and at a time when we can’t afford to go this year, your blogs make it possible to still ‘be there’…thank you is really not sufficient for what you do to share the magic. The castle lighting for me was the best part…tears streaming down my face as it slowly lit up…it truly is the most magical & happiest place on earth!! Next year will definitely be our next trip back to the World…can’t wait! And in the meantime, keep up the amazing job you do!!

    Michelle in Alberta, Canada

  64. I am counting the days until we are at Disney enjoying all they have to offer for Christmas. I booked our trip early in the year and have been wishing my whole year away waiting for that day to come. We will be attending MVMCP on the 13th of December. My son is going to be so excited!!!!!!! Yeah, his dad and I, too. Again, can’t wait!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for the wonderful pictures and info.!!

  65. Do you know the times of the Tomorrowland show? Those were the only ones not listed. Thanks.

    Jack’s Answer:

According to the guide map Disney passed out, the “A Tottaly Tomorrowland Christmas Show” is presented at 7:45, 8:45, 9:30, 10:45, and 11:45.

  66. I figured you’d be out for this party, and was looking forward to hearing your report. I was at Very Merry last year and thought it was wonderful. Love the World around the holidays!

I won’t make it down for a party this year, but I will be one of the millions clogging up the place between Christmas and New Years (not my fault! I’m tacking a few solo days on to a family vacation elsewhere in Florida). I know the Christmas parade is shown during the day at that time, but any idea if any of the shows or other entertainment happen then?

  67. Dear Jack,

Thank you, thank you, thank you for the best coverage I´ve seen of the X-mas party to date. We will arrive Dec. 16 and was wondering if it was worth paying the additional ticket to enter the party. The thing is, I’ve read about a lot of people complaining that they do not empty the park of regular guests before the party starts and that a lot of people stay for parades and fireworks thus making crowds impossible.

May I have your point of view on this?

    Thak you again !!!

    Jack’s Answer:

Disney does their best to empty the park of “day guests,” however, many people stake out a place on Main Street at 7pm who do not belong there. This is a difficult situation for Disney to handle and there is no easy answer. Usually after the first parade, most of the unauthorized day guests leave.

Disney does rope off each of the lands at 7pm and forces the “day guests” to leave these areas. So for the most part, the rides are available only to party goers.

I have never encountered “impossible” crowds at one of these parties.

Is it with worth the money to attend one of these parties? I don’t know. The answer is too subjective.

    Good luck with your decision.

    Eugenia.

  68. Just WOW!!! I can’t wait to be there in Christmas…this blog is so special!!!

Of all this things besides the parade, the fireworks and the decorations…what else remain untill December 25??

I visited the World a few years ago during the Holiday season, but it was to crowded that I never actually confirm if there was holidays treats in those days (I remember that I went to MK on December 25 and December 30…)

  69. My family and I will be attending the party Tuesday, Nov. 17. I can’t wait! Last I heard Space Mountain was supposed to open on the 21st. I don’t know if that is accurate or not. I’m secretly hoping for a “soft opening” befpre that. Have you heard anything? Anyway, thank you for all the information on this party. Perfect timing!

    Maria

    Jack’s Answer:

Last I heard, Space Mountain is schedule to open on November 22. However, Disney usually has soft openings before the announced date. But they rarely announce soft openings in advance and you can’t count on them. Also, Disney might only open the attraction for a couple of hours then close it again.

It’s possible you might get to ride, but there is no way of telling at the moment. Keep your fingers crossed.

  70. Love the pictures and all the info. This will be out first Mickey’s Christmas party (Dec. 6) and I think I’m the most excited in the house!!! Speaking of the filming for the Christmas day Parade, if we are there on a party night they are filming, would you discourage that???? I’ve heard from a cast member it may be Dec. 6… What are your thoughts.. Thanks for all your articles.

    Jack’s Answer:

Most of the time, Disney films the Christmas Parade during the day, not on party nights. However, they may film some of the shows in the evening.

I usually discourage going to the Magic Kingdom on the days they film. The parade may start and stop a number of times so the camera can get a good shot. Also, the filming crews and crowds can interfere with your enjoyment.

  71. Thanks for the great pictures, etc. I know that I speak for a multitude of other readers and Disney “Freaks” when I say…Thanks for all of your hard work…keeping us informed. We leave tomorrow from San Antonio, Tx and will be at MVMCP on Tuesday night the 17th.
    Merry Christmas!!!!
    Jerry

  72. I saw you got a picture of woody and bullseye. May I ask where was the character location? My son loves bullseye. Thanks

    Jack’s Answer:

Woody and Bullseye were located inside the Diamond Horseshoe Theater. However, it was raining that evening and many of the character locations were brought indoors. But I know they are often seen outside this venue as well.

  73. We were there on the 10th and had a lot of fun, in spite of the rain! My daughter got a sheriff’s badge at Pecos Bill right as we finished dinner at 7pm.

We did find out that since they had to cancel the first parade due to the rain, we could exchange our tickets/wrist bands at City Hall for another night. We’ll be going back on the 12th.

  74. Thank you for the great photos & helpful information. I especially like the Mickey’s Christmas Carol shots; can you please tell us where those windows are? Thanks!

    Jack’s Answer:

All of the window shots were taken outside of the Emporium. The “moving” picture is a collection of windows featuring “Mickey’s A Christmas Carol.”

  75. We will be at the last night on the 18th Dec – and i am so excited and seeing your photos is making me even more so! Have never been to Disney for Christmas before, and we are really looking forward to it.

  76. WOW! Wish we were going to be there this year, but unfortunately can’t make the trip. We will be visiting next year at this time, however. Thanks for letting us live vicariously through you this time! This may be a little early, but Merry Christmas, Jack!

  77. Fantastic pictures and videos! I hope to go with my family sometime in the next few years, this just made me want to book it sooner than later. Looks like such a fun time you all had!
    Thanks for posting!

  78. Thanks for all the posts, photos and Videos guys…leave it to ALLEARS to get the newest party lowdown to us ASAP…

We’re headed down for a very merry “engagement” at the beginning of December…and our first time ever at WDW for Christmas time…I was excited BEFORE I saw all the photos and stuff…now I’m bursting with Mickey Christmas Mania…Love ya Allears!!

Not to mention the Return of Space Mountain!!

I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas!!

  79. What happened to the Night Before Christmas show that was in the Tomorrowland galaxy theater?

    Jack’s Answer:

For reasons only known to Disney, they razed the Galaxy Stage and now it’s a backstage parking lot. They built a new, much smaller stage in-between the TTA and the Tomorrowland restrooms. It’s a nice stage, but there is no seating — something they have received numerous complaints about.

However, I would recommend the “A Totally Tomorrowland Christmas Show.” It is very clever and a lot of fun.

  80. We were at the December 10th opening night and it was great. Being from Seattle, the three hours of pounding rain made us feel at home and we got a great view of the fireworks show over by the Walt Disney statue.

I love your blog, e-mail if you want a link to mine 🙂

  81. Was the giant Christmas tree up? A friend of mine went last year and was disappointed and said it wasn’t up…

    Jack’s Answer:

As you might know, Disney presents a Christmas Day Parade on the morning of December 25th each year. Even though they pretend this event is “live” it is actually filmed in Early December. Much of the filming takes place from the Plaza on Main Street — right where the Christmas tree sits. So Disney does not put up the tree until after the filming is complete.

At one time, they set the tree up temporarily in the Rose Garden and moved it to the Plaza after filming. But a couple of years ago it was decided that this was too expensive so Disney just waits until after the shoot.

  82. Did all this still go on last night i was there but the rain was so bad i left at 9:30 and did’nt get to see nothing? what time did everything start up again? Thanks

  83. Hi Jack-

Thanks for the great review! We are planning on catching MVMCP on Friday, December 11. Do you think we need to purchase the tickets in advance or can we wait until we arrive?

    Thanks again!

  84. Gets me all pumped to go!! Went in 2007 and will be attending December 8th this year. Looking forward to the new Tomorow land show. New folks should definately hit the rides during the first parade and watch the second. Works for this party as well as the Halloween party. To the folks going on the 8th-see ya there!!

  85. The one thing I was saddened to hear is the Night before Christmas Show was cancelled for this year. Any reason why other then they made the stage to the right of the carousel of Progress a parking lot. My family and I really enjoyed the show. hopefully next year.

    Thank you for the pics.

    Shea

  86. I loved reading this blog. We are sitting in our hotel in Dallas. We are flying out in the morning and will be attending the party tomorrow night. It was nice to see photos and read all about the party.
    Teresa

  87. Jack:

This is great! I will be going on the last day (December 18). I can’t wait. The new show on Tomorrowland seems really good. Do they presented more than once and if so, at what times?

Thank you for all that you do.

  88. Wow, I can’t wait to see it. I am going this Sunday evening with hubby, son, his wife & two little girls. My daughter & her gang went on Nov 10th & even in the rain had a blast.

    Thanks for the photos!

    Cindy

  89. Jack,

Fantastic blog (yet again)! We will be attending MVMCP for the first time on December 10, and were wondering about it “snowing” on Main Street. Does this occur during the parades or some other set time(s)?

    Thanks and Merry Christmas!

    Jack’s Answer:

I watched the parade from the end of Main Street — near the Fire Station. It was not snowing in this location during the procession. But I can’t give you a definitive answer as to the rest of the street. Sorry. However, later that evening, the snow was definitely falling all along the thoroughfare.

  90. I have been checking your blog several times today hoping that you would have gone to the Christmas party yesterday. I figured if you went to the first Halloween party you would go to the first Christmas party as well. We have gone several times in the last few years to WDW but this is our first time ever going for the Christmas season. WE CAN’T WAIT!! You’ve made the anticipation turn into excitement. Thanks a bunch!!

On a side note, the week we are there we have the choice between going on Tuesday or Thursday. If we go Tuesday that would be the very first time we experience MK. If we choose Thursday it will probably be the second or third time we go to MK during that week. Do you have any opinion on what we should do?

    Jack’s Answer:

I’m guessing you’re purchasing some sort of general admission to the Disney World parks. If this is true, you can go to the Magic Kingdom during the day on Tuesday and then just stay through the party (with your separate party ticket). But here’s what I think you should do. Go to the Thursday MVMCP and experience the Magic Kingdom on another day beforehand. That way, come Thursday, you can concentrate your efforts on the shows an parades and you would be as concerned about riding on all the attractions. Of course, you’ll want to re-experience some of the rides that night.

  91. Jack, I am so excited! We (my family and I)are attending MVMCP on November 20th. Your photos and video really put me in the holiday spirit and I can’t wait to attend this event. It will be our first Christmas party at WDW. I have high hopes and I know I won’t be disappointed. Thanks for the wonderful photos and video. It really helps to get into the spirit of the holidays, and what a GREAT place to start them off in…

  92. We go the MVMCP in 4 days……let me tell you how temping it was to watch this video! But I skipped it so the first time I see it will be at the party itself! Thanks for all the information about the party so we can experience as much as possible when we are there. Great as always!

    Thanks for sharing!!

  93. Jack,

Great pictures – I will have to check out the video when I get home, but I am sure that it is great as well. This brings back memories of our trip last year, it also makes me want to go back. Okay, no real encouragement needed there.

    Thanks for sharing!!
