Tips for Disney Parks & Cruise Lines

We are traveling with my 2-1/2 year-old granddaughter early next year. I have witnessed, as well as heard from others about the "Fear Factor" getting the tots close to the characters can cause. Since she watches Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, she only has that and her stuffed animals for size reference. So, I have been telling her about how Mickey is big like Mom and Dad. Then one day I spotted some sing-along DVDs Disney has for sale through their movie club: SingAlong Songs at Walt Disney World: Beach Party and Campout. They show kids around 10 years old interacting with full-size characters in a variety of settings and activities to go with the DVD title, singing songs together with the words dubbed below. She LOVES these DVDs! Fort Wilderness and Bay Lake (and the former Discovery Island) are featured on CAMPOUT. Typhoon Lagoon, Blizzard Beach and other beaches in the "World" are the settings for BEACH PARTY. Hopefully, these perspective videos will help her deal with the surprise size of the characters she meets!

I wanted to add a tip for parents after reading your Survival Guide for Parents (in last week's AllEars® Issue #572). We took foam earplugs for our daughters to use when watching the fireworks at night. Neither of our daughters, ages 6 and 10, like loud noises (especially fireworks), and the earplugs allowed us to watch the fireworks up close without the girls being upset by the loud noises. You squish the foam to make it small, insert it into the ear, and then it expands to have a custom fit. Well worth being able to enjoy the fireworks or other loud attractions without tears and fears. - Jennifer Danczyk

I wanted to add a suggestion to Marjorie Degnan's entry about Disney gift cards. On our last trip in February, we stayed at Shades of Green. Guests of Shades are not able to charge anything on Disney property to their room. Knowing this beforehand, we put all of our food budget on a Disney gift card (we chose Ratatouille). Then we each picked a card and put each person's shopping money on their individual gift cards. After each purchase and/or meal, your remaining gift card balance is printed on the receipt. It worked out so well! We are going again in December and will do the same! The bonus is, if you overestimate your food money then you have the remainder to shop more on the last day or put it aside for the next trip(s)! Polynesian - We recently returned from a six-night stay at the Polynesian. We stayed in the Tokelau House and found that walking to the Transportation and Ticket Center when going to Epcot was a timesaver versus taking the Resort Monorail through the Grand Floridian, Magic Kingdom then to the Transportation and Ticket Center. - Lori C.

I was getting ready for my trip and remembered that I had Disney Visa Rewards points. I checked online to order my points, but realized my old card was expired. I needed to order a new card, so I called up Disney Visa and they told me that it would take 7 to 10 days for the card to arrive -- but not to worry. The customer service rep told me because I was going down to Walt Disney World, all I had to do was go to Guest Relations in any of the theme parks or Disney Springs, where I could pick up a card. All I then had to do was call the number on the back of the card, and my rewards points would be transferred. This was good news to me, because I didn't have to waste $10 to pay for "rush" mail service to get a new card to me before the trip. - Tim N.

Every day, several cell phones are lost at Walt Disney World. When a phone is lost, you not only lose communications, you also lose the important phone numbers stored in them. Though the wireless companies encourage you to donate your old phones when you upgrade, I suggest that you hang onto one and its charger as a spare and toss them into your suitcase when you pack. Odds are that you'll never need to use it, but should the worst happen while you're visiting the Mouse, you might be able to switch your phone number to the old phone by contacting your carrier. In a couple minutes, you have a working phone again. If you subscribe to some kind of "Backup Assistant", you might also be able to download your contacts to the spare phone. (Note that only someone who is authorized on the account and knows the password can make that change.) It may not be the shiny new Blackberry that you just got, but that old Motorola Razr is better than no phone for that week. - Mike J.

Free Dining is sometimes offered with a resort package. My trip dates didn't include all of the free dining dates. I called Disney reservations to ask how I could take advantage of the free dining that is being offered and got a wonderful agent who checked into it for me. When she came back on the line, she had booked my trip for free dining for all 10 days. My tip is even if your dates are only partially covered, CALL! You may be able to get the whole trip included. It definitely made for a magical day in my house. - Stefanie

My 5-year-old daughter has a beautiful pin collection but no real good way to display them on the lanyards. I purchased a long corkboard at my local craft store and 1 yard of material to cover it in. I then purchased Disney Princess scrap book cut outs to accent the material. Lastly, I displayed all of the pins on the cork board using the cut outs as backgrounds for the princess pins. If it starts raining in Disney Springs, and you don't have a poncho, some of the non-Disney-owned stores may have cheaper ones. We got two clear plastic ponchos for around $2 each at the Raglan Road gift shop, when the other stores were selling Disney-branded ponchos for $7 each. - Amanda Porter

I just returned from WDW and found a great place on the Disney bus route to get water without having to take a city bus to Goodings. The Hess Mart across from Disney Springs West Side (Planet Hollywood) sells 24 17-oz. bottles of water for $4.99 (as well as other beverages). Take the DTD bus to the West Side stop and walk across the street to the Hess Mart. The DTD buses only stop at the West Side starting at 11 a.m. (which was something I didn't know). Thanks to the bellman at Saratoga Springs for the tip about the water. - pnazareth1

I just returned from nine days in Disney with two grandsons, aged 14 & 11. Before I left I went to the local Disney store and purchased Disney gift cards for them to use for their spending money. They were very responsible in their purchases and "the bank of Grammy" did not have to keep giving money. They understood that when the dollars were gone, their spending was over. OK, Grammy did buy them a few things; how could I refuse? But the Disney gift cards were a great idea. - Marjorie Degnan

Restaurant.com currently has several restaurants at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin hotels in their system, as well as House of Blues. Garden Grove, Shula's Steakhouse, Kimonos, Il Mulino New York Trattoria, and Todd English's bluezoo are all in there. You can get a $25 gift certificate for $10 (less if you search for a current promo code) and the certificates never expire. Make sure to read the restrictions on minimum purchase and days of the week they are valid, but overall these are a great deal! We use them at home all the time -- glad to know we can use them on vacation, too! - Tracy Roth
