Tips for Disney Parks & Cruise Lines

My tip is for the trading pins. We always have problems with the backs falling off and my girls have lost a few pins (as well as had some near misses). This past trip, my husband bought a small bag of the locking backs (which are not cheap) and honestly, we even had problems with them falling off. On the day we were in Animal Kingdom, as he was putting the locking back on some of the pins, we starting talking to a nice man who is really into the pin thing. He told us a trick he does with the rubber Mickey-shaped pin backs and he has never lost one: As you start to put the black rubber back on, push the "handle" part of the back to the side, so that the "stem" pushes through at an angle, and sticks out the side of the handle part of the back. This really locks them into place. - L. Burke

My family and I are currently on holiday in Florida, and we were approached the other day in the Magic Kingdom by two cast members who told us we had been selected at random to receive special "Year of a Million Dreams" lanyards, complete with two pins which cannot be bought, and therefore should not be traded. Naturally, we were delighted, but if you are the lucky recipient of one of these lanyards, please be warned -- three of us have lost our pins, which have accidentally fallen off. The Mickey shaped backs are not very secure, and unfortunately we didn't notice we had lost them until it was too late. Even if you are not a fan of food on the bone, don't let that stop you from going to the Hoop-Dee-Doo Revue. I let our hotel concierge know my aversion to food on the bone and he called over to Hoop-Dee-Doo. When we arrived I was served one of the most tender, juicy and well-seasoned boneless, skinless chicken breasts I have ever had. Great also for those watching their weight. The restaurant requests that you let them know at least 12 hours in advance. Enjoy the show! - Michelle Buchecker

Bring a clamp-on type umbrella. We were able to bend ours around to keep our toddler shaded at all times. We saw many strollers with canopies where the kids were still directly in the sun. Also, buy clear, 39-gallon garbage bags. They are cheap, and cover an umbrella stroller nicely. Also you can carry two or three in a small bag and just throw them out when you are done. Finally, if your umbrella stroller doesn't have a basket, consider a bag that will snap on. Snaps are important so you can swing the bag around to the seat so the stroller doesn't flip over when you leave it. Ours was quilted, which helped keep our drink bottles insulated in the pockets. It also was able to stay on when you folded the stroller up too. - Mary Ellen

I got a plastic coupon organizer (the accordion wallet type) and put bandages in one section, bug repellant in another, along with hand wipes, sunscreen, etc. It worked so well that I have added the coupon organizer to my "Disney supplies." I think it will keep our trip backpack organized as well! I plan to add in individual packs of over-the-counter medicines. - Beth Spellman

Rent a villa off property. There is a huge over-supply of very good quality villas and for larger parties especially (that would need more than one hotel room) they offer fantastic value as well as all the conveniences of a modern home, particularly if families don't want to "Mickey Overdose" and want to enjoy other Orlando attractions. - Brian Hatton

With the necessity of ADRs (Advanced Dining Reservations) and keeping track of all those reservation numbers, I decided this year to type a list of our reservations. I included the date, time, and name/location. Then I shrunk the text, printed it and laminated it. It was smaller than a credit card! I put a hole in it, placed it on a carabiner and hung it on my backpack. It was always handy and ready for use and easier to make any needed changes! - Marie from Long Island

We have received many compliments on our idea for character autographs and thought we would share our idea with your readers. My daughters are 9 and 14 years old, a little too old for autograph books (their idea), so we purchased canvas backpacks at our local arts and crafts store for a few dollars. We brought along several permanent markers and a stiff piece of cardboard to insert into the backpack so the characters have a nice surface to write on. Paperclips to hold the fabric and cardboard are helpful. We have been told they appreciate this, as it makes signing easier. The girls can carry their packs with them to the parks and add signatures whenever they see a new character. It makes a nice fashion statement to be seen walking around with designer signatures on their backs. - Rubykorner10

We've said this before, but it should be mentioned again: put your name and address on your items when you're touring the parks! On the first day in the parks I bought autograph books for my daughters. When we purchased them, the cast member told me to make sure I put our name and address inside each book, because if it ever got lost, they would mail it back to us. Lo and behold, one of my daughters "misplaced" her book within that first hour. We retraced our steps, but the book was nowhere to be found. Imagine my surprise when we received a package from WDW addressed to my daughter when we got home -- it was the missing book! - Pam Etheridge
