Tips for Disney Parks & Cruise Lines

ANIMAL KINGDOM - To encourage our children to take some time and enjoy the magnificent Tree of Life, we created a Tree of Life Scavenger Hunt Game. Prior to our trip we created a list of 50 or so animals that we thought might be found on the Tree of Life. We made two copies of the list and then at the Animal Kingdom divided the family into two groups for the game. After deciding on a meeting place and time (20 minutes is plenty) each team travels around the tree marking off animals found. The team with the most animals wins. Note for each minute late, there is a penalty of one animal. Last time, the winning team each got a $10 souvenir. Another time the winning team got to choose the next ride. Have fun! - Diane Parkansky

Instead of the typical autograph books, we purchased softballs and had the characters sign them. Both my children are avid sports fans so when we got home, we purchased the clear boxes to store them in. We added the year after we got all our autographs. This year when we go, we are taking a bag of baseballs. - Natalie

EDITOR'S NOTE: Clever autograph idea! But remember, many of the costumed characters may find it difficult to hold and sign a baseball.

Food & Wine Festival - We just came back from WDW and wanted to let your readers know that you can use the snack option to pay for food at the Epcot Food and Wine festival. We used all of our snack options as we made our way around the countires and were so full that we didn't need to use our table service credit for dinner. We saved it for our last day and enjoyed lunch at the Coral Reef. It really worked out well because we always have extra snack credits that we need to use up on our last day. - Jackie Davidson

We ate a fantastic meal at Boatwright's (Port Orleans) with great service. Regarding the Disney Dining Plan, it's good to know that the smoothies listed at the top of the menu are included as drink options with your Table Service Credit. They were so delicious and filling that they served as desserts, allowing us to pack our apple pies and fresh fruits for breakfast the next day. - Teressa

Hope this helps someone else from getting frustrated. We were ready to book our FastPass+ 60 days out. We logged in to My Disney Experience at midnight on the day we were able to select our FastPass+. The system was locked and would not allow us to make any selections. We spent almost an hour searching for why we could not access the system and finally stumbled upon a possible reason. The FastPass+ system will not let you make selections until all the parks are closed. The Magic Kingdom was open until 1 a.m. that day (morning). So we waited a few minutes until after 1 a.m. and then the FastPass+ system unlocked and we were able to start making our selections for the days of our stay. - Linda V.

We had a fantastic trip aboard the Disney Fantasy with our young sons. We brought our own sand toys and snorkel gear on the trip to save some money. Also, if your itinerary has Castaway Cay as your last stop, keep in mind that your beach gear and swimsuits may not have time to totally dry before you need to get your luggage packed and in the hallway for collection on the last night. It is also hard to get the sand completely out of everything. Bring zipper-top or plastic bags to wrap those items in before packing in your suitcase. - Heidi G.

For your vegetarian readers -- We had dinner last week at the Garden Grill at the Land in Epcot, and I was talking with our server about vegetarian options. Usually I request a child's dinner in addition to the usual family style fare (even though we travel without kids), because it gives me a few more side dishes to snack on. However, the server told me that they are now serving a vegetable couscous for those who want a vegetarian option. He said they had just started offering it. I'm not usually a fan of couscous, but it was wonderful! I also still sampled the sides from the regular dinner plates. I definitely felt like I had a healthier dinner, instead of just filling up on mashed potatoes and mac and cheese! - Shelley

My family and I have always enjoyed looking for Hidden Mickeys around Disney World. I had a great idea for a Hidden Mickeys activity for the readers. We all hate when our trip to Disney is over and we have to go back to the real world, but that's no reason we have to let go of the magic. While visiting Chicago, my wife and I were standing outside a restaurant and I noticed a Hidden Mickey on the sidewalk in a grate around a tree. I'm sure if we look around we can find Hidden Mickeys all over. Just a thought. - Mike L.

On our way out of the park, my daughter and I spied a silhouette cart down a side alley of Main Street, USA. It was after midnight, but the young woman was still doing silhouettes. We hurried over and she cheerily did one more silhouette for us. We were done in about 15 minutes, and for only about $15 including a frame, I think it's one of the best and most unique souvenirs at Walt Disney World. It's a special keepsake for my 9-year-old daughter of our fun marathon day at Magic Kingdom. - Natalie H.

We told our small ones that if they were ever separated from us, to just stay put and we would find them. We told them not to wander around looking for us, but to let us come find them. It would be much easier for us to find them than for them to find us, as they would not have a clue where we had been since being separated. We knew a CM would stumble upon a parentless child within moments, so they knew to recognize their name tags and flag one down, but not to wander from where they were. When this did actually happen to us with our son while in AK, while it seemed like an eternity that we were separated, within less than five minutes, we were having a tearful reunion, and worth mentioning, no one strayed far from Mom or Dad the rest of the trip!

What the kids did not realize was that we had rehearsed this with them without their knowledge. Soon after we entered the first park of that visit, Dad got "lost". The kids and I backtracked our steps, and sure enough, Dad was sitting on the bench where we had become separated, waiting for us to come find him. Yes, I could have called him on the cell phone, but for some "reason" my phone wouldn't work at the moment. Of course that reason was the kids didn't have cell phones at their young age, and our plan might not have stuck in their minds like it did if we had just called Dad and found him right away. While I certainly hope no one ever has to experience a lost child, we all know it does happen, so it is better to be prepared. - Patti Baker

Here's a tip for those of you who have to use Disney transportation to get to a very early morning breakfast reservation in the parks or resorts. Take the bus from your resort heading to the theme park closest to where you are going. Take a Magic Kingdom bus for Chef Mickey's or Trail's End, Animal Kingdom for Boma's breakfast, etc. When you get on, be sure to tell the driver where your final destination is. Often times if the bus is not crowded and it is still prior to park opening times, they will take you directly to your destination after dropping off at the park they were headed to. This is not always the case but it happens more often than not. - Jack Marshall EDITOR'S NOTE: Boats from the Magic Kingdom to Fort Wilderness begin 1/2 hour before park opening. If you have early dining reservations at Trails End, you would need to walk to the Contemporary to catch the boat from there to Ft. Wilderness. These boats begin service at 6:45am daily.
