Tips about FastPass+ and Food & Beverage

Some may not know that there's a Disney grocery delivery service for the Fort Wilderness cabins. If you're a cabin guest, you can pre-order a pantry full of fresh groceries days and even months before you arrive and they'll be ready to enjoy the moment you arrive! Choose from the pre-selected list of popular grocery items and submit your order, along with your cabin reservation details, in one of three ways: by email, fax, or US mail. Hubby and I went to WDW a few weeks ago and we discovered that if you buy the $10 souvenir popcorn bucket you can get refills for only $1.50. Same bucket/same deal at any park! This is great if you are paying out of pocket for snacks and meals (and love popcorn!). - Michelle Henshaw

I recently had the chance to spend a night doing the Highway in the Sky Dine Around. I have been going to Disney World for 20 years now, usually twice a year for the festivals. I have to say this event was one of the best things I have ever done at Disney, although dessert had few choices. I hope that they keep this event going as I would surely do this again. In response to a tip a few weeks ago, I just wanted to throw in an additional tip. If you receive a FastPass+ recovery because of an attraction downtime, you must be very careful with any other FastPasses you have in that park! For example, a Frozen "recovery" FastPass would be good at any other FP attraction in the park. For example, if you also had a FastPass for Spaceship Earth at 2 p.m. and tried to use it by checking in at 1:59, your Frozen recovery FP would be used, not your Spaceship Earth FP. Make sure if you have any recovery FP you are waiting to use that you check in for your other FP a few minutes AFTER the windows open. - Amanda

My wife and I had FastPass+ for Frozen at Epcot recently. Unfortunately, Elsa was acting up and froze the ride and kept it from running most of the day. Fortunately, I checked my email on my phone in the middle of the afternoon and saw an email from Walt Disney World informing me that I could use the Fastpass+ at either Frozen, if it was working at some point the rest of the day, or I could use it on any other FastPass+ ride in the park. No changes to the Fastpass was required. Just show up at a ride sometime and use it. Almost seemed too easy to be true, but we went over to Soarin' and sure enough it worked when we matched our Mickey on the bands to the Mickey at the Fastpass+ entrance! Definitely pays to check your emails during the day if your Fastpass+ attraction is down. - Mark Harder

EDITOR'S NOTE: This is actually normal procedure -- if an attraction that you have a FastPass+ for is down during your assigned time, you will be notified by email as to what your alternatives are. As Mark notes, it pays to check your email and/or your My Disney Experience account if you're carrying a smart phone with you!

This tip about tips for visitors traveling from the U.K.: This isn't specifically Disney-related, but it is important, especially if you're new to the U.S. Servers expect to be tipped; it's how they really earn their wages. Don't try to avoid it or make lame excuses, if you receive an average/good service, a reasonable tip is 15 percent, if very good/excellent, at least 20 percent. Even if you buy a beer, tip! - Phill Barnett

Arrange for dinner at Chef Mickey's at the Contemporary Resort for the evening of your arrival. You may not want to waste a day on your ticket by going into the parks for just a few hours, especially if you've been traveling all day, but the kids want to get started. With young ones they want to SEE MICKEY and at Chef Mickey's you can see all the main characters right at your table, and get those autographs and pictures. The kids feel like they are at Disney right away and you aren't having to wait in line at the parks to see the main characters. We even had our daughter bring a picture she drew of Mickey and Minnie and they autographed it for her at the table. Very special. With little ones who want to see the princesses instead, I'd try to arrange for a princess character meal so the whole trip isn't about chasing down the characters. - Jennifer B.

If you are looking to have one of the world famous Monte Cristo Sandwiches at Disneyland, you have two choices: The Blue Bayou Restaurant or the Cafe Orleans. Although the Blue Bayou has wonderful atmosphere, the cost of the sandwich is double what it is at Cafe Orleans. Cafe Orleans is more of a small bistro type of restaurant. So if you are on a budget, you can get the same thing for half the price if you are willing to forgo the ambience. Also note that the Monte Cristo sandwich is available for lunch and dinner at Cafe Orleans, but is only on the lunch menu at Blue Bayou. - Janet Sherby

Even though the price of a single bottle of water is now $3.00, there are 1.1 liter (51 oz.) bottles of water in some of the shops that are $4.50. They are a much better value than the single bottles sold at stands in the parks. And if you have any type of discount available to you -- such as Annual Pass, DVC, etc., you can get the 1.1 liter bottle for $3.60. - Mary Waite

Make sure your kids are tall enough to ride the rides you're getting FastPasses for. I've seen a lot of people get really upset about this. They'll have FastPasses to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, only to get to the FastPass gate and be told their kids are too short to ride. FastPasses make wait times shorter, they do not make kids taller! And remember, close enough is NOT good enough when it comes to height restrictions at Disney. - Cast Member Jane

When you are in the parks waiting on FastPass+, keep an eye on your smart/cell phone email. During the Memorial Day weekend at Animal Kingdom, I got an email on my iPhone informing me of a "Change to my upcoming Disney Fastpass+ experience". It told me my scheduled Dinosaur Fastpass+ wasn't available because the ride was "temporarily unavailable". But I was informed a new FastPass+, good anytime during normal theme park hours, had been added to my wristband and could be used at any of the premium experiences at Animal Kingdom. This let me chose any time and any ride from the following: Primeval Whirl, Dinosaur, It's Tough to be a Bug!, Expedition Everest, Kilimanjaro Safaris, Finding Nemo, or Kali River Rapids. It worked. I was able to walk right into the FastPass+ line at Kilimanjaro Safaris, even though I had already ridden Safari two hours earlier. Two Safaris before lunch is quite the treat! Bob Jackson

EDITOR'S NOTE: If a ride goes down and you are given the opportunity to use a FP+ for another attraction you cannot go back later in the day to the original ride if it comes back up and use a FP. Once you accept the new one and use it you are out of luck with the original. Be sure you aren't too quick to do something else if the down attractions is something you really want to do. Most attractions are not down the entire day, but it is a wait and see "game".

Here is a tip I discovered for remembering your time for FastPass+. My family and I have annual passes with MagicBands and go about every two weeks. (How lucky are we?!) Before we get to the parks I go to the MDE app under my plans and screen shot all the times on my iPhone (other smart devices do this, too), then save it as my lock-screen wallpaper. This way I only have to make the backlight turn on, like checking the time, and there are all our plans/times. Saves a lot of time rather than opening the app. Hope this helps someone! - Krystal Lane

As a new Disney Vacation Club member, I decided to give the Tables in Wonderland card a try. We had a dinner reservation almost every night, so it paid for itself within the week. I can also use it when we return next year since it's good for about 13 months. You automatically get charged gratuity of 18 percent, which is about what I'd tip anyway. The 20 percent discount from the card basically covers that gratuity and then some. It was definitely worth the $100. - Jennifer

The gluten-free offerings [at 'Ohana] for my husband were excellent, and included lettuce wraps, chicken wings, all of the grilled meats and a special dessert. They did require my 10-year-old to be charged as an adult, which made the price tag high in my opinion, but the food was great. - A reader in the AllEars.Net Rate and Review section

On a recent visit to the Magic Kingdom, I stopped in the Main Street Bakery to check out the recent renovation and treat myself to a Starbucks coffee. When I reached the counter to pay, I was pleasantly surprised to be able to pay with my Starbucks gift card. Not only did I buy coffee with my gift card, but also a bottle of soda for my son.
