Magic Kingdom - I read about another reader having problems making reservations for the Harmony Barber Shop. I called 407-WDW-PLAY and the cast member helped me immediately, there was no confusion. She also told me that there are some appointments available BEFORE 9 a.m., some days as early as 8:05 a.m. Might give you a head start on your Magic Kingdom day. - Marianne

This may sound strange, but my tip is to go to AllEars.Net's tips database, and read all the tips pertaining to your question or subject. Next week will be the first time we will use the dining plan (it's free for our trip August 18-27), so I went back and read all the tips for how to get the most for your dining plan, even when it's free. There were quite a few really good tips on how and where to get the most out of the snack credits, for example, trading in counter service meals for three or four snack items if you haven't used them all. Also, on the AllEars® Dining page, there is a link to read what other visitors have to say about the different dining plans. This section had lots of good ideas and recommendations for how and where to use your credits. - Trudy Boudreaux

I've always kept receipts and written records of all our trips to WDW, starting in September 1971. In the '90s when we bought our first computer I put it all in. I can tell you the dates, the resort and room number, room rate, who joined us and the highlights of each of the 62 visits (430 nights) that we have stayed in Disney resorts. I also include highlights of each trip, like meeting Miss America and Bob Hope in the Studios, my wife singing with Bob Jackson in the Cotton Co-op and all the other magical moments we have enjoyed. - Mike Shook

Be careful about leaving valuables in your stroller/wheelchair. On the last day of our trip my camera and my daughter's purse were stolen directly from our wheelchair in the wheelchair area at the exit of the Haunted Mansion. The camera was in one of the drink pockets and her purse was under her backpack that was on the seat. The most valuable items were the pictures themselves, after a week of Disney parks. We have been going there for quite a number of years and never experienced a similar problem (except for one stuffed critter grabbed). Security said that instances like this were rare. - Jim Colman

My husband and I went to WDW for our honeymoon and had the time of our lives. We purchased the deluxe meal plan, but we noticed that it was A LOT of food for two people, we'd go to our lunch reservations still full from breakfast! We have a new strategy for our next visit: get the deluxe plan again, have breakfast every morning, use the snack points in lieu of a sit down lunch, and book as many fancy "two-meal" dinners as possible to maximize the experience! We definitely thought the deluxe package was worth it (for two young adults, no children yet) and we can't wait to try this new strategy out next time. - Adrienne

We just returned from a great five days down at WDW... One thing I discovered this trip was how many cards I ended up carrying around: park ticket, hotel room key, Disney Visa redemption card, Photopass card (or cards, because we always end up with more than one), Fastpasses... whew! That's a lot, and that's not even counting what's usually in my wallet, like a credit card and ID. I was constantly afraid I would lose something. My uncle (I have to credit him on this one) came up with a great solution: he picked up a small business card case (around $5) at an office supply store to keep all of his important cards in. He always had his Fastpasses ready to get in line while the rest of us were still digging through our pockets. I've already picked one up and it's in my "things to take to Walt Disney World" pile for our next trip! - Nathan Jones EDITOR'S NOTE: Magic Bands have eliminated a few cards to carry around the parks. The BoardWalk often offers jugglers and magicians in the evening. My son loves just sitting and watching all of the performers. But we just returned from our rainiest Disney trip ever. We certainly thought that the performers would not be on the BoardWalk on those nights. We were right, they weren't -- but, to my son's delight, we found that they perform indoors on those nights. We found the performers near the bar area and also in the lobby. - Kelly

When on the Disney Dining Plan, signature or character restaurants require the use of two table service meals. To compensate for not having a table service dinner one night try having a late lunch/early dinner on your first night with the counter service meal for that day at Disney Springs's Wolfgang Puck Express at the Marketplace. You won't even miss the table service meal for that day with selections like roast chicken and garlic mashed potatoes. The portions and items on the menu are large and definitely not your typical counter service fare. Since you'll be eating a little earlier than usual, that day's snack will definitely hit the spot later that night. - Diane Fehring

We just stayed at the Old Key West and took the basic Dining Plan. What we didn't know was that the OKW doesn't have too many counter service options, basically just sandwiches, so the counter service option really isn't useful here. It would have been much cheaper if we had just paid for our table service meals. Also with the change of tip not being included and appetizers not being included, it's not such a good deal anymore -- unless all you do is eat 24/7, and not visit the parks at all. The resort itself is great though. We had an older unit, huge, and a great location. Bus service was very dependable. - Nancy Morris

We are going to WDW in January. Right now, we have two nights at Kidani, followed by four nights at Bay Lake Tower. We are wait-listed to get into BLT for the first two nights. In speaking with DVC, they are considered two separate reservations. Thus for the Disney Dining Plan, we will have to purchase twice. Once at Kidani check-in for those two nights and then again at BLT for those four nights. If any entitlements from Kidani are not used by midnight on the night of checkout, they are lost. You cannot transfer them to the BLT entitlements. So, for those who are staying at WDW, but are splitting their stay between two or more resorts, they need to plan accordingly, so that they don't lose entitlements. This is not just for DVC of course, but for anyone using the DDP. Also, for anyone in a family/group staying in the same room, where any members of the group may only be in the room for a subset of days, they still need to get the DDP for everyone in the party for all nights. - Marc

Just wanted to let you know that you can now purchase the Deluxe Dining plan when booking your room using the military discount. We will be taking a trip in October and were able to book the Deluxe plan this week! Previously, you were only able to purchase the basic dining when staying in a room at a military rate. To keep the thread, no pun intended, of lost glasses pins/screws going, here is a tip to keep from losing them in the first place -- put a drop of clear nail polish on the thread end of the screw and it will act like Loctite®. - Marc

I saw the tip from the reader regarding getting her husband's eyeglasses repaired at the Magic Kingdom watch store. On our trip in April, the screw in my mother's eyeglasses came out. We were staying on property and called the front desk to see if they would happen to have an eyeglass repair kit. They did and promptly brought it to our room-free of charge. My mother now carries it in her purse for any future accidents. - Tracie Smith

Even if you're not counting calories, skip dessert with your quick service on the Disney Dining Plan and opt for a second beverage. You will greatly appreciate it and it leaves you with a nice ice cream or treat or beverage later in the day. - Rose Ann Nelson

We learned a helpful hint regarding the Standard Disney Dining Plan (counter and table service meals) from one of the wonderful servers at the Port Orleans Riverside Mill Food Court while purchasing dinner on our last evening. Though we had made priority seating arrangements long in advance of our trip, we had canceled a couple of table service meals during our week's stay. This left us with zero counter service meals and four table service meals remaining on our plan on our last day of vacation. We had intended to pay for our counter service meal that evening, but the helpful cast member told us that you can always use a table service credit for a quick service meal (just not the other way around). So we saved $24 that we would have otherwise spent, thinking we had used up our counter service credits. So if you have table service meals left toward the end of your stay with no plans to use them at one of the table service eateries, you can use them at any of the counter service restaurants. Just tell the server you'd like to use table service credits to pay for your meal. We will likely use the Counter Service Dining Plan next trip (the older I get, the less inclined I am to be held to the "tyranny of the spreadsheet" to coin an AllEars® phrase!), but it's comforting to know there is a way to use leftover credits if needed.
