The Harsh Reality of Riding Soarin’ in Disney World

Soarin’ might seem like one of Disney’s most peaceful, awe-inspiring rides—but the reality can be a lot less magical than you’d expect.

Soarin’

On paper, Soarin’ is an incredible experience: you’re lifted into the air, your feet dangle as you “fly” over breathtaking landmarks around the world, and the whole thing is set to one of Disney’s most iconic soundtracks. But before you get that magical moment of takeoff, there’s a lot you’ll need to endure first—and even once you’re in the air, it’s not all smooth sailing. Let’s talk about the harsh realities of riding Soarin’ in EPCOT.

The Queue That Never Ends

If you’ve ever waited for Soarin’, you know exactly what we mean when we say the queue feels like it stretches for a quarter of a mile. And it’s not just long—it’s one of those deceptively long waits where you think you’re almost there about seven different times before realizing you’re not even close.

What makes it worse is that the queue itself isn’t exactly stimulating. It’s themed to look like an airport terminal, and while that’s clever in concept, it also means it can feel way too realistic if you’re someone who gets airport anxiety. You’re standing under stark lighting, listening to ambient terminal announcements, and watching a massive crowd shuffle toward their “gate.”

And for anyone hoping to distract themselves with their phone, there’s a fun little twist: cell signal can be pretty spotty in this area. Depending on your carrier, you might lose service completely while you’re waiting. So, pro tip—download a game or bring something non-digital to keep yourself occupied, because there’s not much else to do but stare at the walls.

Lightning Lane Isn’t Much Better

You’d think grabbing a Lightning Lane for Soarin’ would be your ticket to skipping the worst of that line—but sadly, it’s not the magic fix it used to be. These days, you skip a very small portion of the queue. You’ll still end up waiting in a hallway that feels like the world’s longest TSA pre-check line.

So if you were hoping to save time, it might not be worth using your Lightning Lane here. You’ll end up standing around in the same bland terminal area, just for slightly less time.

The Ride Itself Can Be… Unsettling

Now, let’s talk about the actual experience once you’re strapped in. Soarin’ gives the illusion of flight by lifting your row of seats into the air and tilting you forward toward the massive screen. It’s an amazing effect—but for anyone with a fear of heights or motion sickness, it can get intense fast.

That moment when the seats tilt forward? Every time, it feels like you might just slide right out. Of course, you’re completely secure—but try telling that to your stomach when it drops during that first “lift-off.”

And if you’re prone to motion sickness, the sweeping camera movements and the subtle tilting can definitely get to you. Disney does a good job of keeping things smooth, but it’s still easy to feel a little queasy by the time you land.

The Basket of Doom

Here’s a detail most first-time riders don’t realize until they’re boarding: your personal items go into a little mesh basket underneath your seat. And since you’re lifted several feet off the ground during the ride, that basket is dangling above a dark, seemingly bottomless pit.

Your belongings go in the mesh basket below the seat

It’s not exactly reassuring when you realize your phone, wallet, or favorite Loungefly bag is just sitting there in the void. In fact, we know of one story about the sibling of one of our team members. On one of their visits, the sibling had a Mr. Potato Head Loungefly with interchangeable pieces—and one of those pieces slipped right out and fell into the darkness below. Cast Members brought out flashlights and tried to find it, but it was gone for good. So, if you’ve got valuables or items with loose pieces, make sure they’re zipped up tight. Once something falls into that pit, it’s not coming back.

The Perfect Seat? It’s Harder Than You Think

If you’ve ever wondered why your Soarin’ photos or videos look a little off, here’s the not-so-fun truth: you’ll probably have someone’s feet in your shot.

We were seated far too the side

Unless you’re lucky enough to land a spot in the top row, you’re likely going to see dangling shoes in your view as you “fly” over the Taj Mahal or the Eiffel Tower.

You’ll want to request the best seats

It doesn’t ruin the ride, but it definitely takes away a bit of the magic—especially if you’ve been dreaming of those picture-perfect scenic moments.

It’s Still Worth Doing… But Know What You’re In For

Here’s the thing—we’re not saying Soarin’ isn’t worth experiencing. The ride itself is stunning, but it’s important to go in with realistic expectations.

Soarin’

You’re probably going to wait in a long, uneventful line that feels like an actual airport terminal. You might deal with weak cell service, so plan a way to keep yourself entertained. And when you finally get on, remember to tuck away your valuables and brace yourself if you’re not great with heights.

If you know what to expect, you’ll have a much better time. Soarin’ can still be magical—it just comes with a few real-world bumps along the way.
