NEW Look at EPCOT’s Moana-Inspired Attraction

For months, we’ve been watching the progress being made on the new Moana-inspired attraction coming to EPCOT, and now we’ve got another update!

It’s Coming Along!

Not too long ago, Disney shared some new details about the attraction and some of the artwork that’ll be utilized throughout the space. We’ve also seen closer looks at some of the rocks being created for the space, and more. But now it’s time to get a very special look at some of the details you’ll find here!

Disney has shared a first look at some of the details you’ll find in this new attraction coming to EPCOT — Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana.

According to Disney, the team of Imagineers and their crew of artisans have already started sculpting the rockwork for, what Disney calls, “this immersive exploration trail.”

So what do you need to know about this experience and its details? First, it’s designed for all ages, so bring the kiddos and the grandpas. Second, through this experience, you’ll be able to “explore and engage with water” and learn about its process of traveling from the sky to the ocean and back again. Much of the attraction focuses on the natural water cycle.

Imagineering is working on this project with artists and cultural consultants from Walt Disney Animation Studios. Part of the experience is inspired by Moana’s “fierce determination” to protect the environment and her unique bond with the ocean and water in general. Disney shares that guests will get the chance to learn about the importance of water through this experience, but the attraction will also give everyone the opportunity to experience the “playful personality” of water, similar to the playful personality the ocean had in the film.

If you’re a big fan of the Moana film, get ready to search for all kinds of details throughout the attraction. You’ll see some familiar shapes and characters in the rockwork and waterways.

One character you’ll spot is Moana herself, carved right into some of the rockwork. The photo below actually shows Principal Dimensional Designer, Jim Towler, sculpting the maquette of Moana (made of foam). Imagineering’s designs for all of the attraction’s pieces will go through a few different versions before they reach their final form. We have a feeling that wherever this design is placed in the attraction, it’ll be a very popular photo spot!

Disney also shared another photo of some work in progress for this attraction. This is a “sample from the mountain-like forms that will soon mark the entrance to the attraction.” In this rockwork, you’ll see the spiral from the Moana movie.

Unfortunately, Disney still hasn’t revealed an official opening date for this attraction yet, but we’re hopeful that the D23 Expo could bring some exciting news about this and other projects in the works at Disney World.

  1. I am starting to feel that I will never see the finished project. And, I am getting a little put out by such a large chunk of Epcot being behind barricades. We are not getting any younger and this is a major intrusion.
