4 Unspoken Rules for Riding the Disney World Ferryboats

There are two options to get to Magic Kingdom from the Transportation and Ticket Center (TTC) — the Monorail and the Ferryboats. Most people take the Monorail, while the Ferryboats get a bad wrap for being slower. However, a couple of years ago, we timed our trip to Magic Kingdom via the Ferryboat and the Monorail, and it ended up taking practically the SAME amount of time!

So while everyone is heading to the Monorail, consider getting in line for the Ferryboat! If you’re willing to take our word for it and hop on the boat, consider these three unspoken rules for your next trip.

Pack a Coat and Hang On to Your Headwear

We genuinely love the Ferryboat and do take it from time to time for a change in pace and scenery. But there is one thing you definitely need to be aware of before you hop on the boat — it can be COLD and WINDY.

Depending on the time of year, the breeze and chill off the lake is no joke. If you’re heading to Magic Kingdom in the winter, be sure to pack a jacket (a good thing to do anyway during the chilly months) and hold onto your hats and ears (ah, ear headbands that is). We have seen people lose their hats and Mickey ears to the lake, and we’re sorry to say, the Ferryboat is not stopping or turning around.

The Ferryboats Have Their Own Magical Vibe Worth Experiencing

The Ferryboats totally add to the aesthetic of Disney World. They make you feel like you’ve jumped back in time to the days of Main St., U.S.A., before you’ve even set foot in Magic Kingdom. Plus, Disney music is pumped through the speakers, setting the stage for your stop at the park!

The Magic Kingdom Ferryboat is MAGICAL!

While the monorail may be better temperature-controlled at times, you only get to listen to narration about the park and resorts. Yes, that can be interesting (the first time you hear it), but it’s not nearly as magical as being out on a time-period accurate Ferryboat bopping to classic Disney music.

Don’t Shy Away from the Upper Decks

When the Ferryboat is really busy, you’ll notice most people will stay down on the main deck, thinking they’ll be able to get off the boat faster and into the park quicker. But that’s not necessarily true since a second set of stairs was recently added to the upper deck. The upper decks are usually the places to go, especially when it’s busy.

While everyone stays down on the main deck, head to the upper decks, if you’re able, where you’ll find far more available space to hang out on your cruise to Magic Kingdom. It really doesn’t save you any time getting off the boat by being up on the lower deck.

You Go Through Security BEFORE Boarding the Ferryboat

A huge perk of using the Transportation and Ticket Center is that you go through security before boarding the Ferryboat. That means when you get to Magic Kingdom, all you gotta do is get to the entrance, go through the tap stalls, and, voila, you’re in the park!

Security at the Transportation and Ticket Center

If you’re planning to drive yourself to Magic Kingdom or coming on a shuttle from a non-Disney hotel, you’ll have to get to the theme park via the TTC. Those of you who pass through here will enter the TTC through a security checkpoint first.
