If you’re a longtime Disney World fan, you may have heard whispers about these underground tunnels or even caught a glimpse of them during Disney’s Keys to the Kingdom tour. But, do you know where the tunnels really are?

To most guests strolling down Main Street, U.S.A., Magic Kingdom feels like you’re in a magical bubble. Characters appear exactly where they should, you rarely see trash on the ground, and you never see evidence of other Cast Members from different lands. Some guests might not realize that this seamless experience is made possible by an entire world hidden beneath their feet, called the Magic Kingdom Utilidors.
Utilidors Map
Below, we’ve created a map to show you where the utilidors are located just beneath your feet at Magic Kingdom. The orange lines show where the tunnels run all over the park. You can see how Cast Members can walk from their entrance to the land in which they work. This helps keep the magic for guests all over the park.

Why the Utilidors Exist
The Utilidor system was designed with one main goal in mind: to preserve the illusion of the Magic Kingdom. Walt Disney was adamant that nothing should break the immersive storytelling of each land. A Tomorrowland cast member walking through Frontierland, for example, would instantly shatter that illusion. To prevent this, the Utilidors allow cast members to move quickly and efficiently beneath the park, completely out of guest view.

Because Magic Kingdom was constructed on elevated ground, the tunnels aren’t technically “underground” in the traditional sense. Instead, the park itself sits on the second floor, with the Utilidors forming a hidden first level that mirrors the layout of the lands above. This design allows Cast Members to reach nearly any part of the park without ever stepping into guest areas until it’s time to “make magic.”
A Hidden Cast Member World
Beyond transportation, the Utilidors function as a fully operational backstage hub. This is where many cast members take breaks, eat meals, and reset between shifts. Locker rooms, break rooms, and costuming areas are all located within the tunnel system, along with makeup and dressing rooms for performers. There are even food locations tucked away below the park, providing Cast Members with quick and convenient dining options during their shifts, including a Subway.

Trash, Technology, and Color-Coded Navigation
One of the most fascinating features of the Utilidors is the trash system. Instead of Cast Members hauling large trash bags through guest areas, trash is dropped into chutes that run through the ceiling of the tunnels. These chutes transport waste efficiently across the park. The walls are also painted different colors depending on which land you’re beneath, making it easy for Cast Members to know exactly where they are at all times.

Strict Rules and Secret Access Points
Disney is famously protective of what happens backstage, and for good reason. Photography and video recording are not allowed in backstage areas and within the Utilidors. This helps preserve the mystery and ensures that the magic remains intact for guests. Hidden staircases located throughout backstage areas connect the Utilidors to the park above. These stairwells allow cast members to emerge exactly where they need to be.
