Magic Kingdom is changing in so many ways. First, Frontierland is getting a new expansion (that has permanently closed Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island). Magic Kingdom is also getting a brand new Villains land. Both Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin are closed for updates.

Even Carousel of Progress will be getting a big update soon. So when Disney announced a major change coming to the most iconic thing in Magic Kingdom, Cinderella Castle, Disney adults had some thoughts.
At the recent Destination D23 event, Disney announced that Cinderella Castle would soon be getting a new paint job similar to its pre-50th anniversary look, when it sported grays, creams, blues, and touches of gold. Here’s the concept art Disney released of the new (or old) look:

Obviously, with this being a huge change to the most iconic piece of architecture in Disney World, AllEars readers had some opinions about this update. We asked you about it on Facebook, and you responded. Granted, most are in favor of the change.
Patti wrote, “Magical and exciting to have Cinderella Castle back to its original colors! I’m a very happy Mouseketeer. Now if they could only get rid of those useless castle projections, all will be right in the kingdom!”

Nancy said, “So happy! I thought it looked more elegant before. Glad it’s going back!”
A lot of you also mentioned that you’d like to see the Christmas Dream Lights return (we agree). “I am a pink girlie, but Cinderella isn’t pink to me. So I’m excited. Just hoping they bring back the dream lights!”
Michelle agreed, “So happy that the original color scheme is coming back. . . I don’t hate the pink but im more of a traditionalist and just prefer the original better.”

Lisa commented, “Definitely magical the old colors look amazing.”
Debbie mentioned that the newer colors are more representative of Sleeping Beauty: “So excited… having been waiting to get Cinderella Castle back. She has been hiding to long in that Sleeping Beauty dress up.”
Ruth agrees, “Old colours are definitely better and more authentic.”

However, a few of our readers prefer the newer look. Alexandra commented, “This is the only castle I know. So, very sad. I was engaged in front of this version of the castle. Our lonely Covid days sitting in front of it. I’m broken hearted.”
Peter even said reverting back to the old colors seemed boring: “Not for me. Felt like the change for the 50th was an amazing. Going back seems a little boring and also goes against what Walt’s philosophy was on always moving forward.”

Other AllEars readers are fine either way. Katherine wrote, “The word that keeps coming to mind for me is ‘fine.’ I love the castle in all its iterations so I’m perfectly happy, no matter what. As long as it’s there.”
Ian commented with something similar: “I had no issues with the current color scheme. I liked the original and it’s current iteration equally. So I’m not extremely excited about the announcement, but I’m also not disappointed at all. It’ll be a nice refresh back to classic Magic Kingdom.”
Nicole thinks it should always change every once in a while: “I think changing it up every 5-10 years would be so cool. I’m not losing sleep about the colors, just think it’d be fun to see different styles and such.”

Perhaps the best comment, though, came from Robert, who wrote, “As long as its not the pink birthday cake.”
I have to agree with Robert on this one. That giant Pepto Bismol birthday cake overlay was the first time I ever saw Cinderella Castle, and it was…well…something.

The pink and excessive gold is gaudy, although not as bad as the horror of the “Birthday Cake”. I love the more classic, beautiful look of the grey and glue with touches of gold. It’s so iconic.
