When Is the Liberty Square Riverboat Ride Permanently Closing in Magic Kingdom?

Earlier this year, we heard TONS of big news about new lands, attractions, and more coming to Disney World.

Magic Kingdom

A new Villains Land is coming to Magic Kingdom, a new Tropical Americas Land is coming to Animal Kingdom, Test Track is getting a revamping at EPCOT, and Monsters, Inc. Land is headed to Hollywood Studios! But that’s not all! Two new Cars attractions are also headed to Magic Kingdom, but unfortunately, because of where these two new rides are going, this means others are closing.

Let’s take a second to discuss these two new Cars rides and where exactly they’ll be going.

Disney announced a fast-paced ride and a family-friendly ride that will be going in Frontierland. The first will be a thrilling rally race through the mountains where you’ll “Take on wild terrain as you race across the landscape climbing mountain trails, dodging geysers and — Mater’s favorite — splashing through mudholes.”

Coming to Frontierland at Magic Kingdom, a new area themed to Pixar Animation Studios’ “Cars,” will leave Radiator Springs and head to the wilderness with two new attractions, including an off-road race.

The family-friendly ride will be great for guests, young and old! It will be geared toward smaller racers and fun for the whole family.

The two new Cars rides will replace what is currently the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island.

Tom Sawyer Island

Currently, on Rivers of America, you can sail around the island on the Liberty Square Riverboat. It’s a relaxing ride that takes you on quite the adventure through the frontier. However, in order for these new rides to be built, this classic ride will need to close permanently.

Liberty Square Riverboat

So when is the Liberty Square Riverboat closing? Well, we don’t know exactly when this ride will become unavailable just yet, but we can make some pretty good speculations.

Liberty Belle

Disney announced that construction on the new Cars attractions would “begin in early 2025.” However, we have seen the beginning phases begin for this construction in the form of a permit for Rivers of America.

Rivers of America

We can also compare this construction to that that will be going on in Animal Kingdom in DinoLand, U.S.A. The construction for the Tropical Americas land is also set to begin in early 2025, and several DinoLand attractions will close on January 13th for this construction. So, if we consider that and the fact that permits have already been filed for Rivers of America, we could see the Liberty Belle closing within the first few months of the year.

Rivers of America and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

However, the Disney World website continues to show hours for the Liberty Belle until January 28th, which is just as far out as the calendar shows for all attractions. At this point, we don’t know a real date that these Frontierland attractions will close, but we can speculate that it will likely be within the first few months of 2025. We’ll be watching for a more solid timeline announcement from Disney!

In the meantime, construction has begun on the new Villains Land beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, and Disney just recently announced that Monsters, Inc. Land will be replacing Muppets Courtyard in Hollywood Studios! Big changes are in store for Disney World, and we can’t wait to see them. We’ll just have to put up with a bit of construction in the meantime.
