NEWS: Permit Filed as Work Begins on the NEW CARS LAND in Magic Kingdom

Disney just announced some BIG changes coming to Magic Kingdom!

Cinderella Castle

Coming soon, the park is getting both a Villains-themed land and two new Cars attractions, based on the hit Pixar films. Both of these additions will help increase capacity in the park, but when will they start construction? Here’s what we know!

These announcements were made at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, and then the day after the event ended, Disney confirmed that Villains Land will go behind Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and the Cars rides will take over land that is currently home to Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America. It was announced at the time that preparations were already underway in the park for the Villains area.

But what about Cars? They’ll need to prep the area currently home to Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America to make way for these attractions. Well, it looks like Disney has just filed a permit to prepare to work on the changes in Frontierland.

Permit number 48-00714-P is a permit for 407 Basin Stormwater Modifications and it was filed for construction of a stormwater management master treatment facility just east of Magic Kingdom. It looks like this treatment facility will be used for the stormwater drained from the Frontierland area.

In fact, in the Environmental Impacts section of the permit, it says, “The project has 7.3 acres of surface water impacts to Rivers of America.” That means it’s likely this facility will be used specifically for the preparations for Cars Land.

The new Cars area of Frontierland will feature two new rides. One will be a racer-style attraction that sounds similar to Radiator Springs Racers from Disney California Adventure, except with a brand-new storyline. The second attraction will be more family-friendly and will be available to younger racers.

Disney announced that construction is set to begin on the Cars area in 2025. It’s unclear at the time exactly when Tom Sawyer Island or the Rivers of America will close, but you know we’ll let you know as soon as Disney announces it!
