Trust us, we all make mistakes sometimes. We have especially made a lot of mistakes ourselves at Disney World, but that is why we share them with you so you don’t make the same mistakes we do!
Sometimes, innocent things you can do around the park could get you in trouble. While you probably aren’t doing these things consciously to cause any issues, they can slow down or halt the process of waiting, boarding, riding, and exiting an attraction at Disney World. These are the five most common innocent mistakes we see on Disney World rides.
You may have been in line for an attraction and heard Cast Members make safety announcements over the intercom, or you may have been in line or even at an attraction when it breaks down. Sometimes, these things can be caused by innocent mistakes that visitors make.
Stepping Over the Yellow Line
When boarding a ride or even waiting for the automatic doors to open at an attraction like the Hall of Presidents or Mickey’s PhilharMagic, there is a yellow safety line painted on the floor. This line is there to make sure that you are at a safe distance from any moving objects and to keep you at a safe distance from the ride’s track.
Sometimes, these lines may seem like overkill, but Disney truly cares about safety. Cast Members use the Five Keys as a guide when they are working at Disney World: Safety, Inclusion, Show, Courtesy, and Efficiency. Cast Members are constantly told that the Safety Key trumps all the other Keys when it comes to keeping both visitors and Cast Members safe.
So even if your toes are just touching the line, odds are a Cast Member will either tell you or remind everyone to make sure your feet are behind the yellow line.
Forgetting to Buckle or Tug on the Yellow Strap
Many attractions at Disney World use safety restraints such as safety bars or seat belts to keep visitors at the attraction. Some of these safety items lower themselves for you, like on Haunted Mansion. Sometimes, you pull it down yourself, like on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. It may even only be a buckle like on Dumbo. For some more intense rides, use a seatbelt with a yellow strap.
This includes rides like Soarin’ Around the World, Star Tours, DINOSAUR, and more. Once you buckle, a Cast Member at the safety check will ask you to pull on your yellow tab, and this is done to ensure your seatbelt is clicked. As we said, Disney really does care about safety.
On a ride like Star Tours, there is a panel at the front that a Cast Member will refer to to see if everyone is buckled, and if you are not, you may get called out solo for not buckling.
Cast Members never intend to embarrass you, so please make sure you are paying attention and properly fastening your seatbelt. The same goes for pulling on the yellow tab. Sometimes, you are so excited to ride the attraction that you may tune out the Cast Member who is checking your seatbelt. So make sure you pay attention fully before the ride starts to ensure you are not holding up the ride.
Forgetting to Secure Your Personal Belongings
You do not have to really worry about losing anything on dark rides like The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh or on Under the Sea – Journey of The Little Mermaid. There are some more intense rides like Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind that you will want to make sure that your personal belongings are secured.
It is said best on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, “If any of you folks are wearin’ hats or glasses, best remove ’em; ’cause this here’s the wildest ride in the wilderness!”
You don’t want your hat or sunglasses to fly off because, obviously, it would suck to lose them, but it could also hit someone behind you on the ride.
I Lost My Glasses on Tower of Terror — Here’s What To Do If That Happens to You
In most cases, Cast Members will not be able to retrieve your lost item until the end of the day when the attraction gets powered down, meaning that you may have to wait until the next day to get your item back if they were able to find it. So make sure to secure all your items in your bag or the pouch in front of you.
Sitting on the Queue Chains to Rest
We know that you do a lot of walking in Disney World, and when you are waiting in line for a ride on your feet, you just want to rest for a moment. One of the easiest ways to do this is to sit on the chains, rocks, or other parts of the queue while you wait for a ride.
Unfortunately, doing this could get you in trouble because you could fall or be bumped, making it a safety issue. Cast Members may pass by you to tell you to get down, or an announcement may be made over the intercom.
The good news is that some queues do have seats while you are waiting, so you are more than welcome to get a quick rest there!
Forgetting to Turn Off Flash
We totally understand wanting to take pictures to remember your trip. We go to the parks every day to film and take photos, and still, this mistake happens to us.
Flash photography is not allowed on attractions. Flash can really ruin the ride experience for other riders, and flash pictures do not always turn out the best, especially on a dark-moving attraction. We have all been there when the flash goes off, and we quickly hide it, but as a rule of thumb, double check your flash is off before you start taking pictures or filming.
Not Facing Forward
You may have seen cute pictures of people riding Dumbo. Typically, they have the person either behind them or in front of them snap the photo. But this can get you in trouble as you need to face forward the entire time while on the ride. The same goes for The Magic Carpets of Aladdin and TriceraTop Spin.
Cast Members will speak through the intercom, asking you to face forward. So, if you want to get that cute picture, stick to selfies or ask someone who is not on the ride to take it for you.
We know that no one has the intention to get in trouble or get called out on a Disney World Attraction, but mistakes and accidents do happen. So make sure to avoid doing these six things the next time you ride a ride at Disney World.
