In a week of big news that has included select Disney World Resort hotels reopening, Disneyland delaying their reopening, and 2021 Disney World bookings opening, we’ve now got some BIG attractions news.
Disney has announced that they will be re-theming their Splash Mountain attractions at both Disney World AND Disneyland!
Earlier this month, a petition started circulating requesting that the attraction be rethemed (you can read the petition in its entirety here). While the petition gained traction and media attention, Disney has confirmed that they had already planned their re-theme of Splash Mountain before the petition starting.
The new theme of the attraction will be after Disney’s The Princess and the Frog. According to Disney, the ride will follow the adventures of Princess Tiana and Louis after the final kiss, leading guests on a musical adventure that will feature beloved songs from the 2009 film.
“The retheming of Splash Mountain is of particular importance today. The new concept is inclusive — one that all of our guests can connect with and be inspired by, and it speaks to the diversity of the millions of people who visit our parks each year,” Disney said in a statement.
According to the OC Register, the original Splash Mountain will be opening in its previous form starting on July 11th at Disney World, and also at Disneyland when it reopens. Disney has not yet given a date when the re-theme will begin for either coast’s attractions.
Imagineering senior creative producer Charita Carter will be leading the makeover of the rides. Describing the re-theming, she said, “Like Princess Tiana, I believe that courage and love are the key ingredients for wonderful adventures. I am delighted to be a part of bringing this fun-filled experience to our guests.”
We will continue to update with any further developments as we learn more!

replacing critter country isn’t worth it or for all Disney park fans even japan. If Walt Disney imagineers shut down critter country there will be cancel culture actions and with consequences. without honey there’s no Winnie the pooh , and without zip a dee doo dah there’s no splash mountain plus future kids and guest will be disappointed if you do such a bad thing.sure it maybe useless & racist for some people but its part of nature with forest animals and critters they still belong here and sometimes hibernation during the wintertime. this is there stories and it’s there home cause critter country is fine just the way it is , no ifs ands or buts ! #savecrittercountry #savesplashmountain
What fans really need is to rethemed pirate and the carribean ride into a brand new the princess and the frog ride plus rethemed restrant bayou blue into tiana’s place only at new olreans sqaure at disneyland park at disneyland resort california that’s is truly what princess Tiana was thinking about this whole time cause she’s born in new olreans Louisiana her hometown where’s her story begins besides she’s wouldn’t like it here at critter country anyway!
Any word on when they will do this? I was hoping to take my family on the original.
I went on the original ride in Disney World. I’ve haven’t went to the California one, but I hope to soon. Still pretty sad that this ride is closing for good. 🙁 But I can see why.
I will be soooo re-energized to experience this new ride. My sons and I fell in love with Splash Mtn on our first trip when they were little. I have a lot of sweet memories. Souped to make totally new ones.
Will be missed 🙁
I understand why but I’m sad it’s going
Another reason I won’t miss not going to Disney World.
Yay! It’s about time 🙂
You cannot erase history. Only learn from it. Why are we hiding it away??
Well Said.
I’ve also always thought it’d be cute to re-theme Space Mountain and have Stitch hanging out somewhere in there. Kind of like the Incredicoaster! 🙂
Wow! Splash Mountain will be missed.
I am glad that I got to go on this ride many times in its original state.
Me too. I love Brer Rabbit and his tricks. I thought The Princess and the Frog was a boring movie. Did not love it.
Using “Friends on the Other Side” as the lead in to the big drop would be pretty epic.
“Are you reeaaaaaady???”
I don’t believe it is a good idea to change the classic Splash Mountain. It has always been such an enjoyable ride.
Well apparently the rethemed ride’s story takes place AFTER the movie, so nothing related to Dr. Facilier can be there for obvious reasons.
Sad but no surprise that Disney caves in again!
