Flower Power Concert: Ricky Nelson Remembered Featuring The Nelsons

I went into Epcot’s Flower and Garden Festival; and, that means a Flower Power concert at the American Garden Theater in front of the American Adventure.

Performing tonight was The Nelsons. I saw The Nelsons perform at Epcot for the first time last year. I think that Matthew and Gunner do a fantastic job with their father’s songs. Their voices are close to their fathers and they are true to the way he sang the songs. Both are talented musicians in their own right and have had hits of their own. Most notably “After The Rain” and “(Can’t Live Without Your) Love and Affection”. However, they are performing as part of the Flower Power concert series to sing their Dad’s songs. They did change up some songs in each of the sets; but made sure they sang Ricky’s most populars songs in each set. Also, in the first set they did sing one of their own songs (After The Rain) but all others were their fathers songs.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with The Nelsons, they are the twin sons of 50’s and 60’s teen idol Ricky Nelson; who was killed in a plane crash 25 years ago. Matthew and Gunner Nelson, along with the Stone Canyon Band, pay tribute to their father by performing “Ricky Nelson Remembered Featuring The Nelsons” concerts around the country. At these concerts they sing many of their father’s hit songs. For those of us old enough to remember, we watched Ricky grow up on the Ozzie and Harriet Show and listened to him sing at the end of each show. Ricky Nelson had 19 top ten songs and over 50 songs that reached the top 100. He sang both ballads and rockabilly style music. Anyway, some of Ricky’s many hit songs are: Garden Party, Lonesome Town, Travelin Man, Hello Mary Lou, and Poor Little Fool,

Tip: for those of you who don’t recognize songs by their title (like me) you can go to either YouTube.com and find a video or a website like Amazon.com and look up the greatest hits album. Amazon will allow you to play a few seconds of each song; just enough to help you recognize (or not) the song.

As I mentioned before, Matthew and Gunner sound very much like their Dad. If you were to close your eyes you’d think it was Ricky on stage singing for you. The Stone Canyon band was exceptional as well. The lead guitarist, keyboard player and drummer were excellent. Combine the the great voices, fantastic band and Ricky’s songs and you have one very special and enjoyable evening.

Here’s a few pictures from tonight’s performance for you to enjoy.
