Tips for Disney Parks & Cruise Lines

This tip is a culmination of several great tips I have read on this site that worked out so perfectly for us last week at Disney. Before we left I bought each of my three kids a fanny pack. In it they carried a small plastic photo album filled with 4x6 index cards and a large Sharpie marker for autographs. The photo album ($1 each at Walmart) was a great alternative, as it allows you to put the photo in alongside of the autograph; a small zipper-top sandwich baggie filled with the appropriate ratio of coins to do pressed pennies (they cost 51 cents each); their Passports from Epcot; and a Visa gift card with dollars loaded on it for their own souvenirs -- that way if it got lost all we had to do would be to call and stop the card. They wore the packs every single day and barely complained once. This was a HUGE load off of my shoulders as usually I would be carrying all of these things around. I didn't even have to worry about them setting them down and losing them since they were snugly attached to their bodies at all times. I stumbled upon a new laundry item last week and immediately thought of Disney. Purex now sells an "all in one" laundry sheet. The sheet has detergent and softener embedded in it, so that it releases in the washer, then you toss the clothes into the dryer WITH the sheet, which has an anti-static strip that is heat-activated. I could definitely see putting a few of them into a zipper-top bag and taking them along for doing laundry at the resorts. I have tried them at home and they work really well. I don't think the dryer sheet is as effective as others, but its definitely worth the convenience and not having to lug all those products along, or to have to pay premium prices for them at the resort. - Melanie Weekes

At buffets where beverages are included, you can order two drinks to start with (or change what you're drinking instead of getting a refill). I'm mainly an iced tea drinker, but I like to treat myself with a glass of rich and creamy calorie-filled chocolate milk. I always start with a request for both beverages, and then just have the iced tea subsequently refilled. - Jennifer Bogdanski

Just a comment on the sale of shuttle launch tickets. Any follower of the shuttle program knows that tickets can sell out quickly. NOT TO FRET! If you don't have a ticket to get onto the Cape Canaveral grounds, you can stop anywhere along the river at any parking area, or park and see the launch. You will see the shuttle as soon as it crosses your horizon and you will hear it. It is an amazing sight! You might even be better off not getting a ticket, because there is always a chance the launch will not happen for some reason. Go to a park, bring a blanket, some coffee (early morning launch) and enjoy the time. Go early and you will meet some interesting people along the way! - Geri Preisser

My tip is to take a deep breath, relax, and let the magic come to YOU. So many people go to Disney World frantically searching for it and hunting it down, meanwhile they're missing it! It's passing them right by. The most magical moments happen when you least expect them. Experiencing the magic that happens shouldn't be stressful. It shouldn't be work or effort. People who have never been, hear so much about other people's experiences and memories. My tip for them is don't go looking for those particular things that you've heard about. So much can happen there -- let your OWN memories happen. Forget about what other people experience. You'll have your own stories to tell when you get back. And for people who have been a million times, they might go back trying to recapture the fond memories they've had from past trips. So my tip to them is keep those experiences as fond memories and every time you go back, create NEW memories. Just let the magic happen. Don't force it and don't rush it, because believe me, it WILL happen. - Twincess

For anyone dining at the Tusker House for Donald's Safari Breakfast, please be aware that the buffet is not your typical 'stand in line' type of buffet. While we were at the AK last week eating, cast members at the Tusker House kept announcing that we did NOT have to just stand in line waiting to get to the food we wanted. Rather, the buffet was a free flowing buffet -- you could just jump in line where you wanted and grab a plate. Unfortunately, not many people were listening and some guests got very angry when I stepped in line to get some scrambled eggs for my daughters... So, the moral of this story is, please listen to the cast members at the Tusker House breakfast buffet! And be kind to other guests. - Traci Curth

Here's a tip for families from the U.K. In the U.S., lemonade is not a fizzy drink, it's a still drink. It's like old-fashioned, homemade cloudy lemonade. It's excellent if you don't want to fill your kids up with cola, especially, if they can't manage to eat all their dinner as they're so full of pop! Also you'll find variants like pomegranate lemonade in Disney. - Louise Herrick

I had been trying to get an ADR at 'Ohana for three weeks prior to our visit. I even checked daily during our actual week of vacation with no luck. Then it occurred to me that guests need to cancel the ADR by midnight prior to the day of the ADR or they are charged a fee per guest. The next morning I checked for an ADR at 7 a.m. and found an available table for the same evening at 6:35 p.m., which had the extra bonus of ending our evening watching Wishes from our dining table. - Ellen Bemis

We just returned from a short trip to Walt Disney World. We had purchased the dining plan and on the last day, each person had two counter-service meals remaining. We found out that last morning that each adult counter service can be "exchanged" for four snacks. Wish we had known this earlier because we ran out of snacks and ended up paying for numerous bottles of water on the last full day. - Nancy

I could not afford 20 brand new pins for my daughter this past trip. I went on eBay and purchased actual Disney pins sold in a lot of 20 for $8. We put them on her lanyard and she got to exchange all 20 of them for her choice with the cast members at Disney. We also used her pins as Christmas tree decorations (attached by a paper clip) to our 3-foot tree this past Christmas at Saratoga Springs, and we didn't have to pack any extra decorations, she already had her pins with her. - Teresa Reeves

I just finished reading my newsletter, and was especially interested in the letters from families with infants concerning diapers. It reminded me of a lesson that I learned the hard way a few years ago. We were traveling to WDW with our two children, the youngest of whom was 6 months old at the time. In order to save space in our luggage, I decided to only carry with me enough diapers and formula to get us through the day. Whenever we arrive in Orlando, our first stop is always at a local grocery store, where we stock up on bottled water, fruit, snacks, etc. I figured that I would just pick up a large bag of diapers and more formula when I was doing my shopping. I wasn't concerned about finding our particular brand of formula, because it is a very commonly used formula. I didn't have any trouble getting the diapers, but I couldn't find the formula anywhere. I asked a manager for help, and she had never even heard of the brand that was so common at home. I had to read the labels, and pick out another formula that appeared to be similar to what the baby was used to. Luckily, our daughter adjusted well to the new formula, and we all had a great trip. If she had not adjusted well, it could have ruined our trip. Tip for parents: Never assume that the baby items you need will be readily available at WDW or in the Orlando area. This may especially be important if your child must use a specific formula, or needs a certain type of diapers. If your child has sensitive skin, or allergies, you may also want to pack a specific sunscreen, soap or detergent. It's much safer to bring these items from home, or mail them ahead of you to your hotel. - Shannon Barrett

We were able to rent a car through National for a really low rate that was less than four shuttle tickets. It was quick with online reservations and automatic check-in. The best part was I rented it for one day and you can return it at the hotel desk. We saved money, it was a fun drive, and probably quicker than waiting for a service. As a bonus you can stop for supplies on the way. - J. Perry
