Tips about Characters

Another idea for character autographs... We found a calendar at a popular store for less than $5 that had pictures of the Disney princesses. Each month featured a different princess. So, while doing the character lunch in Epcot, we had each princess autograph the month with her picture. When you get home, your child can enjoy the autographs each month! We also found a Winnie the Pooh calendar and did the same thing at the Crystal Palace breakfast. After the calendar is used up, you still have a beautiful picture with the autograph that can be used in a photo album or scrapbook! Hope this tip helps! - Carla Starr

Don't take a normal-sized ink pen for the characters to use while signing the kiddos' autograph book. Remember, most of them have thick padded gloves on which makes it hard to hold a small/thin pen. We just purchased (June '07) a HUGE pen from our local office supply store. It is the size of a very large cigar -- I think you could hold it if you were wearing a catcher's mitt! It's a novelty pen of course but it is exactly what Mickey and Minnie need to be able to hold and write. Cost? Less than $3. - John Brock

When my family and I went to Disney World last November we knew we wanted to do something with the character autographs that we could use. Before we left for our trip, my mom cut fabric squares and ironed on fabric paper to make the fabric stiffer. I bought a small clipboard and fabric markers. I also bought grippers to put on the markers because the characters need a fat marker to hold on to. We had each character sign a fabric square. When we got home, my mom made two twin size quilts for my two boys. This is something they will enjoy for many years. - Pollyanna

For character breakfasts, I would recommend letting girls wear their princess dresses to the princess meals because it helps with the magical aspect of it. However, on extremely hot Florida days, try putting it on over their clothes a few minutes before your reservation or once you are seated. It will only take a moment and it will save the headache of your child whining about being hot. I put my daughter's dress on her after we sat down because I watched a slew of little girls crying outside while waiting in their hot and heavy dresses. - Mendy776

Tip for first timers at a Character Meal -- understand that the characters have a predetermined rotating path around the restaurant. It would be helpful if you assure your kids that their turn is coming soon. There was one family [at our character meal] who felt they were being skipped over and continually sent their kids to interrupt the characters at our table! If your meal is complete and you have not visited with a certain character, just let your server know. They typically do all they can to remedy the situation ASAP. - Jennifer Shepard

When I was planning our family trip to Disney World, I came across the tip of getting a poster to have the characters sign. I loved the idea, but it was almost impossible to find a poster with just the castle or characters on it, even in Disney World. Luckily, on our second day in Epcot, we went on the Imagination with Figment ride. After you leave the ride and enter the gift shop area you can have them take a family picture and put it on a poster that you choose. It costs about $25 or so, the same as any other poster. They laminate it, but I found that Sharpie markers work fine. (The fine tip ones dry immediately; the thicker ones take a few seconds more.) The characters loved the poster idea and we have something we can hang up and see all the time. - Adriane Landry

Epcot - Just returned from our annual Thanksgiving trip to WDW. At Epcot there is now the Character Connection (by Innoventions and Club Cool). This is replacing the Double Decker bus that used to travel through Epcot with multiple characters. At the Character Connection we found Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, Donald and Chip & Dale. This is all inside and kids can get to see all of them and get autographs, too. While I loved the bus, the Cast Member said that they had a lot of complaints that the bus took off too quickly and kids did not get enough time to see their favorite characters, and also it is very hot outside in summer and the bus would not come out in the rain. This area was not very busy; my kids waited about two minutes to frolic with the characters. My tip would be go get a FastPass for Soarin' and go to the Character Connection! - Amy G.

Our kids collected pages of character autographs throughout the trip. On one of the last days of our trip we left the autograph books in a mesh bag on the back of our umbrella stroller while we rode Journey Into Imagination. When we came out of the ride it had started to rain. When we opened the autograph books almost all the autographs we had collected had washed away. Later that night I had to try and trace over any remainders of autographs so we'd at least have something to take home. So in conclusion, my tip is: don't get autographs with washable markers! And if you do, don't leave them in a place where they could get wet. Those rain showers come and go so fast! - Laura Sullivan

Try to go to a character breakfast in one of the parks for the first 8 a.m. seating before the park opens. You get to enter the park around 7:45 a.m., get your stroller/wheelchairs, eat a great breakfast and be in the back of the park riding the rides at opening time while everybody else is waiting in lines and just starting to come into the park. For a great photo opportunity, eat at the Crystal Palace and on your way there take a picture of your family in front of the castle -- since the park isn't open yet, your family will be the only ones in the picture. It's the only time you can ever do that! - Elizabeth Donoho

We just got back from a week at WDW. In years past we had to dig through the fanny pack for the pen so my daughter could get her autographs. What a pain! But this year I got smart; I attached Velcro to the pen and the book so they were together in the fanny pack. It was tons easier to get the book and pen out. - Dee Barnefiher

When my wife and I took our nieces (ages 7 and 9) to Disney World two years ago, they especially wanted to meet Cinderella. I had already made reservations for the Cinderella breakfast in the castle, but I didn't tell the girls right away. Instead, I said only that if we were very lucky maybe Cinderella would invite us to meet her in her castle. In the meantime, my wife, Kathy, purchased some invitation cards at one of the shops, with Cinderella and the castle on the cover. She filled out the invitation from "Princess Cinderella," and, the day before the breakfast, secretly left them on the girls' pillows as we left the room for the day. When we returned, the girls found the invitations and were thrilled that Cinderella had personally invited them to breakfast! Also, don't give up if you can't get reservations for breakfast in the castle or for other popular character meals. If the meal is all booked up, try calling again for reservations just a day or two before the meal (or even the day of). Often there are cancellations. It worked for me! - Dennis Driggers

It goes without saying that kids will get more out of your Disney trip if they are familiar with the Disney characters and movies. Our 2 1/2-year-old daughter, Jaelyn, watches Disney videos and DVDs all year round, but right before a trip, we let her watch even more than usual. She knows the names of every character we see at WDW, and has no fear of them. We don't have the Disney Channel anymore, but we borrow Rolie Polie Olie, Bear in the Big Blue House, and many more DVDs from our local library. They can pull up a list of all the Bear videos in the system and order them from other libraries. Introduce your children to Disney characters before your WDW vacation and they will feel like they are meeting old friends when they see them in the parks. - Alea Laughery

A Cast Member wrote in to remind us about some dos and don'ts concerning character autographs: "Please do not bring crayons, golf pencils or small tiny pens for the characters to sign with. Remember most characters have very large hands (or paws) and cannot hold these small items very well. Characters LOVE thick Sharpie pens and now they have retractable ones. These are great." I just read over the section on postcards and remembered a crazy idea I had with them. On one trip to Disney World, a friend asked me to get Mickey's autograph. Not wanting to come back with a piece of paper, I bought several different postcards of Mickey. I waited in line to meet the Mouse and when I got to him, I asked if he would give me his autograph on the postcard. He took the postcard, looked at it for a brief second, and then gave me a thumbs up and signed the postcard. It's a great way to add a little magic to the postcard. I would suggest mailing autographed postcards to kids and family members as well. - Skip Broome
