Magic Kingdom Sunburn Do’s and Don’ts

If you’ve ever walked into Magic Kingdom at 9 AM feeling like a hydrated, glowing Disney adult and walked out at 3 PM looking like a lobster who made several poor life choices… hi, you’re not alone.

Florida sun does not play. And the wide-open walkways, parade routes, and that very shadeless hub in front of Cinderella Castle? Well, they’re basically UV magnifiers. So let’s talk about what to do (and what absolutely not to do) when it comes to sunburn at Magic Kingdom.

DON’T Assume You’re Stronger Than the Sun

I don’t care if you “don’t usually burn.” I don’t care if it’s “cloudy.” You are not tougher than Central Florida UV levels in July. Or March. Honestly, most of the year in Florida. Apply sunscreen. And then reapply it. Yes, even if you did it once in the hotel room. Yes, even if you “think you’re fine.”

One of our team’s go-to park picks is the Shiseido Clear Sunscreen Stick SPF 50+.

This little stick is clutch because you can swipe it on without getting sunscreen all over your hands. It’s clear, it doesn’t leave a white cast, and it actually holds up when it gets hot (which, spoiler, it will). It’s perfect for face touch-ups while you’re walking through Liberty Square pretending you’re not melting.

DO Let Your Sunscreen Set Before Makeup

If you’re doing a full park glam moment, timing matters. Slathering sunscreen on and immediately layering foundation over it? That’s how you get pilling, sliding, and regret. Give it at least 15 minutes to sink in before adding makeup.

We’re big fans of Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40 for face days.

Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen

It’s invisible, feels like a primer, and doesn’t make you look like you dipped your head in olive oil. It also grips makeup really well, so you’re not fighting your base all day.

And when your forehead starts shining brighter than Tomorrowland at night? Toss Supergoop! (Re)setting Powder SPF 35 in your park bag.

It mattifies and adds extra sun protection at the same time. The twist-lock brush makes it super easy to swipe on while you’re waiting for a DOLE Whip. It’s also great for your scalp!

DON’T Ignore Reapplication (Seriously)

If you’re someone who forgets to reapply, we’ve got a hack. UV Detection Stickers are kind of genius.

You stick them on clean skin, and they turn purple in UV light. Once you apply sunscreen properly, they fade. When they turn purple again? That’s your cue. Reapply. They’re waterproof, so yes, they’ll survive sweat and splash zones. And they come in fun patterns, which makes them slightly less “I am monitoring my own negligence” and more “I am a responsible theme park icon.”

DO Hydrate Like It’s Your Full-Time Job

Sunburn and dehydration are besties. Don’t let them link up on your watch. The Owala Disney Princess FreeSip Insulated Stainless Steel Water Bottle keeps drinks cold for up to 24 hours.

It fits in cup holders, has a locking lid, and gives you the option to sip through a straw or chug from the wide opening. Listen, cold water in the afternoon at Magic Kingdom feels like winning the lottery.

DON’T Camp in Direct Sun for No Reason

Your parade strategy matters more than people realize. One side of the street is usually in shade. The other? Not so much. For example, in Frontierland, the Pecos Bill side tends to get better shade than the Frontier Trading Post side.

Outdoor seating

On Main Street, U.S.A., you’ll usually have better luck near the Emporium side. The hub in front of Cinderella Castle? Basically zero shade. You’ll definitely want to proceed with caution.

And for Mickey’s Magical Friendship Faire, you don’t need to claim a spot an hour early. You can typically walk up close to showtime. Since the entire viewing area is in the sun, the less time you’re standing there baking, the better.

DO Bring Backup Shade

Sometimes you just need to make your own shadow. The BAODINI Travel Essentials Mini Umbrella blocks UV rays with a UPF 50+ rating and folds down to basically palm-size.

It’s lightweight, fits in your park bag, and can absolutely save you during those long, exposed walkways between lands. It’s not dramatic. It’s strategic.

DON’T “Power Through” a Bad Burn

If you’re feeling dizzy, nauseous, overly fatigued, or your skin is painfully red and hot, don’t just tough it out. Magic Kingdom has First Aid on-site for a reason. Cast Members can help, and it’s air-conditioned. There is zero prize for pretending you’re fine while your body is clearly not fine.

Also, most of the ride queues are covered or indoors, so you’ll usually get breaks from direct sunlight while waiting. But the walking, the parades, and the castle photos? Yeah, that’s where people get roasted.

Magic Kingdom

Magic Kingdom is magical. Looking like a tomato by dinner at Cinderella’s Royal Table, not so much. Plan ahead, pack smart, and respect the Florida sun because it absolutely does not respect you back.
