Florida sun does not play. And the wide-open walkways, parade routes, and that very shadeless hub in front of Cinderella Castle? Well, they’re basically UV magnifiers. So let’s talk about what to do (and what absolutely not to do) when it comes to sunburn at Magic Kingdom.

DON’T Assume You’re Stronger Than the Sun

I don’t care if you “don’t usually burn.” I don’t care if it’s “cloudy.” You are not tougher than Central Florida UV levels in July. Or March. Honestly, most of the year in Florida. Apply sunscreen. And then reapply it. Yes, even if you did it once in the hotel room. Yes, even if you “think you’re fine.”

DON’T Camp in Direct Sun for No Reason

Your parade strategy matters more than people realize. One side of the street is usually in shade. The other? Not so much. For example, in Frontierland, the Pecos Bill side tends to get better shade than the Frontier Trading Post side.

On Main Street, U.S.A., you’ll usually have better luck near the Emporium side. The hub in front of Cinderella Castle? Basically zero shade. You’ll definitely want to proceed with caution.

And for Mickey’s Magical Friendship Faire, you don’t need to claim a spot an hour early. You can typically walk up close to showtime. Since the entire viewing area is in the sun, the less time you’re standing there baking, the better.

DO Bring Backup Shade

If you’re feeling dizzy, nauseous, overly fatigued, or your skin is painfully red and hot, don’t just tough it out. Magic Kingdom has First Aid on-site for a reason. Cast Members can help, and it’s air-conditioned. There is zero prize for pretending you’re fine while your body is clearly not fine.

Also, most of the ride queues are covered or indoors, so you’ll usually get breaks from direct sunlight while waiting. But the walking, the parades, and the castle photos? Yeah, that’s where people get roasted.

Magic Kingdom is magical. Looking like a tomato by dinner at Cinderella’s Royal Table, not so much. Plan ahead, pack smart, and respect the Florida sun because it absolutely does not respect you back.
