NEW LOOK at the Changes Coming to Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin in Disney World

Disney just gave us a FIRST LOOK at the changes coming to Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin this year!

There is so much change happening at Magic Kingdom right now, and among the changes is the major update on Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin. Disney recently filed a new permit, and now it looks like we’re getting even closer to the brand-new version of the ride. Why do we say that? Well, Disney Imagineering just gave us a first look!

Disney Imagineering took to Instagram to show us what will be coming to the popular Tomorrowland attraction at Magic Kingdom. The video starts off with Disney Imagineer Shay, explaining that they have been running tests inside the hyperspace room for a year and a half. They are focused on having the “best possible media for opening day.”

The hyperspace room is the room on the ride where you’re surrounded by a black screen that makes you feel like you’re moving forward quickly. Disney Imagineering is installing brand-new media for the hyperspace scene.

For the first time, Buzz Lightyear is being introduced here. Zurg is out there in hyperspace releasing a bunch of space mines, which is an opportunity for space rangers to score more points by firing on them.

The Creative Director Disney Imagineer for the project, Tasha Sounart, used to be an animator at Pixar. One of the first films she animated was Toy Story 2. So you know were in for a treat with the updates coming to the ride. The teams had to create a grid to animate on as a flat surface, due to the difficulty of animating on a tunnel. They then projected that grid onto the tunnel surface.

With all the hard work and dedication that Disney Imagineering has put into the updates of this ride, we know we’re in for a treat. Pixar animators working so closely on the project adds love and care to the animation and the characters, leading to an amazing and authentic experience.

That’s not all the exciting news that we got regarding Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin. Thanks to WDWMagic, we got a look at a Good Morning America segment that announced the ride will also feature a brand-new scene with the green aliens opening up an airlock to send us into space to start our battle with the evil emperor Zurg!

Moving away from Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin, Good Morning America also discussed some of the updates coming to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad! The ride will reopen this spring with new trains, audio animatronics refreshed, and new effects. This will include things like the rainbow caverns, which will come to life, and keep an eye out for some gold out on the mountain.
