Tips for Disney Parks & Cruise Lines

My wife, as is the case with many large folk, has knee problems. Therefore, we usually rent a wheelchair when we visit. After paying for the rental, ask one of the cast members at the pick-up point for a wider chair. They usually have them in the back and are happy to fetch one for you. - Kirk Hine

Advice for avoiding late and delayed flights:

1) Try to book early in the day. You are less likely to run into delays in the morning.
2) Try to take a direct flight. Connecting flights offer more opportunities for delays and missed flights.
3) Check in early. This decreases your chances of getting "bumped".
4) Do not fly on the hour or half hour. If you have a choice between a 9:30 flight and a 9:23 flight, take the 9:23 (this has to do with too many airlines scheduling flights on the hour and half hour). Pam Forrester

My favorite autograph book idea is to buy one of those small-sized, single photo per page photo albums (available in Disney designs at various locations throughout Walt Disney World). Buy some large-sized index cards. Have each character sign the unlined side of one index card. Be sure to take the child's photo with the character. Each evening, have your child write what he/or she liked best about meeting the character or even what they did that day at the park or ate at the restaurants. When you get home from your trip, you might even consider letting your child decorate borders around the character signatures or add stickers. Now assemble the photo album by inserting the index card on one side of a page and the photo with the character on the other. Binnie Betten

ALL RESORTS - Some of the resorts have life vests (child size) that you can use for free at the resort pools during your entire stay. One year we stayed at Beach Club (prior to my daughter learning how to swim), and were told she couldn't go down the slide with the vest on. So she worked really hard and learned how to swim that summer. I just wanted to let you know that there may be some things your child won't be able to do if they are unable to swim "unassisted." Whenever we visit the World, I always try to wear shirts that have something local from home, like a favorite sports team. Cast members and other guests from the same part of the country get pretty excited to see others from "home." We have had some great conversations and little "extras" from cast members that have resulted from just wearing one of my favorite T-shirts from home. - Paul B.

Each day at 2, 2:30, 3, and 3:30 p.m., Disney Vacation Club members can stop at the DVC kiosk in the Grand Ceremonial House of the Polynesian Village Resort for a tour of a DVC studio and bungalow. Be sure to have your DVC membership card with you. - Ron

Your vacation will seem less expensive when you pay for your room a little bit at a time. I start making monthly payments as soon as we make our reservation. The room will be paid in full (or at least mostly paid) by the time we arrive. We set up our savings account to automatically deduct a portion of each paycheck every payday into our vacation account. This forces us to save. We also go to WDW after we anticipate getting our tax return back. That is also part of our "forced" savings plan. You can have your room paid in advance, as well as park tickets and travelers' checks for food and purchases. Michelle

We like to order snacks from www.netgrocer.com and have them delivered. It's cheaper than buying them there, and as we are not big breakfast eaters, a cereal bar works for us and saves us money. - Jess

This useful website will give you gas pricing, hotel information, etc., for all exits along I-95 (which runs from Maine to Florida). This site is great for planning gas budgets, and finding where the lower priced hotels are along the way: Go to www.usastar.com - Click on "The I - 95Exit InformationGuide." -Amy

I put Velcro on the bottom of the antenna toppers, so I can attach them to places in my cubicle at work. I can now decorate for every season. My fellow workers think it is a great idea. It helps them remember their Disney trips. - Jack

When packing for vacation, my husband, son and I use two large suitcases (plus our carry-ons). For the two large suitcases, we split all of our clothes in half. Half of everything goes in each suitcase. Most times, when the airlines lose luggage, they don't lose every piece belonging to one family. You should have half of your clothes when you arrive if you do lose one piece of luggage. I would much rather end up having to do laundry than spending my extra cash on all new clothes. - Lynn

I found on a Disney Cruise Line fan website "secret porthole rooms", which are sold as inside staterooms because the views are "obstructed", but are in fact porthole staterooms! These six rooms on Deck 5 are sold as Category 10 inside staterooms and can be specifically requested, but book them as far in advance as possible because they sell quickly. They are #5520, #5522, # 5524, #5020, #5022, #5024 (5522/5524 and 5022/5024 are connecting).

EDITOR'S NOTE: this applies to Disney Magic and Wonder but not Disney Dream.

If you have young children and are going to a late parade or fireworks, bring a pair of pajamas with you. Or, if you are going back to your hotel beforehand, you can change there. Have the kids put on their pajamas before the parade. Most kids (mine anyway) fall asleep before we return to the hotel. This way, you can just put the kids into bed and not have to worry about waking them up to change into sleepwear. It has saved me from many nights of "I've had my 'nap', now I want to play!" -Michele
