The Massive Magic Kingdom Change You’ve Been Waiting For Finally Starts TOMORROW!

Disney fans, we have been waiting and waiting, but the day is almost here!

After an over-year-long closure, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad reopens tomorrow with new changes, and we cannot wait to climb aboard the Wildest Ride in the Wilderness!

On January 6th, 2025, Big Thunder closed for an extensive refurbishment, but it will finally reopen tomorrow, May 3rd.

While under refurbishment, it received a brand new track and updated effects. This attraction is over 40 years old after all, so it was time for some love and updates.

In addition to the maintenance, we are also getting a brand new scene, Rainbow Caverns. The concept art for this scene looks really neat, so we’re excited to ride it for ourselves.

We are also getting a new updated backstory. Disney explains this change in backstory as, “The story of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad dates back to Olden Times, or rather, Golden Times, during the early days of America’s first major gold rush. When Barnabas T. Bullion struck gold in the Big Thunder region, he saw a future full of riches and hustled to start the Big Thunder Mountain Company.”

Okay, so what does this mean for you if you’re visiting Magic Kingdom tomorrow? If riding the new and improved Big Thunder is on your list, be prepared for crowds and long lines.

This closure has been longer than average for Disney, and it’s such a fan favorite ride, so crowds are gonna be high as people clamor to get back on it and see the changes for themselves.

If you’re planning to ride tomorrow, we would suggest grabbing a Lightning Lane multi-pass for this ride. Or if you don’t have Lightning Lane, try to rope drop and get there as early as possible. Or you could try to ride it at night, which is honestly one of our favorite times to ride, especially if you can ride during the fireworks!

Either way, we are SO excited to ride this attraction, even if we have to wait in a long line. We can’t wait for this fan-favorite to be open again!
